La littérature considérée comme plaie ouverte
Homme de lettres de vocation, Jean-Paul Sartre fut voué dès son enfance à ne voir dans la littérature qu’une activité secondaire. Et si on relisait la Nausée ?
« Si je reste un jour sans écrire, la cicatrice brûle. » A-t-on accordé assez d’attention à cette phrase des Mots ? Sartre, qu’on juge aujourd’hui le plus antilittéraire des écrivains du siècle passé, y avoue que le sens de sa vie s’est noué autour d’un désir d’écriture, de l’abandon à ce désir, puis de l’abandon de ce désir. « J’ai commencé ma vie comme je la finirai sans doute, au milieu des livres. » Les livres d’enfance de « Poulou » furent Cri-cri et Pardaillan. La cicatrice, c’est celle de ce qu’il appelle les « commandements cousus sous la peau » : écrire, ne pas écrire trop vite, trop bien : « Si j’écris trop aisément, elle brûle. » Après le triomphe des « avant-gardes » et la restauration qui leur a succédé, les oeuvres de Sartre, ses thèses sur la littérature, nous parviennent à travers deux miroirs déformants. Roman à thèse + écrivain engagé, telle est aujourd’hui l’équation sous laquelle on croit pouvoir chiffrer l’auteur de la Nausée. Il est vrai que lui-même ne protestait pas quand on (Simone de Beauvoir) laissait entendre que ce premier roman avait été écrit pour « exprimer sous forme littéraire des vérités et des sentiments métaphysiques », une conception de la littérature comme servante de l’idée qui n’est plus de notre temps, et qui fait de Sartre un vaincu de l’histoire littéraire. Au moment où le jeune professeur de philosophie met en chantier ce « roman métaphysique », qui s’intitule encore Melancholia, Céline vient de publier Voyage au bout de la nuit, la Condition humaine, de Malraux vient de paraître, Nathalie Sarraute travaille à Tropismes, et Artaud - ce n’est pas sans rapport on le verra - vient de prononcer les conférences qui deviendront le Théâtre et son double. Relecture faite, la Nausée apparaît comme un roman original, très éloigné du modèle traditionnel qui reste dominant, ouvrant une voie très personnelle que l’auteur délaissera pour revenir à un réalisme des plus classiques. Le cycle des Chemins de la liberté, restera inachevé en 1949 avec la Mort dans l’âme. C’est dans son théâtre que se réalise le mieux, à ses yeux comme à ceux de son époque, l’objectif de littérature engagée définie en 1947 dans Qu’est-ce que la littérature ? et mis à l’épreuve dans les études critiques de Situation. Une théorie sur laquelle flotte depuis longtemps un parfum de malentendu et qui ne représente qu’un moment de sa réflexion sur la littérature. Cependant, du Baudelaire de 1947 à l’Idiot de la famille de 1971-1972, l’essentiel de l’effort de Sartre peut se lire comme une volonté obstinée de ne pas être dupe. Mettre au jour tout ce qui dans la situation de l’écrivain, le public pour qui il écrit, manifeste la domination de la bourgeoisie jusque dans la langue « que cent cinquante ans de domination bourgeoise ont cassée, vulgarisée, assouplie, truffée de "bourgeoisismes" » reste son souci primordial. On le retrouve avec une certaine émotion dans l’essai autobiographique significativement intitulé les Mots, où l’on voit le lecteur passionné de Zévaco, le petit Pardaillan du Luxembourg refouler sa vocation littéraire au profit de l’enseignement (et plus tard de la philosophie), et démonter devant nous « le vieux bâtiment ruineux [de son] imposture ». « Pourtant, j’écris toujours, que faire d’autre ? » Derrière ce constat, se lit cette passion de lire, d’écrire, qui lui fait tout accepter, et d’abord ce manque de facilité qui fut sa croix et sa chance : « Mes livres sentent la sueur et la peine, j’admets qu’ils puent au nez de nos aristocrates ; je les ai faits contre moi, ce qui veut dire contre tous. » Il aurait aussi bien pu écrire « pour tous ».

A man of letters by vocation, Jean Paul Sartre (1)made up his mind, right from childhood, to consider literature only as a secondary activity. And if one was reading “Nausea” again? “If I stay a day without writing, I will be affected by it and it will be evident to all”. Have we paid adequate attention to these words?
