French term

en dehors d’une maternité ou d’un mariage

French to English Medical Medical: Health Care HIV screening
From a GP questionnaire about HIV screening:

"Nous allons aborder ensemble le dépistage du VIH, la pratique et l’expérience que vous en avez.

1. Avez-vous déjà demandé à un de vos patients de faire un test de dépistage ?
Questions de relance : En dehors d’une maternité ou d’un mariage ?"

I'm not sure how maternité and mariage fit together here. Can anyone help?

other than in the event of a pregnancy or a forthcoming wedding

in France, pregnant women and future brides/grooms are subject to screening

I should add that blood tests used to be compulsory for couples getting married (not sur if still the case today - things change) and that it is only logical to test expectant mothers, given the potential dangers for their babies

FYI - a couple of years ago we asked the bank for a bridging loan (for 5 weeks !) and they made us go through a full medical, including HIV screening...... draw your own conclusions !

agree Lori Cirefice : yes, expectant mothers in France are screened for HIV (among others - picture a pin cushion!) I think the blood tests prior to mariage are still compulsory here, but HIV is not http://www.mariage.fr/article/sengager/pieces.cfm

agree B D Finch : Does this mean the French health service makes an assumption of pre-marital celibacy?

agree Terry Richards : @BD - Yes, and then they test for things you can only get if you haven't been celibate!

agree DouglasCarnall : The point is "genuine diagnostic suspicion" vs "routine testing" NB: quite possible (though less common) to contract HIV non-sexually—blood products, needlesticks, maternal-foetal transmission

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : "Mariage" rather than "wedding". The former is the legal status you acquire, the latter is the ceremony.
