Le corps de Maurice Toussaint, dit Momo, ou Toutousse, selon le degré d’intimité dans lequel on s’était trouvé avec le défunt, fut découvert à basse mer par Aimable Maugracieux, ci-devant maître canonnier, présentement en retraite.
Il reposait sur la vase noire du Scorff, les bras en croix au milieu du parc à bois de la Compagnie des Indes, et devait à la bretelle de sa besace de n’avoir pas été emporté au large par le jusant. En effet, celle-ci s’était prise dans un des pieux vermoulus qui servaient autrefois à retenir les troncs dont on faisait les navires, et qui trempaient là de longs mois, immergés au gré des marées. Cette pratique avait pour effet d’habituer ces terriens à ce qui serait désormais leur élément, la mer, lorsque les charpentiers de l’Arsenal tout proche les auraient bien sûr débités en quilles, membrures, jambettes, bordés et autres mille pièces de bois qui, une fois assemblées devenaient par le génie de l’homme, un vaisseau de guerre.
A ces pieux destinés à retenir d’autres troncs que des troncs humains, Toutousse s’était sans vergogne amarré pour son dernier voyage.
Aimable Maugracieux surpris, s’arrêta, demeura un temps immobile comme s’il doutait de sa raison, puis jura devant sa macabre découverte :
- Nom de Dieu !
Et s’en approcha prudemment, comme s’il craignait une quelconque entourloupette de la part du défunt.
Toutousse, de son vivant, n’avait jamais fait de mal à personne. C’était un doux clochard aux ambitions limitées à deux objectifs bien précis : trouver à boire quand il se réveillait, et dormir quand il avait bu.
Cette fois il avait bu plus que de raison, et d’un liquide dont son organisme n’avait pas plus l’habitude en usage externe qu’en usage interne : de l’eau ! Et de l’eau salée de surcroît ! Un liquide enfin qui ne lui filerait pas la gueule de bois puisque la gueule n’est-ce pas, on ne la ressent vraiment qu’au réveil et que là, Toutousse paraissait parti pour un sommeil qui promettait d’être éternel.
Inoffensif de son vivant, la mort ne l’avait pas rendu redoutable. Néanmoins… On ne sait jamais. La face camuse d’Aimable Maugracieux se renfrogna sous le coup de la contrariété. Il allait falloir qu’il prévienne les flics et il n’était pas loin de prévoir des irritations de ce côté-là. Questions, témoignage, bref, perte de temps. Rien de bon, vraiment rien de bon !
De plus, il avait pensé ramener quelques beaux bigorneaux pour son souper et maintenant c’était foutu. Pourrait-il jamais manger des bigorneaux, Aimable Maugracieux ? Pas sûr ! Les orbites creuses du cadavre en abritaient quelques beaux spécimens, ce qui n’est pas fait, il faut en convenir, pour mettre un honnête homme en appétit.
Juste retour des choses. Toussaint, de son vivant, avait fait de leur cueillette son industrie principale. Avec une incomparable dextérité, fruit d’une longue expérience ; il les dénichait dans les petits goémons de la vasière. Quand son seau en plastique était plein, parfois même avant, quand fatigue et soif se faisaient trop cruellement sentir, il partait les vendre à Lorient ou les échanger, chez un mareyeur de Kéroman, contre un litre de rouge, son unique unité de valeur en matière de troc.
Pour ce faire, il empruntait la passerelle métallique du pont de chemin de fer. Celle-ci surplombe le Scorff d’une quinzaine de mètres, hauteur vertigineuse quand le vent souffle lugubrement dans les croisillons métalliques de sa structure, et que le rapide Quimper-Paris l’ébranle dans un bruit d’enfer.
Cependant, si vertigineux, si laid, si venté que soit ce pont, nombre de Lanestériens l’empruntent volontiers car il épargne au piéton les inconvénients d’un long détour par le pont Saint-Christophe, ouvert lui à la circulation automobile, et qu’on aperçoit à deux kilomètres en amont.