Jean Paul Sartre, who we consider today, to be the most anti-literary of all writers of the last century, owned up to the fact that what brought meaning to his life was wrapped around a desire to write, to give himself to that desire…. “Undoubtedly, my life will end up how it started, amidst books”.
Children’s books (comics) in those days were “Cri cri” and “Pardaillan”. Sartre refers to the effect on his writing as “‘-orders sewn under the skin, indelible, unforgettable’”-: write, do not write too fast, too well. “If I write with ease, it will be apparent.” After overcoming these effects and the restoration that followed, Sartre’s works, his theses on literature reached us through two distorting mirrors: novels expounding philosophical or social theses and a writer who was committed. Today, such is the equation under which we believe that we can assess the author of “Nausea”.
It is true that he did not protest when someone (Simone de Beauvoir(2)) made us understand that his first novel had been written to express, in literary style, some metaphysical truths and sentiments. This is a notion of literature, which acts as a support of ideas, no longer applicable in our time and which made Sartre a victor of literary history. When the young philosophy teacher was working on this his metaphysical novel which he again titled “Melancholia”, Céline (3) had just published “Journey to the End of the Night”, Malraux’s (4) “Man’s Fate” had just appeared. Nathalie Sarraute (5) was working on “Tropisms” and Artaud (6) - one would see that there is a link - had just made some conferences public, which would later become the “Theatre and its Double”. Reading “Nausea” again, it seemed to be a highly original text, far removed from the usual prevailing pattern. This thus paved a very personal way, which the author would abandon but come back to, to the realization of the greatest classics.
The series of “Roads to Freedom” would remain unfinished with “Troubled Sleep”* in 1949. The objective of a well-defined and committed literature was achieved most in Sartre’s theatre. This was in 1947, before his very eyes and before the people of his time, with his “What is Literature?” This was further to be subjected to critical analyses in “Situation[s]” – a theory on which, for a long time hung a whiff of misunderstanding and which represented only, a moment of Sartre’s reflection on literature.
However, from “Baudelaire” in 1947, to “The Family Idiot” between 1971 and 1972, Sartre’s main effort could be seen as a dogged will, not to be fooled. His greatest concern was bringing everything, in his situation and that of the public for which he was writing, to light, that would show the domination of the bourgeoisie, right up to the language …[150 years of the bourgeoisie subjugation…].
We find him with a certain emotion in the autobiographic essay significantly titled “The Words”, where we see the reader who had a passion for Zévaco, the little Pardaillan from Luxembourg, suppress his literary vocation in favour of teaching (and later on in favour of philosophy). Therefore, “the old prestigious building had lost its value”. “However, I always write, what else is there to do?” Behind this admission reflects this passion to read, to write, which made him accept whatever situation he found himself in, more so because of this lack of facility, which became his cross and his luck.
“My books feel the sweat and the pain, which I admit the aristocrats find repugnant. I turned them against me, and by extension against everyone.” He would have been able to write ‘for all’.

« La famine de 1983 n’était pas aussi dure. À l’époque, le mil n’était pas si cher et j’avais de l’argent. » Assise sur une de ces hautes jarres en bois dans lesquelles se pilent les aliments, Zeïnou résume sa situation. Comme la trentaine de femmes qui l’entourent, elle a parcouru des kilomètres à pied pour tenter de grappiller un peu de nourriture à Tessaoua, une bourgade où les Izala, la tendance locale de l’islam radical, sont omniprésents. Installées près du local de l’Association des musulmans d’Afrique, une ONG financée par l’Arabie saoudite, les femmes forment un patchwork de tissus de couleurs vives attendant pour manger la générosité d’un passant. Dans la région de Maradi, pourtant grenier du Niger, rares sont les familles qui font plus d’un repas par jour. Composé de boules de mil, une céréale locale faible en apports caloriques, et agrémenté d’herbes ou de feuilles issues de la cueillette, ce repas quotidien est loin de suffire. « Ce matin, je n’ai rien mangé pour venir sur mon champ », explique un vieux paysan près du village de Gadi, au sud de Maradi. Sécheresse et criquets Le tissu de sa chemise est transparent à force d’être élimé et, debout dans son champ, une petite bêche à la main, il parle de son « plus grand problème » : « le manque de nourriture ». Les enfants en bas âge sont les plus affectés. Depuis le mois de janvier, plus de 12 000 enfants en état de malnutrition sévère ont été sauvés dans les centres de soins de Médecins sans frontières. Like the 30 or so women who were around her, she trekked for miles on foot, in an attempt to pick up a bit of food at Tessaoua, a village where the Izalas, some locals with a tendency towards radical Islam, were everywhere. Settled near a local Association of Muslims in Africa, an NGO financed by Saudi Arabia, the women form a patchwork of vivid coloured fabrics, waiting to benefit from passers by’s generosity.
