I quite often take my work with me Aug 21, 2009

I normally have my laptop with me on the holiday and usually check my e-mails regularly. If I am in the country I often end up working a lot, simply because I have a mobile broadband connection and it doesn´t cost me so much to work.

If I go on a holiday where I move around a lot from place to place and it is in a different country, such as recently when I was in Hawaii, I tend not to work. I find that when I have to pay for an additional internet connection (which I am very depen

If I go on a holiday where I move around a lot from place to place and it is in a different country, such as recently when I was in Hawaii, I tend not to work. I find that when I have to pay for an additional internet connection (which I am very dependent on, not just to accept and download jobs, but normally while I am working as well), apart from the two different suppliers I am already paying each month then I tend to reject all incoming jobs...

Holidays Third World countries... Aug 21, 2009

When I go on holidays, I usually use this time to volunteer in third World countries. In the places where I go (in very small and poor communities), because of lack of electricity (and lack of everything else too!), of cource the internet connection is quite poor or most of the time, simply non-existent... So, I just email all my clients, to let them know that I will return on a certain date, and hope for the best!

Take ... Aug 21, 2009

Not exactly take; however when I have an outstanding job, to be delivered shortly after my return, I make sure I can access it via my web-based e-mail (I am not one of those who carries a laptop everywhere they go), so that I can at least send what I have done if necessary.
It came in useful last year when all UK airports were closed due to heavy snow and my return was delayed for 2 days.

I actually used pen and paper for the first time in years - translating in my hotel room - and then checked a few items and finished it in an internet café.

Yes, always Aug 21, 2009

Yes, Ican't remmber a time when I didn't ...

I am a disorganised perfectionist workaholic and I imagine that is the worst possible combination of traits (at least for my nearest and dearest ...) I never get everything finished before we go (everything being admin, invoices, updating databases and glossaries, client files, stats, etc.

I also always check my emails morning and afternoon too and respond to anything urgent but am strict in confining this to specific times

I guess I am lucky that my family is so tolerant ...

Holidays are made to do things I usually cannot do: move around, take some (more) physical exercise, meet friends, soak up a different culture, brush up my knowledge of the language/culture... But then, some of these are part of the job, in a way.

Another way I spend the holidays is to host friends from other countries (expats or locals). But then I don't GO on a holiday, I have one without moving from my office/home... See more

Yes Aug 21, 2009

It is not that I usually "take" work with me on a holiday, I try to get everything cleaned up first, but I am ready for more work when it comes in. That means taking my laptop, or if there are plenty of cheap cyber cafés where I am going, just a flash drive. The idea is that I have to take care of my clients, and my holidays can last anywhere from a few days to six weeks.

I just tell clients that at times it might take a bit longer for me to come through because I'm on a trip, and

I just tell clients that at times it might take a bit longer for me to come through because I'm on a trip, and since I am normally very fast they do not complain.

For me, cutting off totally from work is one of the main reasons why I do take holidays. I wouldn't enjoy them otherwise.

Holidays are holidays! Aug 21, 2009

I totally agree with Philippe and Sophie. For me, holidays are a time to rest and do things I can't do during working times.

I only get work with me if it's part of a previous agreement and I couldn't finish it before going out.

Holiday <> Work Aug 21, 2009

I do love my work, but there's a time for work and a time for rest; holidays aren't for work. Unless you consider being with my mother a job... but I haven't been able to get her to pay me for it!

Sometimes - but I try not to Aug 21, 2009

Sometimes I decide I need a break, but I've got projects on the go or things are very busy at work (I work at an agency by day, and as a freelancer by night). In those cases I bring my laptop along so I can finish off what needs to be done. Otherwise I try not to bring my trusty laptop because this invariably leads to me working more than I wanted to. Absolutely never! Aug 21, 2009

If you take your work with you on holiday then you're not on holiday... For me it's that simple. I inform my clients beforehand that I am not available in a given period and they accept/respect it.

Client-Translator agreement Aug 21, 2009

My annual holidays are set by the time my main customer's own holidays take place. So, we agree on the dates we will not be working together before hand.

My annual holidays are set by the time my main customer's own holidays take place. So, we agree on the dates we will not be working together before hand.

I am very cautious to express in written very clearly that I will be sending my last translation on a given day, and that I will resume my activity on another given day, always in agreement with that customer's publication schedule. As for other projects on the go, we have always agreed upon the fact that some of these can wait. Both of us take considerable time in advance to avoid rushing.

In almost 10 years, I only had to work in-between holidays once from my hotel, because publication' schedules where altered too late when I had my tickets already issued and hotel booking set for my whole family.

With other clients, they know that if I'm in, I immediately reply either accepting or rejecting the assignment, so I do not need to keep checking my emails while on vacations. Besides, I usually send an email announcing that I will be off during a certain period of time.

I NEED holidays to be real holidays, so as extensively explained above, I take all precautions to let them be so. BUT, I acknowledge that I "workaholicly" tend to make use of some extra time when I am at a waiting room, at a bar waiting for a member of my family, or during waiting times of the sort.
