account them

Non-PRO anglais vers français Autre Entreprise / commerce Similitudes between public and private surveillance
Bonjour à toutes et à tous,

Il est question d'une vidéo traitant des similitudes entre surveillance publique et surveillance privée.

Les données sont toujours au centre du débat. Est-il question de surveiller les entreprises en plus de les contrôler ?

"If we're ever going to get corporations to stop spying on us, for governments to hold them to ***account*** and audit them, and make sure they're doing what they say they're doing, and not sneakily spying on us even though they claim they're not then we're going to have to end both the state and private practice of surveillance."

Merci beaucoup.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Jean-Claude Gouin Jul 22, 2015:
@ writeaway ... Regarding your first comment ... my first impression! If you can't parse correctly, you have no business in translation.
Françoise Vogel Jul 22, 2015:
pro/non-pro la question est mal posée mais de là à dire qu'il s'agit d'expression courante...
writeaway Jul 22, 2015:
Hi Patrick, no it's not the same Sandrine shows the difference.
patrickfor Jul 22, 2015:
je n'ai proposé aucune trad, j'ai donné un avis... J'entends ce que vous dites...
mais 'to hold them to account" n'est-ce pas pareil que dire 'to hold them accountable"?
Sandrine Pantel Jul 22, 2015:
tenir pour responsable serait "to hold accountable for"
writeaway Jul 22, 2015:
It means they have to justify themselves, provide explanations. Not quite the same as be held accountable/ liable/responsible for.
p
patrickfor Jul 22, 2015:
pour moi "hold them to account" c'est "tenir pour responsable" ce qui n'est pas loin de rendre des comptes mais rendre des comptes n'implique pas exactement d'être responsable.
writeaway Jul 22, 2015:
hold them to account! "to hold someone to account" is the actual expression. The way it's been split up/parsed makes it confusing and misleading.