In the Maradi region, despite the fact that that is the granary of Niger, you will rarely see families that eat more than one meal a day. Made up of balls of millet, a local cereal low in the required daily calories, usually acceptably eaten with herbs or leaves from the harvest, this daily meal is far from being sufficient. “This morning, I ate nothing before coming to my farm” explained an old peasant near the Gadi village, in the south of Maradi. With the drought and locusts, the fabric of his shorts was see-through, short of wearing thin and, standing on the farm with a small spade in his hand, he talks about his “greatest problem”: “the lack of food”.
The younger children are the most affected. Since January, more than 12,000 children with severe cases of malnutrition were saved in the health centers run by the doctors without borders. “Some say that I did not get up simply because I was tired”, stated Rosa Parks, some years ago. “It is not true. I was not physically tired, or at least not more than I would have been after any other day’s work. But I was tired of giving up”.
Rosa Parks died on Monday, in Detroit, at the age of 92 years.
In 1995, by refusing to give up her place in a bus to a white, as the segregationist laws required at the time, this fashion designer from Michigan became the pioneer of civil disobedience by black Americans and their fight for equality. Her arrest had stirred up a wave of indignation.
“For 381 days, people walked for kilometers each day rather than take buses where segregation reigned”, Reverend Jesse Jackson recalled, when her death was announced. “Rosa Parks” gesture inspired a massive resistance movement against segregation and racial discrimination’.
This non violent ground swell, personified by Pastor Martin Luther King, is the origin of some modifications in the North American legislation.

Alors que les médicaments pédiatriques coûtent très cher, les enfants du sida restent les grands oubliés dans la prise en charge de la maladie.
Il est urgent de réagir, nous dit l’UNICEF. « Alors qu’un enfant meurt du sida toutes les minutes, le monde doit agir maintenant de façon décisive. » Rima Salah, la directrice générale adjointe de l’UNICEF, a lancé hier à Paris la nouvelle campagne internationale de l’organisation « Unissons-nous pour les enfants contre le sida ». Impossible de ne pas se dire qu’il était temps... Depuis le début de l’épidémie, les principaux laissés-pour-compte de cette maladie sont précisément les enfants et les adolescents. Et il aura fallu attendre vingt-cinq ans pour que les enfants soient placés au premier plan d’une campagne internationale.
Pourquoi sont-ils les plus vulnérables ? Parce que 15 millions d’entre eux, notamment en Afrique, n’ont plus ni père ni mère. (Ils étaient 11,5 millions en 2003). Livrés à eux-mêmes, ils ne vont plus, dans certains pays, à l’école, parce que les professeurs ont également été décimés par la maladie et parce que ces enfants doivent souvent subvenir aux besoins d’éventuels frères et soeurs et donc tenter de travailler. De plus, la majorité du demi-million d’enfants de moins de quinze ans qui meurent de maladies liées au sida ont été contaminés par leur mère. Or, dans les pays occidentaux, plus aucun enfant qui naît de mère séropositive n’est contaminé grâce aux traitements et aux suivis de la grossesse.
Les traitements justement, seuls 5 % des enfants malades du sida ont accès à des médicaments pédiatriques. Si un traitement générique pour un adulte coûte désormais 150 dollars par an, les formulations pédiatriques s’élèvent à 1 300 dollars par an pour un enfant. L’industrie pharmaceutique néglige la recherche pour les médicaments pédiatriques jugés peu rentables. Il n’existe aucun générique pour les enfants. Conséquence, la moitié des enfants nés avec le VIH meurent avant d’atteindre l’âge de deux ans... Dans l’indifférence quasi générale. Et pour ceux qui survivent et qui ont perdu leurs parents, ils sont laissés sans soins, sans protection, sans assistance.