Ouais, Maurice Toussaint s’était bien occupé des bigorneaux ; maintenant les bigorneaux s’occupaient de lui. Juste retour des choses. Manger, être mangé… dure est la loi de la nature…
Quelques crabes verts s’enfuirent, dérangés par le bruit des bottes d’Aimable Maugracieux faisant ventouse dans la vase gluante, et deux gros goélands gris qui, perchés sur un pieu voisin lorgnaient le cadavre avec délectation, s’envolèrent lourdement en protestant à grand renfort de cris rauques. Ils se reposèrent une vingtaine de mètres plus loin, sans quitter de leur petit œil rond et froid ce sacré morceau de bidoche que la mer nourricière, dans son infinie mansuétude, leur avait apporté.
- Il est mort, constata stupidement Aimable Maugracieux.
Qu’est-ce qu’il croyait, le ci-devant maître canonnier, que Toutousse était là pour son agrément ?
Il demeura un temps les bras ballants, promenant son indécision d’un pied sur l’autre dans un gargouillis de vase, réfléchissant lentement sur la conduite à tenir.Enfin ayant établi de façon à peu près certaine que le quidam ne requerrait pas de soins urgents, il s’éloigna en ronchonnant pour aviser qui de droit.
Maugracieux avait prévenu les flics d’une cabine du bord du quai et ça lui avait coûté un franc cinquante. Un franc cinquante que personne ne lui rembourserait, bien sûr ! Encore heureux que la cabine eût été en état de fonctionnement, parce que des fois, elles refusent de donner la communication et ne rendent pas les pièces. Ca lui était déjà arrivé à Aimable Maugracieux. Même qu’il était allé réclamer à la poste centrale. Et si vous croyez qu’on l’avait remboursé, vous vous trompez !
- Pour un franc ! avait dit la postière d’un air méprisant.
Aimable lui aurait bien claqué le museau, à cette péronnelle ! Il était parti en grommelant, car les autres, les connards qui faisaient la queue, avaient pris le parti de la préposée. Un franc ! Est-ce qu’on emmerde le monde pour un franc ?Un franc, c’est un franc ! se disait Aimable. Et en plus, c’était une question de principe, ce qui faisait que ce franc était doublement symbolique. Mais des principes, c’est bien connu, on n’en a plus dans ce pays. Et c’est bien pour ça que la France va mal.
Ah, il aurait bien aimé les tenir sous sa coupe ces contestataires, quand il était second maître instructeur à Hourtin. Leur en aurait fait baver, nom de Dieu ! Comme à tous ces petits salauds de fainéants que ne branlent rien de toute la sainte journée, et qui cassent les cabines téléphoniques la nuit.
A Police Secours, un flic nonchalant lui avait répondu sans s’emballer, lui demandant d’où il appelait. Puis la communication avait été coupée, et on l’avait rappelé. Le flic voulait s’assurer qu’il n’avait pas affaire à un plaisantin. Un plaisantin ? Aimable plaisanter ? Ah mais, on ne le connaissait pas ! Là-bas, près du macchabée, les goélands resserraient le cercle. Tout à l’heure, le plus hardi d’entre eux arracherait un morceau de barbaque et ce serait le signe de la curée. S’ils tardaient trop, ces cons de flics ne trouveraient que des os…
Un train passa au ralenti sur le pont métallique, l’acier grondant contre l’acier. Aux fenêtres éclairées, on voyait distinctement les silhouettes des voyageurs dans la tiédeur de leurs wagons. Plus bas, vers la mer, les bâtiments de la Marine nationale se fondaient dans le gris ambiant. Vers le pont Saint-Christophe, des baraques mouillées dans le chenal nageaient paresseusement dans le courant. Le boulevard Normandie Niémen qui borde le Scorff était désert. De temps en temps une voiture passait dans un chuintement de pneus sur l’asphalte mouillé.
Soudain les événements parurent se précipiter. Il y eut d’abord la voiture blanche des flics avec son gyrophare bleu et sa sirène, et puis le fourgon rouge des pompiers, pin pon, pin pon, à fond la caisse, hurlement de pneus malmenés par les freins, et puis, fermant la marche, l’ambulance.
