I just arrived in Vancouver and have set up as a home-based business for freelance translation from French, Spanish and Slovene into English, which I have been doing in the UK since 2007, following two years as an in-house translator for the European Union.

I've tried to adjust my Proz.com profile now I'm here, but it's a whole new world out here for me, as I'd never even been to Canada before moving here, so any top tips from experience Canadian translators would be very much welco

Thanks Johanna that's a great idea! I'll make sure to get down there. Is it worth getting business cards printed do you think?

That way you can meet colleagues, participate in activities, and possibly consider becoming certified. You could also consider joining the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce (http://www.bcchamber.org) for more or less the same reasons, including networking etc. Once you are certified, you could also contact immigration organizations, registry offices, etc., to let them know of your services. I hope this is a start for you.Collapse

Is it worth getting business cards printed do you think?

Definitely - either print them yourself or go to one of the small independent print shops downtown; Staples has some good deals as well.

See you around!