Alors oui, il est temps d’agir. « On doit sauver les enfants quand on a tout pour les sauver », a lancé hier Rima Salah. La campagne de l’UNICEF se fixe quatre priorités : prévenir de nouvelles infections chez les jeunes en leur donnant accès à des préservatifs, mais aussi à l’information et à l’éducation, véritable « vaccin social », notamment pour les jeunes femmes, les plus vulnérables.
Prévenir la transmission du VIH de la mère à l’enfant. Les traitements et le savoir-faire existent au Nord. Fournir d’ici à 2010 des traitements à 80 % des enfants qui en ont besoin. Et enfin mieux protéger les orphelins en lançant des programmes de soutien de ces familles parfois seulement constituées de fratrie. Mais aussi en faisant pression sur les États pour que des législations visant à protéger les enfants soient mises en place.
Trente-deux pays cibles ont été choisis par l’UNICEF en fonction de la gravité de leur situation face à l’épidémie. On retrouve l’Afrique du Sud, le Malawi, le Mozambique, le Lesotho, où, par exemple, 29 % de la population est touchée par le VIH et où l’espérance de vie a chuté de 60 à 35 ans en vingt ans.

Children with AIDS are the most forgotten set of people, with regards to the care of the disease. Even at that, their medications generally are very expensive.
We need to act urgently, UNICEF tells us. ‘The world must act in a decisive manner when at every minute a child dies as a result of AIDS”. The deputy Director General of UNICEF, Rima Salah, yesterday in Paris, launched the organization’s new international campaign. “Let us unite for children on account of AIDS”. It is impossible not to realize that it is about time…. Since the beginning of this epidemic, the main casualties of this disease have been children and adolescents. And to think that one would have had to wait for twenty-five years in order for children to be placed on priority list for an international campaign.
Why are they the most vulnerable? Because 15 million of them, particularly in Africa no longer have any mother or father. (They were 11.5 million in 2003). Left all to themselves, they longer go to school in some countries, because the disease has equally decimated their teachers and because these children have to often provide for possible sisters and brothers. Therefore they try to work instead. Furthermore, majority of half a million children less than 15 years who die from illnesses linked with AIDS had been infected by their mothers. On the contrary, in western countries, children born by HIV positive mothers do not have to get infected, thanks to treatments and follow-ups during pregnancy.
For treatments alone, only 5% of children sick with AIDS have access to children’s medications. If a general treatment for an adult will eventually cost 150 dollars per year, the one for children will go up to 1,300 dollars per year for a child. The pharmaceutical industry does not pay much attention to research on children’s medications, considered to be less profitable. There is no AIDS treatment for children. Consequently, half of the children born with HIV die before they are 2 years old… a result of an almost general indifference. And for those who survive and have lost their parents, they are left without care, without protection, without assistance.
So, yes, it is time to act. “We should save the children, when we have everything to save them” Rima Salah challenged yesterday.
The UNICEF’s campaign set 4 priorities for itself:
To prevent new infections in young ones, by giving them access to condoms, but also access to information and education, a real ‘social vaccination’, particularly to the young girls, who are the most vulnerable
To prevent HIV transmission from mother to child. Treatments and the know-how exist in the North.
To provide treatment, from now till 2010, to 80% of children who need them,
And finally, to protect orphans better, by sometimes launching programmes for the care of these families, sometimes comprising of concrete solutions and means. But also by putting pressure on the State so that some legislation aimed at protecting children, will be put in place.
UNICEF chose thirty-two targeted countries, according to the gravity of their situation in relation to the epidemic. Among the countries, we have South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique and Lesotho, where, for instance, the HIV has affected 29% of the population and where the life expectancy has declined from 60 to 35 years in twenty years.

« Pour une eau libre, potable et gratuite »
Présidente de France Libertés, Danielle Mitterrand a lancé une campagne pour la reconnaissance d’un droit d’accès à l’eau pour tous.