Aimable s’esclaffa amèrement. Une ambulance, ils avaient amené une ambulance, les cons ! Pour un macchabée déjà à moitié bouffé par les bigorneaux ! Ils ne regardaient pas à la dépense, comme tous ceux qui ne payent pas, quoi ! Ulcéré qu’il était devant ce gâchis, Aimable ! Et ça lui faisait encore une plus sale gueule que d’habitude.
Les flics s’approchèrent. Ils étaient deux, en uniforme, avec une femme. Que faisait cette souris avec les flics ? Elle s’approcha d’Aimable Maugracieux :
- Officier de police Mary Lester. C’est vous qui avez téléphoné ?
Stupéfait, Aimable ronchonna un acquiescement. Une bonne femme flic, on aurait tout vu !
- Où est le corps ? demanda-t-elle.
Aimable fit, du menton, un mouvement vers la vasière :
- Là-bas.
- Vous n’avez touché à rien ?
- Non.
- Parfait, allons-y
La femme flic se retourna pour donner ses ordres. Les pompiers sortirent une civière de leur fourgon et les infirmiers allumèrent un clop, adossés à leur ambulance. Fallait pas compter sur eux pour allez patauger dans la vase avec leurs belles tenues blanches. Pratique, l’inspecteur (ou devait-on dire l’inspectrice ?) avait enfilé des sacs plastique sur ses chaussures. Les « en tenue » qui n’avaient pas pris cette précaution, s’en mettaient jusqu’aux chevilles avec force jurons rentrés. Il y allait avoir une sérieuse corvée de pompes ce soir au commissariat.
Aimable accompagna les flics, leur expliquant en quelques phrases rogues, les circonstances de sa découverte. Mary Lester comprit vite qu’il n’y avait pas de traces à trouver. Elle fit signe aux pompiers qu’on pouvait y aller. Le corps fut hissé sur une civière, sans qu’on parvienne à plier les bras raidis qui pendaient de chaque côté du brancard et feu Maurice Toussaint prit le chemin de la morgue.
Aimable, lui, s’apprêtait à regagner son domicile quand la femme flic l’interpella :
- Venez avec nous, monsieur !
Aimable se cabra :
- Mais…
- Vous nous avez tout dit, je sais, mais il faut que j’enregistre votre déposition.
Et, rassurante :
- Ça ne sera pas long.
Ça ne sera pas long ! Elle en avait de bonnes la poulette ! Une demi-heure qu’il moisissait, Aimable, dans la salle d’attente du commissariat. Et pour raconter quoi ? Qu’il était parti vérifier l’amarrage de son canot avant la grande marée, et qu’en retournant, il lui avait pris l’envie de cueillir un hors-d’œuvre de bigorneaux pour son souper. Voilà tout ce qu’il pouvait dire, Aimable ! Ah si, il pouvait ajouter qu’il estimait parfaitement dégueulasse, oui dégueulasse, de trouver des cadavres de clochard presque en pleine ville !
- Donc vous connaissiez la victime, fit Mary Lester en manipulant son crayon bille.
Elle enfonçait le piston libérant la pointe, puis provoquait le déclic qui le rétractait. Et ça faisait clic, clic, clic… Et ça énervait Aimable en même temps que ça le fascinait : il ne pouvait quitter des yeux les mains du flic : clic, clic, clic… Il tressaillit, sur la défensive :
- Je le connaissais… Je le connaissais… c’est vite dit ! Vous avez dit qu’il s’appelait…
- Toussaint. Maurice Toussaint.
- C’est ça. Les autres l’appelaient Toutousse.
- Quels autres ?
- Mais… ses copains… Enfin, j’veux dire les types avec lesquels il causait sur la grève…
- Quels types ?
- Je ne sais pas moi ! Des gars de l’Arsenal, ou de la Fonderie… Il y en a pas mal qui ont un canot. Toutousse ramassait des bigorneaux. Quelquefois il donnait un coup de main pour retourner une plate. On lui payait un coup de rouge, c’est tout !
Mary Lester le regardait dans les yeux :
- En êtes-vous sûr ?
