Marchands, artisans et guerriers
L’âge du Bronze naît vers – 2200 avec l’invention d’alliages à base de cuivre et d’étain. C’est une avancée technologique révolutionnaire. La possibilité de fabriquer en série augmente de manière exponentielle la production d’outils agricoles et surtout d’armes. Un monde “globalisé” voit le jour, avec une accélération des échanges, de l’économie, de la démographie, mais aussi une distribution plus inégalitaire des richesses et des pouvoirs.
Dans l’Aube, la nouvelle économie du bronze s’introduit petit à petit. Avant -1500, quelques rares vestiges évoquent un territoire encore très agricole. Il est couvert de fermes familiales modestes qui se déplacent après une à deux générations, autour d’une nécropole.
Mais, à la fin de l’époque, des villages plus riches, couvrant parfois plusieurs hectares, se forment. Les inégalités se creusent et les communautés vivent sous la domination de chefs auxquels on rend hommage dans la mort, avec des tombes individuelles, en forme de tumulus. Dans ces sépultures d’élite, les représentations de guerriers et de symboles de pouvoir sont de plus en plus courantes. Elles montrent l’institutionnalisation de la guerre et le nouveau statut de héros accordé au guerrier valeureux.

Nouvelle économie, nouveaux réseaux
Le bronze est un matériau plus performant et plus solide que le cuivre de la fin du Néolithique. La maîtrise de sa fabrication fait apparaître une nouvelle économie et de nouveaux réseaux.
Cet artisanat demande une connaissance experte des minerais ainsi qu’une maîtrise parfaite des arts du feu, car le bronze se travaille à plus de 900°C. Il oblige surtout les populations à contrôler le ravitaillement par échanges, souvent lointains, du cuivre et de l’étain. Ces produits indispensables circulent à l’échelle de l’Europe, des Carpates à l’Irlande, des Alpes à la péninsule ibérique. Tous les autres échanges s’en trouvent facilités.
L’agriculture, l’élevage, la chasse rythment la vie quotidienne, facilitée par les nouveaux outils en bronze. On note le développement des activités textiles.

L’artisanat du bronze
Des objets prestigieux ou quotidiens, des parures, armes et outils sont produits en série grâce au moulage que permet la fonte du bronze. Les objets présentés ici ont gagné la région via le réseau développé de ses cours d’eau. Ils témoignent d'influences diverses dues à sa position géographique intermédiaire.

L’Agriculture
L’agriculture connait de profonds changements. L’efficacité des outils agricoles en bronze, l’introduction de nouvelles plantes font augmenter la production. On cultive jusqu’à six espèces de blé, dont l’épeautre qui revient aujourd’hui à la mode.

Sur la plupart des habitats champenois, on retrouve des outils qui se rapportent à la fabrication textile. Au vu de leur fréquence, on se demande même si il ne s’agissait pas d’une production à visée commerciale. La fibre textile champenoise remonterait-elle à l’âge du Bronze ?

D’autres échanges
Il y a d’autres réseaux d’échanges que ceux du bronze, par exemple pour l’ambre, les métaux précieux ou le verre. Ces perles ont été importées de l’atelier de Frattesina en Italie. Ces instruments de pesée très précis, confirment l’existence de systèmes de poids reconnus sur un large territoire.

Rendre hommage dans la mort
Les sites funéraires de l’âge du Bronze dans les vallées de la haute Seine et de l’Yonne sont particulièrement nombreux. Les tumulus, constructions typiques de la période, recouvraient alors le paysage. Il faut les imaginer, car l’érosion a depuis longtemps effacé leurs tertres.
Très peu d’individus ont accès à la tombe. Les monuments sont réservés à quelques privilégiés, souvent des chefs guerriers, et reflètent une structure sociale très hiérarchisée. À la fin de l’âge du Bronze, des tombes groupées et des nécropoles apparaissent comme celles du Nogentais ou de Marigny-le-Châtel. Après une période d’inhumation, l’incinération des corps se généralise vers -1200 et ne disparaît que dans les premiers siècles de l’âge du Fer. Cette évolution se retrouve sur le site de Lavau.

Des inhumations dans le Nogentais
Vers -1350, le nombre de nécropoles augmente rapidement sur le territoire et, particulièrement dans le Nogentais, sous l’influence de populations nouvelles. L’inhumation redevient la règle, l’architecture funéraire change et de nombreux et riches objets de bronze sont déposés dans les tombes.

Des liens culturels à Marigny
La découverte de tombes similaires à celles du Nogentais, dans le secteur de Marigny-le-Châtel au cœur de la petite vallée de l’Ardusson, est récente. Elle montre les liens culturels entre les groupes de la vallée de Seine et les communautés de l’intérieur des terres au cœur de la plaine crayeuse.

Les premières tombes de Lavau
Au nord de Troyes, le site de Lavau, qui deviendra tombe princière, est d’abord utilisé comme une nécropole. Celle-ci réunit une dizaine de dépôts funéraires de personnes incinérées. Ils s‘agit d’urnes contenant les restes incinérés accompagnés de petits gobelets et de parures métalliques.