Aujourd’hui encore, 1,5 milliard de personnes n’ont pas accès à l’eau potable dans le monde. Pour sensibiliser le plus grand nombre à cette question majeure et récolter des fonds afin de développer ses propres projets (www.france-libertes.fr), la Fondation Danielle-Mitterrand lance une campagne qui se traduira par plusieurs réunions publiques en France, en novembre et décembre, ainsi que par un spot télévisé choc : un homme se savonne les mains, dans un lavabo bien propre, filmé d’en haut. Quand celles-ci disparaissent, une langue sort du trou pour récupérer les dernières gouttes disponibles...
Pourquoi cette campagne pour le « droit de l’eau » ?
Danielle Mitterrand. D’abord parce que les témoignages des dommages que cause la politique de l’eau dans le monde se font de plus en plus pressants et de plus en plus graves. Face à cette situation, des populations réagissent, notamment en Amérique latine ou en Inde. Il faut les aider. En France, nous souhaitons sensibiliser le plus grand nombre à ces questions, car ce sont les populations qui ont le pouvoir de faire changer cette politique. Nous lançons par ailleurs un appel de fonds pour nous permettre de continuer à financer des projets locaux, très concrets, qui démontrent à chacun qu’on peut gérer l’eau autrement.
Que réclamez-vous précisément ?
Danielle Mitterrand. Nous nous battons pour une eau libre, potable et gratuite - en tout cas pour la quantité nécessaire afin de vivre dignement. Libre parce qu’elle ne l’est plus, dès l’instant où on la capte pour la mettre en bouteille, ou qu’on signe des conventions pour la puiser dans des nappes phréatiques profondes. Potable, parce qu’aujourd’hui nous passons notre temps à la polluer. Les fleuves le sont à 80 %, les nappes à 60 %, et bientôt n’auront de l’eau potable que ceux qui peuvent la payer, et cher. Gratuite, car nous avons estimé qu’il fallait 40 litres d’eau par personne et par jour pour pouvoir vivre dignement. Ce devrait être un devoir de la société que de mettre en oeuvre cette gratuité.
Cela implique-t-il, partout où c’est possible, de revenir à une gestion publique de l’eau ?
Danielle Mitterrand. C’est vrai, là où les populations se soulèvent, c’est pour s’opposer aux multinationales de l’eau. C’est le cas en Bolivie, en Uruguay, en Argentine, au Brésil... Bien sûr, la question est délicate, puisqu’il s’agit d’entreprises françaises, qui ne font que leur métier, à savoir faire du profit. Elles le font, malheureusement, avec plus ou moins d’élégance et sont désormais contestées en de nombreux endroits. Sur ce sujet, il faut souligner la responsabilité des collectivités qui s’en remettent à ces entreprises dont elles savent que l’intérêt général n’est pas leur souci premier.
L’idée d’un minimum vital gratuit de 40 litres d’eau potable par personne et par jour, que vous reprenez dans votre campagne, a déjà deux ans. A-t-elle progressé ?

Il faut souligner tout d’abord que cette revendication, qui se base sur des chiffres de l’OMS, est tout à fait raisonnable. Ce qui lui manque simplement, c’est la volonté politique. En 1992, les différents gouvernements réunis à Rio avaient promis l’eau pour tous dès 2000. Aujourd’hui, on nous dit qu’en 2015, la moitié de ceux qui en sont privés auront accès à l’eau. Mais en 2015, on nous dira qu’on n’avait pas le budget pour tenir cette promesse. Or, l’argent, il est là, sous leurs mains ! Le budget mondial de l’armement représente environ mille milliards de dollars. En en prélevant seulement un pour cent, on pourrait mettre en place toutes les infrastructures nécessaires à l’accès à l’eau de tous. Malheureusement, tant que nos gouvernants s’en tiendront à l’idée d’un « besoin » en eau - que nul n’est tenu de satisfaire - au détriment d’un « droit » à l’eau - que l’on doit respecter -, on n’avancera pas. C’est pourquoi nous demandons que soit inscrit dans toutes les constitutions, et a fortiori dans la constitution européenne, le droit d’accès à l’eau. To sensitize the greatest number of people to this very important question and to gather funds in order to develop its own projects (www.france-liberté.fr), the Danielle-Mitterand Foundation is launching a campaign, which will be translated into several public meetings in France in November and December; as well as into a ‘hot’ televised public debate based on a man who soaps his hands in a very clean wash basin. Why this campaign for the right to water?
