Les joies-du-matin. Ce sont des sortes de soleils roses aux pétales liquides. La sève jaillit le long de la circonférence du cœur, formant fontaine de douze ou quatorze jets. Des champs immenses de joies succèdent aux pusztas de lavande, rafraîchissant l’atmosphère de leurs humides cultures ; car la joie se cultive ou plutôt se force au moyen d’engrais appropriés et de repiquages ; la fleur brute est de coloration terne et sa sève coulant goutte à goutte ne forme que des embryons de pétales.
Il n’est rien de plus beau qu’un champ de joies-du-matin en pleine floraison ; et quel bien-être de s’allonger nu sous les cascatelles ! La peau s’adoucit, elle devient suave comme une corolle d’églantine, et l’esprit se décante de ses peines ; on resterait des jours entiers sous ces pluies de Jouvence.
Les barcarolles. Coques légères qui restent au sol mais dont la tige se dessèche et rapidement se casse, laissant la fleur vaquer de-ci de-là. Par temps de bise, les barcarolles se déplacent et s’égaillent sur des kilomètres de lande ; on dirait d’une fête japonaise. Le mauve et le jaune dominent.
Les vergedouces. Ce sont des cactées sans épines, lisses et très proliférantes. Elles forment des arbustes qui le matin, pour être gros comme de framboisiers, seront vers seize heures de la dimension d’un cèdre. Au premier souffle du large, vers dix-neuf heures, les sels marins attaquent la pulpe délicate qu’ils rongent incontinent et l’arbre n’est plus qu’un squelette, puis un petit tas de fibres.
Les pavots-chiens. Plantes dangereuses parce qu’elles s’attaquent à l’homme. Nous les avons vues de loin, massées sur une colline qu’elles teintent de pourpre et d’hyacinthe. Elles aboient au passage de la chair fraîche. Les étourneaux qui s’abattent sur la colline, séduits par sa couleur qu’ils prennent pour celle de cerises, sont vite dévorés. Chaque fleur est pourvue d’un pédoncule extensible ; elle saute sur sa proie et la mord ; morsure venimeuse qui facilite et écourte la lutte contre l’adversaire.
Les oublieuses-d’amertume. Fleurs exquises, profondément voilette et odorantes, nacrées d’émeraude et frissonnantes de désir. Elles furent transplantées en cette région maritime, bien trop secrètes de nature pour en être originaires. Texte source - français Coopération internationale : Framatome forme le personnel émirien de Nawah sur la centrale de Nogent
Début mai, EDF et Framatome ont accueilli du personnel de l’exploitant nucléaire émirien Nawah*, filiale d’Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), pour une formation en immersion sur l’arrêt de tranche du réacteur 1 de la centrale de Nogent.
Le site a été choisi pour la pertinence des activités de maintenance et de modifications réalisées lors de cette visite décennale (VD). Le contenu de la formation a été élaboré conjointement par EDF et Framatome. Le personnel emirati a pendant deux semaines alterné formations théoriques et visites sur le terrain : opérations de maintenance des pompes primaires, inspection des manchettes thermiques avec Intercontrôle, déchargement du combustible et chantier de rénovation du contrôle commande M2C.
Cette formation s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un accord-cadre de longue durée signé en 2018 entre EDF et Nawah, aux termes duquel EDF accompagnera Nawah dans l’exploitation et la maintenance de la centrale nucléaire de Barakah, la première du Monde Arabe, via une large gamme de prestations de services. Dans le cadre du programme Booster, Framatome est associé à cette démarche, présageant de nouvelles opportunités.
Traduction - anglais International cooperation: Framatome trains the Emirati personnel of Nawah at the Nogent nuclear power plant
At the beginning of May, EDF and Framatome welcomed the personnel of the Emirati nuclear operator, Nawah*, a subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), for an immersion training on a unit outage of Nogent nuclear power plant reactor 1.
The site was selected because of the relevance of the maintenance and modification activities performed during this ten-yearly outage programme. The training content was jointly developed by EDF and Framatome. Over two weeks, the Emirati personnel alternated between theoretical classes and field visits: reactor coolant pump maintenance operations, inspection of thermal sleeves with Intercontrôle, fuel unloading, and the M2C instrumentation & control renovation worksite.
This training is part of a long-term framework-agreement signed by EDF and Nawah in 2018, at the end of which EDF will help Nawah with the operation and maintenance of the Barakah nuclear power plant, the first in the Arab world, through a broad range of services. As part of the Booster programme, Framatome is participating in this process, which opens the way to new opportunities.

