stimulation auriculaire

français vers anglais Médecine Médecine (général)
ECG of patient with a pacemaker:

"L’électrocardiogramme indique un rythme entraîné à l’étage ventriculaire à 80 bpm sur stimulation auriculaire."

From what I can gather, the pacemaker is set to ventricular pacing "entraîné à l’étage ventriculaire", so I'm confused as to why it says "sur stimulation auriculaire" which I take to mean as "atrial pacing". Does it simply mean "dual-chamber paced rhythm"?

Discussion

Lisa Rosengard Jan 23, 2023:
I think it's about atrial pacing since the auricular stimulation normally refers to stimulation of the ear. (The ECG indicates a rhythm straining to or leading to the ventricular stage (of the heart) at 80 bpm on auricular stimulation.)

Thanks Sue. Yes I've seen this article which was really handy for the other texts I was translating where they actually gave the pacemaker's settings. Unfortunately for this one they didn't which is why I'm stuck. I'm going to err on the side of caution and say "atrial paced ventricular rhythm at a rate of 80 bpm" as like you say, "sensed" has a specific meaning.
Sue Davis Jan 23, 2023:
Hi Emily, my apologies I hadn't come across this use of "sense" before. It does seem to have a specific meaning though, does "ventricular sensed" fit your case? This is a useful reference - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK556011/
Emily Gilby (asker) Jan 23, 2023:
I can find lots of hits for "ventricular paced atrial sensed" but not so much the other way around, although this is what I'm leaning towards. It seems clear that the pacemaker is set to "atrial pacing", and then the ventricular part, to me anyway, seems to say that the 80 bpm is recorded (or sensed) in the ventricles.
Emily Gilby (asker) Jan 23, 2023:
Could it be "atrial paced ventricular sensed rhythm"?
Sue Davis Jan 23, 2023:
I think the atrium is stimulated electrically and that current is transmitted to the ventricle via the normal routes causing contraction of the ventricle
Emily Gilby (asker) Jan 23, 2023:
If it is "atrial pacing", then what does it mean by "rythme entraîné à l’étage ventriculaire" in this context? I have "rythme électro-entraîné à l'étage ventriculaire" as "ventricular paced rhythm" in my TB

The stimulus creates the pacing.
Although I think you can write atrial pacing stimulus, which is correct as well.

It's not necessarily a dual-chamber pacemaker, it could be a single chamber pacemaker ; the report, I think, states that the bpm have been measured at the ventricular level, and the pacing has been created from atrial stimuli.

atrial pacing

Atrial pacing is done for either symptomatic sinus node dysfunction (SND) or for maintenance of atrio-ventricular synchrony in a dual chamber pacemaker.