Danielle Mitterand: First of all, because evidences to the damages caused by water politics in the world makes it more and more urgent and more and more serious. Faced with this situation, people react, particularly in Latin America or in India. They must be helped. In France, we wish to sensitize the greatest number of people about these questions, because it is the people who have the power to change this politics. Further more, we are fund raising, to enable us to continue financing these local and concrete projects, showing to each person that one can manage water differently.
What exactly are you asking for?
Danielle Mitterand: We are fighting for available, drinkable and free water, the quantity needed to live with dignity, in any case. Available, because it is no longer available from the moment it is bottled, or that one signs the Conventions to draw from the deep ground waters. Drinkable, because these days we spend our time polluting it. The rivers are 80% polluted, the ground waters are 60% polluted and very soon, only those who will be able to buy it, and expensively too, will have drinkable water. Free, because we have estimated that an individual would need about 40 litres water per day to be able to live with dignity. It should be the duty of the society to make this aspect of it being free possible.
Does this mean a going back to the public management of water where possible?
Danielle Mitterand: It is true. There where populations rise up, it is to oppose the multinational water supply companies. It is the case in Bolivia, Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Of course, it is a delicate question, since it has to do with French firms that are just doing their jobs, knowing how to make profit. Unfortunately, they do it with elegance more or less, and are forthwith protested against from a number of places. On this subject, one must emphasize the responsibility of the community left to these firms, whose primary concern is obviously not of the general interest.
The idea of a minimum amount of 40 litres of drinkable water per person per day, which you are bringing back into your campaign, is already 2 years. Has there been any progress made on that?
Danielle Mitterand: we must emphasize first of all that this claim, which is based on the figures provided by WHO, is completely reasonable. The only missing thing is simply the political will power. In 1992, different governments met at Rio promising water for all by the year 2000. Today, we tell ourselves that in 2015, half of those who do not have water will have access to water. But in 2015, we will be told that there was no budget made to keep this promise. Now, the money is there, under their hands! The world budget on armament revolves around thousands of billions of dollars. In deducting only 1% from it, we can put into place the entire infrastructure needed for the access of water for all. Unfortunately, as long as our governments hold unto the idea of a ‘need’ for water – that no one can be satisfied – to the detriment of a ‘right’ to water, which should be respected, we will never move forward. This is why we are asking that the right of access to water be written in all the constitutions, and, with immediate effect, in the European Constitution. In the project rejected by the French on the 29th of May, it was moreover about a “need”.

Guinée . Menacés, les leaders syndicaux hésitent à braver l’isolement pour s’adresser aux médias comme notre correspondant en a fait l’expérience.
Dès l’annonce de la reprise de la grève générale illimitée, le pouvoir a répondu par une répression sanglante et l’établissement d’un état de siège de vingt heures sur vingt-quatre - allégé depuis hier mais avec seulement deux heures de sortie supplémentaire autorisées. Il est interdit de se réunir, de se déplacer, les communications téléphoniques sont placées sur écoute et la police peut perquisitionner chez les particuliers et arrêter quiconque serait présenté comme violant ces dispositions.
Toute la journée de mardi, nous avons cherché ainsi, en vain, à recueillir les témoignages des leaders syndicaux. Tous nous ont affirmé ne pas pouvoir s’entretenir par téléphone avec nous, voulant protéger leurs familles ouvertement menacées. Tous estimaient avoir été mis sur écoute. Dans leurs quartiers, des tirs étaient audibles à proximité de leurs domiciles.
Seule l’emblématique dirigeante du mouvement, Rabiatou Serah Diallo, faisant fi de ces méthodes d’intimidation, nous a répondu, tard dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi, en prenant mille précautions dans l’espoir de ne pas être localisée. Elle nous a fait part de sa détermination et de celle de son syndicat de ne pas se laisser museler (voir l’interview ci-dessous) bien que, pour l’heure, les têtes pensantes du mouvement ne puissent ni communiquer entre eux ni se voir pour élaborer une stratégie.
Depuis le début de l’état de siège, lundi, vingt-deux manifestants ont été tués par les militaires ou la police, ce qui établit a près de 110 morts le bilan des affrontements depuis le début de la grève, le 10 janvier.