L’extension de la durée d’exploitation des tranches 900 MWe du Parc français
Le Réacteur N°1 de Tricastin, mis en service en décembre 1980 est à l’arrêt depuis le 1er juin pour sa 4eme visite décennale (VD4) , une première pour le parc nucléaire Français. Cette visite sera décisive pour l’avenir de ce site EDF dont la durée de vie était initialement prévue pour 40 ans. Six mois d'arrêt sont prévus avec un double objectif : Examiner en profondeur l'état de l'installation en tenant compte de son vieillissement pour vérifier sa conformité au référentiel de sûreté applicable, et améliorer son niveau de sûreté en intégrant les progrès techniques réalisés sur les réacteurs les plus récents. En 2020 l’Autorité de Sûreté prendra position sur les études génériques des VD4 du palier 900 MWe (CPY) et en 2022 sur la poursuite de fonctionnement de Tricastin 1. D’autres réacteurs 900 MWe du parc français pourraient prétendre à l’extension de leur durée d’exploitation, cette campagne s'étendrait sur 10 ans.
Framatome OEM du parc français, bien placé pour accompagner EDF sur ce challenge
Pour Framatome, les opérations planifiées lors de cette VD4 mobilisent environs 150 intervenants, 70 bureaux sont mis à disposition par EDF. Les contrôles de la cuve seront réalisés avec la MIS*. Un Remplacement des Mécanismes de Commande de Grappes (RMCG) et potentiellement un Remplacement de Tube Guides (RTG) sont prévus ainsi que la rénovation du Contrôle Commande dans le cadre du contrat E2C. Enfin nombre de modifications techniques pour amener le réacteur au niveau attendu, ainsi que des missions de support au client pour le pilotage de prestations complexes. L’ EHP : Epreuve Hydraulique Primaire (EHP) et les opérations d’ouverture fermeture cuve (OFC) clôtureront l’ensemble de nos prestations sur le circuit primaire. Des opérations qui sont à la hauteur des capacités de Framatome qui bénéficie du REX récent des VD3 des réacteurs 1300 MWe de Paluel, Flamanville et Nogent.

Traduction - anglais Installed Base BU joins forces with EDF to prepare the future of the Tricastin power plant
Extending operating time of 900 MWe units of the French fleet
Tricastin Reactor 1, commissioned in December 1980, has been shut down since 1 June for its 4th 10-year outage (VD4), a first for the French national fleet. This outage will be decisive for this EDF site for which a lifetime of 40 years was initially planned. A 6-month shutdown is scheduled with a dual objective: In-depth examination of the facility’s condition taking ageing into consideration in order to check compliance with the applicable nuclear safety reference framework, and improve its level of nuclear safety by integrating the technical advances of the most recent reactors. In 2020 the French Nuclear Safety Authority will take a position on the general VD4 studies of the 900 MWe series (CPY) and in 2022, on continued operation of Tricastin 1. Other 900 MWe reactors of the French fleet could request extension their operating life. This campaign would extend over 10 years.
Framatome is an OEM for the French fleet, well positioned to assist EDF with this challenge
For Framatome, the operations scheduled during this VD4 will mobilise around 150 employees, with 70 offices made available by EDF. Reactor vessel inspections will be performed with the MIS*. Replacement of the control rod drive mechanisms (RMCG) and, potentially, replacement of the guide thimble (RTG) are planned, as well as instrumentation & control renovation as part of the E2C contract. Finally, there will be a number of technical modifications to bring the reactor to the expected level as well as actions to support the customer in managing complex services. EHP: The primary hydrostatic test (EHP) and the reactor vessel opening and closing operations will conclude our services on the primary cooling system. These operations are on a par with Framatome’s capacities, which were strengthened by recent lessons learned from VD3 in 1300 MWe reactors at Paluel, Flamanville, and Nogent.

