Cymbidiums are usually epiphytic in nature, and even the terrestrial species have similar requirements to the epiphytes. Although they grow best in moisture-retaining rotting wood, leaf litter or other accumulated plant debris, they dry out rapidly and their roots are never wet for long. The potting mix should be open enough to allow free drainage, but should also be able to absorb and hold moisture. The openness of the compost will to some extent depend upon the frequency with which the grower can water his plants. More frequent watering will allow a more open mix to be used. This has the advantage of allowing enough air to reach the roots, as in the wild epiphytic plants, and also allows easier control of soil moisture in the winter, when excess water can easily cause the roots to rot.
Ideally, a compost should maintain its openness for several years, so that repotting is only necessary once every three years or so. Large chips of pine bark form the basis of many potting mixtures, serving to keep the compost open. Perlite, and sometimes coarse peat, are also added to hold moisture, especially important for amateur growers who cannot ensure regular watering. Coarsely crushed charcoal helps to keep the compost fresh, by absorbing detrimental chemicals, such as salts from excess fertiliser or water and plant decomposition products. Small amounts of dolomitic limestone are sometimes added as well, to balance the acidity caused by phenolic acids released as the pine bark breaks down.
A general compost which could be varied to meet the growers' personal requirements would include approximately 3 parts of coarse bark flakes, 1 part of coarse peat, 1 part of perlag and 1 part of coarse charcoal chips.

Un sustrato general que se puede ir variando para satisfacer las necesidades concretas de cada cultivador incluiría tres partes de corteza de árbol en trozos grandes, una parte de turba de grado grueso, una parte de perlag y una parte de trozos de carbón vegetal grandes.

Welcome to my profile!
A qualified English and French into Spanish translator, I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Translation Studies awarded by the University Jaume I (Castellón, Spain, 1995-1999). I have been working in the translation field for 20 years now, first in an in-house position as project manager and proofreader in a book translations company, and since 2009 as self-employed, when I started translating for a leading agricultural machinery manufacturer. I have experience translating brochures, technical specs, press releases and website texts about ploughs, cultivators, seed drills, fertilizer spreaders, cutters and shredders, and more.
I also work in the publishing field, where I offer translation and proofreading services, as well as final quality control of DTPed texts. I mainly work with travel guides, cookery books, handcrafts and children's literature. I am therefore specialized in processing texts before they are published to ensure that they are accurate, make sense and read well.
I am happy to provide both translation and proofreading services, as well as final pre-delivery check of texts in Spanish. Additionally, I work with InDesign (CS6 and 2020 versions) for Mac, so I can deliver your documents typeset if needed.
I am also an experienced transcriber: I can work with regional accents and multiple voices, and once completed the transcripts are fully proofread against the original audio.