Right from the time the indefinite general strike was announced, the government responded with a bloody crack down and the establishment of a twenty hour per day curfew - lightened from yesterday but with only two additional hours of authorized outings. It is forbidden for people to meet one another, to move around; phone calls are tapped and the police can search individual homes and arrest anyone appearing to violate these arrangements.
Thus all day, on Tuesday, we sought, in vain, to get some information from the trade-union leaders. Wanting to protect their families who were already being openly threatened, they all maintained that they would not able to talk with us on the phone as they all believed that that they were being bugged. In their neighbourhoods, one could hear shootings very near their houses.
Only the emblematic labour union leader, Rabiatou Serah Diallo, who treated these methods of intimidation with contempt, responded. She did so late Tuesday night, taking great precautions so as not to be found out. She hinted us of her and her union’s determination not to be muzzled. Although, at the moment, the decision makers of the movement could neither see nor communicate with each other to work out a strategy.
Since the curfew began on Monday, twenty-two demonstrators have been killed by either soldiers or the police, which, from the confrontation reports, raises the number up to about 110 deaths, since the beginning of strike on 10 January.

Le verdict est tombé. Nous ne pouvons l’accepter. Cinq journalistes algériens du Matin sont condamnés à de la prison ferme pour avoir fait leur métier : informer.
Deux mois de prison pour Abla Chérif et Hassane Zerrouky, également journaliste à l’Humanité ; trois mois pour Youcef Rezzoug, rédacteur en chef du Matin, et la journaliste Yasmine Ferroukhi. Cinq mois de prison pour Mohamed Benchicou, le directeur du Matin, déjà incarcéré depuis dix mois.
Nous demandons la relaxe pour Hassane Zerrouky, Abla Chérif, Youcef Rezzoug et Yasmine Ferroukhi ainsi que la libération immédiate de Mohamed Benchicou.
Nous avons décidé de briser le silence sur la situation des journalistes algériens. La liberté d’expression et la liberté de la presse sont, en Algérie, victimes d’une répression féroce. Pas une semaine ne se passe sans que des journalistes ne comparaissent devant les tribunaux.
Le directeur du Matin, Mohamed Benchicou, est en prison depuis dix mois dans des conditions sanitaires déplorables et son état de santé se détériore. Le Matin, qui diffusait à plus de 150 000 exemplaires par jour en Algérie, a cessé de paraître depuis le mois de juin 2004. Quatre journalistes qui, dans les colonnes de ce quotidien, avaient osé enquêter sur des malversations financières impliquant des proches du pouvoir, sont aujourd’hui menacés d’emprisonnement et d’amendes exorbitantes.
Nous ne pouvons l’accepter.
Les journalistes algériens ont payé un lourd tribut au combat contre l’intégrisme islamiste. Plus de 60 d’entre eux ont été assassinés. Aujourd’hui, un code pénal inique transforme l’exercice de leur métier en acte de délinquance. La répression de la presse en Algérie s’ajoute à l’aggravation des atteintes à la liberté de la presse dans le monde.
Nous tous qui sommes mobilisés pour la libération de Florence Aubenas, Hussein Hanoun al Saadi et de tous les journalistes retenus en otage ou incarcérés, nous nous mobilisons aussi pour la libération de Mohamed Benchicou, la relaxe des journalistes du Matin et l’arrêt de toutes poursuites à l’encontre de nos consœurs et confrères algériens.

The verdict has been pronounced. We cannot accept it. Five Algerian journalists, of the Matin newspaper, have been sentenced to prison for doing what they know how to do best: informing the public.
Abla Chérif and Hassane Zerrouky, also journalists with Humanité were sentenced to two months imprisonment; three months for Youcef Rezzoug, editor-in-chief of the Matin, and for Yasmine Ferroukhi, a female journalist. The editor of the Matin, Mohamed Benchicou, who has been in prison for the past ten months, was sentenced to a further five months imprisonment.
We demand the release of Hassane Zerrouky, Abla Chérif, Youcef Rezzoug and Yasmine Ferroukhi, as well as the immediate release of Mohamed Benchicou. (See petition URL at the bottom of this article)
We have decided not to keep silent on the matter concerning the Algerian journalists. The freedom of speech and the freedom of the press are, in Algeria, victims of a terrible repression. A week does not pass by without one journalist or another appearing before the courts.
