Biertan este o localitate saseasca din judetul Sibiu, atestata documentar pe la 1200.Devine centru infloritor datorita mestesugarilor care il transforma si in important centru viticol.A fost sediu episcopal timp de trei secole.De aceea, Biserica impozanta cu hramul Sfanta Maria e inconjurata de trei ziduri de aparare. Pe la 1300, Biertan e deja amintit in documentele vremii, ca si cetate.
Zidurile cetatii sunt legate prin turnuri, fiecare cu destinatie aparte.
Unul dintre acestea poarta numele de " Inchisoarea Indragostitilor". Aici veneau cuplurile in prag de divort. La sfatul perotului, cei doi soti petreceau aici pana la sase saptamani. Este vorba de o camaruta in care cei doi soti trebuiau sa imparta tot: pat, scaun, farfurie, pahar-toate erau intr-un singur exemplar. Pare ca o incalcare a multor drepturi din zilele noastre si multi ar fi inclinati sa refuze o astfel de solutie. Conform documentelor vremii, in acest timp petrecut aici, cuplurile isi rezolvau problemele si nu mai divortau.
Biserica din Biertan se mai poate lauda si cu cel mai mare altar din Transilvania de la 1500.In plus, usa sacristiei este celebra datorita celor 19 zavoare, care se deschid toate deodata cu o singura cheie.Mecanismul functioneaza si azi.In aceasta incapere, isi tineau satenii bogatiile.
Dincolo de aceste curiozitati, in Biertan pluteste un aer medieval datorita stilului arhitectural, datorita targurilor oragnizate aici pentru promovarea produselor locale(ca o prelungire a activitatii mestesugarilor de alta data) precum si datorita oamenilor care au incercat sa conserver cat mai bine aceste valori.
Cetatea Biertan este inclusa in Patrimoniul Unesco.

Biertan is a small village in Sibiu county, first attested around the year 1200.It becomes a thriving center thanks to the craftsmen in the area, who turned it also into an important wine center.It was an episcopal headquarter for almost 300 years. This is why the beautiful church (Saint Mary) is surrounded by three layers of defense walls.Around the year 1300, it is mentioned as fortress.
The walls are tied with towers, each one with a specific destination.
One of these towers is called "The lovers' Prison".The couples who wanted to divorce came here and spent up to six weeks in a small room.The furniture had only one bed, one chair, one plate and one cup.The two had to share everything and to solve their problems. Nowadays, it seems like breaking a lot of human rights, but back then, the time spent in here had good results and people didn't want to separate any more.
The Church of Biertan has also one of the biggest altars in Transylvania of 1500. Moreover, the door of the sacristy is famous because of the 19 locks that can all be opened in the same time with a single key.The mechanism works today as well. Beyond all these interesting things, there is a medieval air in Biertan due to architectural style of the houses, due to the local markets and fairs that promote local products( as an extension of the craftsmen activity from longtime ago) and mostly due to the people that preserve all this legacy.
The fortress of Biertan is part of Unesco Patrimony.
