Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) May 28, 2004:
GRound floor and first floor is the same in the US. But go ahead and use ground floor to please the client because they never know enough English to know
Non-ProZ.com May 28, 2004:

floor tile / paving stone

or slab! Unless you've actually seen this property and know exactly whether this is tiles or paving stones or anything else (!) I always tend to stick to something safe like flooring which would cover all of these. Or you could ask the client if they've seen what the flooring is...

disagree Tom Bishop : "Slab" is the standard industry terminology and refers to the entire (concrete) floor slab (not individual paving-type slabs).

ground-floor floor

talking about the weight that the floor itself can bear,ie a giant slab of concrete

This is a property lease not a construction industry document.

I bet that all the floors are concrete slabs yet they also use the word \"plancher\" which undoutedly has its origins in wooden flooring, though \"plancher\" now generally means the floor between two floors... so if we translate \"plancher\" as floor shouldn\'t we do the same for \"dalle\"?
Peer comment(s):

agree nothing : It's the floor itself, not the paving

agree Robert Frankling : Such a solid, unfinished surface is often called "the slab" in construction.

beautifully said, my Canadian pal
disagree Tom Bishop : As Robert says, the "dalle" is the floor slab.

ground slab

slab-on-grade in US.

<<A concrete slab supported by the ground, unlike a suspended slab. It can be on fill ....>>

I'm assuming the capacity of your "dalle de RdC" is higher than the others, which would tend to imply it IS a ground slab, which is also what the French tends to mean, "sauf précision".

NB <<ground floor. The floor which is nearest ground level. A concrete ground floor can be a ground slab or suspended ...>>
