But worst is to keep your eyes from the subtitles (and suggest improvements), even though you understand everything perfectly without them

I frequently read literature in my source languages outside work and my mind is instinctively drawn to what would be the translation challenges. Like Yetta, I find it hard to stop myself from trying to improve upon the subtitles when watching a film.

But not when I'm engrossed in the content of the material I'm reading.

I can "smell" a translation a mile away if it's poorly done, and then I will start to "fix" it.

And when I read a book translated from English into French, I can't help approaching it with a reviewing mindset. Last week, I came upon a book about the world of Harry Potter and noticed 3 translation mistakes in the first two pages. It completely ruined the thing and I stopped reading...

As subtitles seem to take quite a hit in this thread, I'd just like to note that subtitle translators have to take several factors into account (first and foremost adhering to a feasible reading speed), so the best subtitle often is not the same as what would otherwise be considered the best translation.
Please keep that in mind when you scream at the TV.

but more when hearing other people's conversations, rather than in written material. I would listen and quietly try to keep up with my tongue, simultaneously interpreting. But when I do it, it is on purpose for the sake of practicing, not a habit or something I find myself doing.

Yes - all the time, no matter where I am or what I'm doing. It drives me crazy, but I can't stop !

I sometimes do but mentally proofreading the English I read is a more common occurrence. My partner is a monolingual editor (amongst other things), so we amuse ourselves correcting the Guardian over breakfast.

Consciously, as a form of practice. I also pay attention to bilingual posters, instructions and other texts to make a note of how things are phrased in that field for both languages, so that I have the best chance of reproducing them when I work with similar materials.