- De quoi ? fit Maugracieux excédé.
- Sûr que c’est tout.
- Ben, puisque je vous le dis ! Clic, clic, clic…
(Elle ne va pas s’arrêter avec ce crayon bille ? Ce qu’elle m’énerve !).
- Il vous a aidé, vous ?
Maugracieux s’indigna :
- Jamais ! J’ai pas besoin d’un type comme ça !
- Vous lui avez parlé tout de même !
- Jamais je vous dis ! Les types comme ça, moi je…je…
Mary Lester attendait qu’il finisse sa phrase. Clic, clic, clic… Comme rien ne venait, elle demanda :
- Qu’entendez-vous pas « les types comme ça » ?
- Ben, bafouilla Maugracieux, les clochards…
- Vous ne les aimez pas !
- Peux pas les blairer, cracha Maugracieux. Des dégueulasses, des parasites, des ivrognes, des crasseux…faudrait…faudrait…
Il en balbutia d’indignation.
Mary vint perfidement à son secours :
- Faudrait quoi, Monsieur Maugracieux ? Les tuer ?
Maugracieux aperçut tout soudain l’abîme qui s’ouvrait sous ses pas, rapidement il battit en arrière :
- Eh, qu’est-ce que vous voulez me faire dire ?
Clic, clic, clic…
- Mais rien monsieur Maugracieux, c’est vous qui le dites !
- J’ai rien dit d’abord, s’emporta Maugracieux ! Juste que je pouvais pas les blairer et que…
- Et que quoi ? fit Mary Lester impitoyable.
- Et que ça devrait pas exister, là !
- De là à les tuer…
- Eh ! doucement, fit Maugracieux en se levant à demi de sa chaise, j’ai tué personne moi !
- On vérifiera, monsieur Maugracieux.
- Vous voulez dire que vous me soupçonnez ? Mais ce type-là, si ça se trouve, il s’est noyé tout seul ! La plupart du temps, il était rond comme une queue de pelle ! Il aura très bien pu glisser à l’eau !
- On vérifiera, dit encore Mary Lester.
- Ah ! geignit Maugracieux, si j’avais su, comment que je serais passé au large ! A cette heure-ci je serais bien au chaud chez moi ! Quelle engeance que ces clochards, même morts ils trouvent le moyen d’emmerder le monde !
Mary Lester n’avait pas relevé la dernière phrase d’Aimable Maugracieux. Elle paraissait rêver. Elle bâilla discrètement derrière sa main droite.
- C’est pas votre condamnation à mort, dit la poulette, juste votre déposition. Vous pouvez la relire si ça vous chante.
- Et comment que je vais la relire, dit Maugracieux en posant sur le bout de son gros nez de ridicules petites lunettes rondes.
Il relut même deux fois, pour bien s’assurer qu’on ne lui faisait pas dire des choses qu’il aurait pu regretter par la suite.
- Ça va ? demanda Mary Lester.
Maugracieux ronchonna quelque chose de pas très amène qui pouvait à la rigueur passer pour un acquiescement. Puis il se pencha et, en tirant la langue, apposa sur les formulaires présentés un paraphe appliqué, aux circonvolutions soigneusement travaillées. Puis, la tête légèrement penchée, il contempla son œuvre d’un air satisfait et tendant le crayon bille à Mary, demanda :
- Ce sera tout ?
- Oui monsieur Maugracieux, dit Mary, ce sera tout. Je vous remercie.
- Pas de quoi, grommela Maugracieux en haussant les épaules.
Il gagna la porte en marchant de travers, comme un crabe et disparut du paysage.

Chapter 1
The body of Maurice Toussaint - variously known as Momo, or Toutousse, depending on one's degree of familiarity with the dead man - was discovered at low tide by Aimable Maugracieux, former master gunner, now retired.
Arms spreadeagled, he lay on the black silt of the river Scorff, in the middle of the lumberyard belonging to the Compagnie des Indes. The water was full of tree trunks, landlubbers that were once left submerged in the tides for months to acclimatize them to the ocean - the element that would become their own after the carpenters of the nearby Arsenal had turned them into keels, ribs, planks and all the other wooden elements from which human intelligence made warships. One of the worm-eaten posts supporting these trunks had caught the strap of his satchel; only this had saved him from being carried out to sea.