À Barnwood, au sein des équipes d’EDF Energy, un collaborateur de Framatome deviendra prochainement le point d’entrée privilégié au sein de l’organisation – a One-stop-shop – : tel est le concept « gagnant-gagnant » du « Resident Engineer ». Intégré au sein de l’organisation du client et au plus proche des opérations, cet(-te) ingénieur(-e) Framatome va non seulement résoudre plus rapidement les problèmes rencontrés sur site, mais va aussi aider à détecter et à résoudre d’autres problématiques grâce à ses expériences antérieures. Convaincu de la valeur ajoutée de cette nouvelle approche, l’électricien s’est engagé sur un contrat de 5 ans avec Framatome.
S’appuyer sur un retour d’expérience unique au monde

This ability to propose new ideas is particularly valued by operators, who often find themselves dealing with non-specialised design offices that lack this operating feedback specific to the nuclear field.
Understanding the customer’s challenges directly, in the field
This approach was proposed by the Installed Base Business Unit, in response to EDF Energy’s challenges. Framatome will thus provide the utility with support in several areas: finding solutions for standardising computer codes, and dealing with cracking in graphite bricks, ageing in the advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) fleet, and operation-stage issues with the new EPR technologies.
For Dave Mallaburn, Head of Engineering at EDF Energy, the presence of the “Resident Engineer” is considered very positive, because he or she is a single access point to Framatome’s various areas of expertise. This person also gives Framatome a better view of the challenges facing the engineering teams at EDF Energy in Barnwood, on a daily basis.

Noetics
Noetics offers a way of understanding how texts can elucidate the world. This poses serious challenges for editors and translators but remains immensely rewarding. Committed to literary texts, I completed an internship at Dalkey Archive Press in 2014, a US publisher specializing in contemporary literature. In 2018, I obtained an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Related fiction projects include the novels “Un mage en été” (“A Mage in Summer”) by Olivier Cadiot and “La vocation suspendue” (“The Suspended Vocation”) by Pierre Klossowski. Poetry projects include the work of Jean de Breyne and Jean-Louis Giovannoni. I have also edited works such as a new translation of “Elsa” (Louis Aragon) and the transcript for a documentary film on Le Corbusier. I am currently editing/proofreading articles for “Religiographies,” an online journal for the academic study of religious phenomena.
Nuance
Academic writing and institutional communication both require getting the facts, data, and messaging across clearly and effectively, as many forms of expression must. What sets these fields apart is their ability to generate knowledge and create value by asking compelling questions. How does this nineteenth-century neurologist contribute to our understanding of multiple sclerosis? How does funding this anthropological fieldwork enhance our university’s image? The answers to these questions come down to exacting, nuanced writing, which fosters transmission and comprehension. In my translation of academic works, such as two biographies and a monograph on Sufism, and in my editing of scientific articles, especially in the area of neuroscience, I focus on the details to capture the overall meaning. In other words, I help communicate outcomes and messaging through nuanced editing and translation.
Neuroscience and Neurology
My desire to write accurately and aptly has always been tied to my interest in science, particularly neuroscience. In addition to a BA in French, I did undergraduate research in a neurobiology lab and spent my year abroad in France studying life sciences at Université de Montpellier II. As a translator and editor, I actively seek out projects in the fields of neuroscience and neurology. Examples include scientific articles on mirror neurons, yawning, stroke, computer-assisted neurosurgery, and dysphasia, along with a book-length biography of the nineteenth-century neurologist Georges Gilles de la Tourette, and an eighteenth-century case history of a rare sleep disorder.
Nuclear Technologies and Engineering
Translating French technical documentation into English has naturally led me to focus on nuclear energy. Over 75% of domestic electricity in France comes from nuclear power plants. French technologies at all stages of the fuel cycle constitute a major export. Working with specialized agencies, I have translated a number of documents for key nuclear players in France, including CEA, IRSN, ANDRA, and EDF. For a period of over 6 years, I worked directly with Areva, a nuclear prime contractor with projects around the world. In addition to translating requests for proposals, contracts, requisitions, specifications, and standards, I have gained experience with engineering disciplines that interface with nuclear technologies. Working in Areva offices to handle their confidential documents, I was able to consult mechanical, electrical, I&C, and civil engineers for clarification and terminology.
2021 Update: In addition to Georges Gilles de la Tourette: Beyond the Eponym, a 500-page biography of the famous neurologist, I also recently completed the biography Jean-Baptiste de La Salle: A Mystic in Action, forthcoming in 2022.
2022 Update: I recently completed the translation of a fascinating book about Sufism, examining the sociological and anthropological dimensions of this mystical branch of Islam.
2023 Update: Further to my translation of a book on Sufism (Sufism in Europe: Islam, Esotericism, and New Age), published in 2024 by Edinburgh University Press, I'm now editing articles for Reliographies, an online journal for the academic study of religious phenomena.
2025 Update: Last year, I translated wall labels for two exhibitions at the BNF (France's national library in Paris), one dedicated to the beloved French writer Colette.