The Editor of the Matin, Mohamed Benchicou, has been in prison for the past ten months under deplorable health conditions and the state of his health continues to deteriorate. The Matin, of which more than 150,000 copies used to be printed per day in Algeria, has disappeared from the news stands since June 2004. Four columnists, who, in this same newspaper, dared to make inquiries into misappropriation of funds implicating some people closely linked to the government, are today being threatened with imprisonment and being charged exorbitant fines.
We cannot accept this.
Algerian journalists have paid a heavy tribute to the battle against Muslim fundamentalism. More than 60 of these journalists have been assassinated. Today, an iniquitous penal code transforms the practicing of their profession into delinquent acts. The suppression of the freedom of the press in Algeria contributes to the aggravation of the attacks on the global Freedom of the Press.
All of us, who are mobilized for the release of Florence Aubenas, Hussein Hanoun Al Saadi and of all the other journalists, either being held hostage or imprisoned, also commit ourselves to the release of Mohamed Benchicou, the release of the other journalists also working for the Matin newspaper and for the ceasing of all further harrassments of our Algerian colleagues.
We pledge our support for Youssef Rezzoug, Yasmine Ferroukhi, Habla Chérifand Hassane Zerrouky.

Émotion à Lille après la profanation de tombes juives
Antisémitisme . La profanation, dimanche matin, du carré juif du cimetière de Lille Sud, suscite depuis indignation et colère.
Hier, une manifestation silencieuse était organisée au cimetière de Lille Sud, où cinquante et une tombes du carré juif ont été dégradées dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche. Faisant part de son « indignation et de son soutien aux familles touchées par cet acte odieux », le ministre de l’Intérieur François Baroin, a condamné « avec la plus grande fermeté les exactions commises. »
Les parties verticales des pierres tombales ont été descellées et posées au sol, certaines se brisant dans la chute. « C’est un symbole de lâcheté et d’antisémitisme », a estimé M. Hanoh, un membre de la communauté juive lilloise dont la tombe du grand-oncle a été dégradée. Le Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France (CRIF) a fait part de son indignation face à un « acte odieux » perpétré la veille des fêtes de Pessah, la Pâque juive.
Ces événements constituent la première affaire de cette ampleur dans la région. « Depuis 2003, nous avons constaté une baisse des actes antisémites dans le Nord », a souligné Daniel Canépa, préfet de la région Nord-Pas-de-Calais, les estimant à cinq ou six chaque année et évoquant principalement des agressions verbales et graffitis.
« L’antisémitisme est un poison qu’il faut combattre avec une vigilance cons- tante », a déclaré Marie-Georges Buffet, exprimant sa « très vive colère et sa profonde indignation ». Ségolène Royal a, elle, rappelé « sa détermination à lutter contre toutes les formes de haine et de violence ».
Sans surprise, Jean-Marie Le Pen a banalisé les événements, parlant d’un acte « récurrent, qui intervient à peu près à chaque campagne électorale » et évoquant une « possible provocation ».
Une enquête a été ouverte après la demande de Jacques Chirac de « tout mettre en oeuvre pour retrouver les auteurs de cette infamie afin qu’ils soient sévèrement punis ». Ceux-ci encourent trois à cinq ans de prison.
Pour la Ligue des droits de l’homme, cette profanation « n’est pas qu’un fait divers » mais bien « un nouveau signe de la persistance de l’antisémitisme dans notre pays ». L’association a rappelé dans un communiqué que la lutte contre la haine de l’Autre est plus nécessaire que jamais. « Puissent les citoyens, à la veille de choix décisifs, en tirer toutes les conséquences », concluait-elle.

Not surprinsingly, Jean-Marie Le Pen* treated the incidents with triviality, talking about “recurrent activities, which take place near the time of every electoral campaign” and arousing a “possible provocation”. An inquiry was set up after Jacques Chirac requested that “all machinery should be put into motion to find the perpetrators of this loathsome deed, so that they will be severely punished.” The culprits would incur about three to five years imprisonment.
For the League of Human Rights, this desecration “is not only just a news item” but also “a new sign of the persistence of anti-Semitism in our country.” The Association mentioned, in a communiqué, that the battle against the hatred of the other is more necessary now than ever before. “May citizens take all the consequences into consideration before making decisive choices," their spokesman concluded.