To these posts that were destined to hold trunks other than human torsos, Toutousse was shamelessly moored for his final voyage.
Surprised, Aimable Maugracieux came to a halt, stood unmoving for a moment as though he feared for his sanity, then cursed in the face of his macabre discovery:
“For God’s sake !”
He approached the corpse cautiously, as though afraid the dead man might play a malicious trick on him.
During his lifetime, Toutousse had never hurt anyone. He was a harmless tramp whose ambitions were limited to two precise objectives: finding something to drink when he awoke, and sleeping when he had drunk.
This time he had drunk more than was reasonable, and a liquid that he was no more accustomed to using externally than internally: water!And salt water, too! At last, a liquid that wouldn't leave him with a hangover (since it remains true that a hangover is only really felt upon waking) and this time, Toutousse seemed to be off to sleep forever.
Inoffensive as he was in life, death had not rendered him fearsome. Nevertheless…you never know. The flat-featured face of Aimable Maugracieux turned sullen in annoyance. Now he would have to inform the coppers and he was already beginning to anticipate the irritations he might encounter there. Questions, a statement – in short, a waste of time. Nothing positive, absolutely nothing positive!
To crown it all, he had thought he would be taking home some tasty winkles for his supper, and now that was done for. Would he ever be able to eat another winkle, Aimable Maugracieux? Perhaps not! The hollow sockets of the corpse gave shelter to a few fine specimens which, he had to admit, did not really whet a man's appetite.
A certain justice was done. Whilst alive, Toussaint had made their harvesting his main economic activity. With dexterity that was beyond compare, grown of many years' experience, he hunted them out in the swamp. When his plastic bucket was full, or sometimes even sooner, if fatigue and thirst made themselves felt too cruelly, he went off to sell them in Lorient, or exchange them at the Kéroman wholesale fish market, for a litre of red wine - the only currency he used.
To do this, he used the metal gangway of the railway bridge, which hung 15 metres over the Scorff. This was a breathtaking height when the dismal wind blew through the metallic crossbars of its structure, and the ear-splitting Quimper-Paris Express caused it to shudder.
Vertiginous, ugly and windy as it is, many Lanesterians willingly use it, because it saves the pedestrian the inconvenience of a long detour via the traffic-carrying St Christopher bridge, visible two kilometres upstream.
Yes, Maurice Toussaint had taken care of the winkles; now the winkles were taking care of him. Justice was done. Eat, be eaten – the law of nature is hard.
A few green crabs fled, disturbed by the sound of Aimable Maugracieux's boots in the sludgy silt, and two big grey gulls which, perched on a neighbouring post to greedily eye up the cadaver, flew off heavily with raucous cries of protestation. They came to rest again twenty metres further on, their small cold round eyes never straying from the tasty-looking piece of meat that the nourishing sea, in its infinite indulgence, had brought them.
Did he think, this erstwhile master gunner, that Toutousse was there for his pleasure ?
He remained there a while, arms dangling, letting his indecision travel from one foot to the other in the gurgling silt, reflecting slowly on how best to act.
Finally, having almost certainly established that the fellow was not in need of first aid, he moved away, grumbling to himself, to inform the authorities.
Maugracieux alerted the police from a quayside phonebox, which cost him one franc fifty. One franc fifty that no-one would reimburse, obviously! Still, it was lucky that the phone was in working order, because sometimes, they neither allowed you to call nor gave you your money back. That had already happened to Aimable Maugracieux. Even though he had been to the post office to claim his money back. And if you think he found satisfaction, you can think again!
”For one franc!”, the woman behind the counter had said to him contemptuously.
Aimable would have loved to slap her face, that silly goose! He went off, muttering to himself, because the idiots in the queue had taken the side of the postmistress. One franc! Who'd make such a fuss about one franc?