La panoplie du guerrier + Le rôle du cheval
L’institutionnalisation de la guerre
Apparue au Néolithique, la figure du guerrier s’affirme à l’âge du Bronze. Ce héros, spécialiste des techniques de combat, dispose d’un armement de plus en plus perfectionné et diversifié. La panoplie du guerrier comprend poignards et haches, puis épées et lances, rapidement produites en très grande quantité. Cuirasses, casques et boucliers protègent le combattant. Le puissant guerrier se trouve dans une position sociale respectée : la guerre, ou tout du moins le conflit, est un état permanent de ces sociétés.
Le cheval tient un rôle déjà important. Utilisé comme animal de trait, il tire aussi des chariots ou des chars de combat. Il devient symbole de l’aristocratie guerrière même s’il n’est pas encore monté. L’ère des cavaliers viendra plus tard, à l’âge du Fer.

Merchants, craftsmen and warriors
The Bronze Age began around 2200 BC with the invention of alloys containing copper and tin. It was a revolutionary technological advance. The advent of serial production exponentially increased the way agricultural tools, and especially weapons, were produced. A “globalized” world was born, and with it an acceleration in trade, economy, and demography, but also a more uneven distribution of wealth and power.
In the Aube, the new Bronze Age economy was gradually introduced. A few rare ruins dating from before 1500 BC show remnants of a territory that was still very agricultural. It was a land covered with modest family farms which moved after one to two generations, centered around a necropolis.
But by the end of this period wealthier villages had formed, sometimes covering several hectares. Inequalities widened and communities lived under the domination of chiefs who were honoured in death by the creation of individual tombs in the form of burial mounds (tumulus). In these elite burial sites, representations of warriors and symbols of power become increasingly common. They demonstrate the institutionalization of war and the new statute of hero granted to the valiant warrior.

New economy, new trade networks
Bronze is a higher performing and more robust material than copper from the end of the Neolithic era. With mastery of its fabrication came a new economy and new trade networks.
This craft industry demanded expert knowledge of ores as well as perfect mastery of ceramics and fire because bronze is worked at temperatures of more than 900°C. Above all, it obliged populations to manage supplies through trading, often at great distances, of copper and tin. These essential products circulated on a Europe-wide scale, from the Carpathian Mountains to Ireland, and from the Alps to the Iberian peninsula. This greatly facilitated trading in general .
The tasks of agriculture, animal husbandry, and hunting that governed everyday life were made more efficient by new tools made in bronze. Of note is the development of textile activities.

Prestigious or mundane objects, ornaments, weapons, and tools were produced serially with the advent of moulds for casting bronze. The objects presented here were spread throughout the area via a developed network of waterways. They testify to various influences derived from the region’s intermediate geographical location.

Agriculture
Agriculture experienced profound changes. The effectiveness of bronze agricultural tools and the introduction of new plants increased production. Farmers cultivated up to six different species of wheat, including spelt (also known as dinkel wheat or hulled wheat), which is once again fashionable today.

Other exchanges
There existed trading networks other than those based on bronze, for example: amber, precious metals, or glass. These pearls were imported from the Frattesina workshop in Italy. Paying respect to the deceased
The Bronze Age funeral sites found in the upper Seine and Yonne valleys are particularly numerous. Burial mounds (tumulus), typical of the period, once covered the landscape. We can only imagine what they must have been like because they have long since eroded away.
Very few individuals had access to the tomb. Monuments were reserved for select privileged individuals, often war chiefs, and reflect a highly hierarchical social structure. At the end of the Bronze Age, grouped tombs and necropoleis appeared, like those in the Nogent area or Marigny-le-Châtel. In about 1200 BC, following a period when burial was the norm for the deceased, incinerating bodies became widespread and didn’t disappear until the first centuries of the Iron Age. This evolution is reflected at the site of Lavau.

Cultural bonds with Marigny
Tombs have recently been discovered in the sector of Marigny-le-Châtel, in the middle of the small valley of Ardusson, which are similar to those in the Nogent area. North of Troyes the site of Lavau, which eventually became a Prince’s tomb, was initially used as a necropolis. It contained ten funeral deposits of incinerated individuals. They consisted of urns containing incinerated remains, accompanied by small goblets and metal ornaments.

The warrior’s arsenal + the role of the horse
The institutionalization of war
First appearing during the Neolithic era, the figure of the warrior continued into the Bronze Age. This hero, a specialist in the techniques of combat, possessed an increasingly sophisticated and diversified armament. The warrior’s arsenal included daggers and axes, then swords and lances, produced quickly and in large quantity. Armour, helmets and shields protected the combatant. The powerful warrior held a respected social position: war, or at least conflict, was a permanent state of these societies.
Horses already played an important role. Used as a draft animal, they also pulled carriages and war chariots. They became the symbol of the warrior aristocracy even though it hadn’t yet risen. The era of the knights would come later, during the Iron Age.