A franc is a franc! Aimable told himself. Not only that, but it was a matter of principle, making this franc doubly symbolic. But it's a well-known fact that principles are a thing of the past in this country. Which is why ffice:smarttags" />France is in trouble today.
Ah, he would have loved to have these anti-establishment types under his authority, when he was second master instructor at Hourtin. He would have given them a hard time, by God! Just like all those bone idle young bastards who do bugger all, all day long, and vandalize telephone boxes at night.
At the police station, a nonchalant officer answered his call without getting worked up, asking where he was calling from. Then the line was cut off, and they called him back. The copper wanted to make sure he wasn't dealing with a prankster. A prankster? Aimable prankster? Ah, but you never know! Down there, near the stiff, the circle of gulls drew back in. Any minute, the boldest of them would pull off a piece of meat, and that would be the start of the free-for-all. If they didn't hurry up, those stupid coppers would only find the bones…
A train slowly crossed the metallic bridge, steel grinding against steel. At the lit windows, the silhouettes of travellers were distinctly visible in the warmth of their carriages. Lower down, closer to the sea, the buildings of the Navy base blended in with the surrounding greys. Towards the St Christopher bridge, the small craft anchored in the channel floated lazily in the current. The Normandie Niémen boulevard, which borders the river Scorff, was deserted. From time to time a car went by, with a hiss of tyres on the wet tarmac.
Suddenly things started to happen. It began with a white police car, siren blaring and blue lights flashing, followed by the red rescue vehicle, its two-tone siren sounding, at breakneck speed, the scream of tyres led astray by the brakes, and then, bringing up the rear, the ambulance.
Aimable snorted bitterly. An ambulance, they had brought an ambulance, the stupid bastards ! For a corpse that was already half eaten by the winkles ! They never gave a thought to the expense, just like all those that don't foot the bills ! Sickened as he was in the face of this waste, Aimable! And this gave him an even more unpleasant demeanour than usual.
The coppers approached. There were two of them, in uniform, and a woman. What was this chick doing with the cops? She approached Aimable Maugracieux:
“Police Officer Mary Lester. Was it you who called us?”
Stupefied, Aimable grumbled his acquiescence. A lady copper, now he’d seen everything!
“Where is the body?” she asked.
With his chin, Aimable indicated the swamp – “Over there.”
“You didn’t touch anything?”
“No.”
“OK, let’s go.”
The lady copper turned back to give her orders. The rescue workers took a stretcher from their van and the nurses lit up, leaning against their ambulance to smoke. No use counting on them to go paddling in the swamp in their beautiful white outfits. The practical-minded inspector (or should it be inspectoress?) had covered her shoes with plastic bags. Those “uniforms” who had not taken this precaution were up to their ankles in mud, biting back the curses that sprung to their lips. There would be some serious shoe-cleaning to be done tonight at the station.
Aimable went with the police, explaining in a few arrogant sentences the circumstances of his discovery. Mary Lester rapidly understood that there were no tracks to be found. She indicated to the rescue workers that the way was clear. The body was hoisted onto the stretcher, without their managing to bend the stiff arms that hung down on either side, and Maurice Toussaint was on his way to the morgue.
For himself, Aimable was getting ready to go home when the lady copper called him –
“Come with us, sir!”
Aimable bristled. “But…”
“I know you’ve told us everything, but I have to take down your statement. It won’t take long,” she reassured him.
Won’t take long ! That’s a good one! Half an hour he’d been festering in the waiting room at the Police Station. And to tell what? That he had gone to check the anchoring of his dinghy, before the spring tide, and that on his way back, he’d been taken by the idea of gathering himself an hors d’oeuvre of winkles for his supper. That was all he had to say, Aimable! Ah, if only he could add that he found it disgusting, perfectly disgusting, to find the cadavers of tramps almost in the town centre!
“So you knew the victim,” said Mary Lester as she fiddled with her biro.
She pushed the button that released the tip, then clicked it back in again. And it went click, click, click…And that got on Aimable’s nerves as much as it fascinated him; he couldn’t take his eyes off the policewoman’s hands. Click, click, click…He winced, on the defensive:
“I knew him…I knew him… that’s easy to say ! You said he was called…”
“Toussaint. Maurice Toussaint.”
“That’s right. The others called him Toutousse.”
“The others ? What others ?”
“Well…his mates…I mean, well, the blokes he talked with on the quayside…”
“What blokes ?”
“I don’t know! Guys from the Arsenal, or the foundry…Quite a few of them have dinghies. Toutousse gathered winkles. Sometimes he gave a hand to turn a dinghy over. In return for a glass of red wine, that’s all !”
Mary Lester looked him in the eye.
“Are you sure?”
“Of what ?” Maugracieux was beside himself.
“Sure that that’s all.”
“I just said so, didn’t I ?”
Click, click, click…(how long could she go on with her biro? So annoying!)
“Did he ever help you?”
Maugracieux was indignant:
“Never! I don’t need a guy like that!”
“You talked to him in any case!”
“Never, I tell you! Guys like that, I , I…”
Mary Lester waited for him to finish his sentence. Click, click, click…Since nothing came, she asked:
The level of his indignation was causing him to stammer.
Mary came, treacherously, to his aid:
“What should we do, Mr Maugracieux? Kill them?”
Maugracieux suddenly spotted the abyss that was opening up before him, and started to back off:
“What are you trying to make me say?”
Click, click, click…
“Nothing at all, Mr Maugracieux, it’s you that’s saying it!”
“I didn’t say anything!” exploded Maugracieux, “Just that that I can’t stand them and that…”
“And that what?” said Mary ruthlessly.
“and that they shouldn’t exist! There!”
“From there to killing them…”
“Hey! Take it easy” said Maugracieux, half getting up from his seat. “I haven’t killed anybody.”
“We’ll be checking on that, Mr Maugracieux.”
“You mean you suspect me? But that guy there, maybe he got drowned all by himself ! Most of the time he was blind drunk. He could easily have slipped into the water !”
“We’ll be checking on that, Mr Maugracieux,” Mary Lester said again.
“Ah !” moaned Maugracieux, “if only I had known, I would have given that body a wide berth ! By this time I’d be nice and cosy at home ! These tramps are such a pain, even dead they manage to piss people off !”
Mary Lester had not noted down the last of Aimable Maugracieux’s sentences. She seemed to be dreaming. She yawned discreetly behind her right hand.
“ You can go home now, Mr Maugracieux, just sign here.”
“ What is that ?” asked Aimable, immediately suspicious.
“It’s not your death sentence,” said the girl, “just your statement. You can reread it if you’re of a mind to.”
“Of course I’m going to read it” said Maugracieux, placing a ridiculous little pair of round spectacles on his big nose.
He reread it twice, to make absolutely sure that it didn’t say anything he might regret later.
“Is it OK?” asked Mary Lester.
Maugracieux muttered something not very polite which could at a pinch be taken for assent. Then he leaned forward and, with his tongue poking out, added his initials with carefully worked convolutions. Then, with his head leaning slightly, he contemplated his work with an air of satisfaction. Proffering the pen to Mary, he asked:
“Will that be all?”
“Yes, Mr Maugracieux,” said Mary, “That will be all. Thank you very much.”
“It was nothing,” muttered Maugracieux, shrugging his shoulders.
He walked sideways, like a crab, to the door, and disappeared from sight.

Background
I studied English Literature at Essex University in the early 1980s and then spent a number of years in residential social work, prior to moving to France in 1991. In 2001, I qualified as a French to English translator by passing the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ Diploma in Translation, with semi-specializations in business and science.
Although I have recently returned to live in the UK, the twenty years I spent building up my language skills through real-life experience continue to serve me well.
I’ve been freelance since 2003, providing French to English translation, proofreading and editing services to translation agencies, a wide range of private companies, and academic institutions.
Skillset
Every translator needs to have excellent, in-depth knowledge of the foreign language from which they work - but this does not stand alone.
I also have a full set of supplementary skills:
-The ability to write well in my native (your target) language
-Thorough cultural knowledge of the foreign country
-Well-honed, practised research skills
-Comprehension of customer needs and context
-The necessary technical skills, tools and resources
