A lifetime in translation

  • Translator, editor, and writer for many publishing houses in Chile, France
(Sycamore), Portugal (Afrontamento), United States (Casa de las Américas) and
Mexico (translator, editor, and project manager for the translation of the
complete works of Antonio Gramsci from Italian into Spanish for Editorial Nueva
Política). Translator and editor for over twenty Brazilian publishing houses
(Companhia das Letras, Martins Fontes, Paz e Terra, Abril, Vecchi, Cosac &
    Naify, among others).
  • Winner of the 1994 Award
"Highly Recommended Translation for Children", granted by the Fundação Nacional
do Livro Infanto-Juvenil, the Brazilian chapter of the International Board on
    Books for Young People.
  • Translator and editor for Brazil''s Foreign Ministry and other international
    bodies (UNDP, WHO, etc.).
  • Switched to technical translation in 1994, working mainly for Berlitz
Translation Services, translating technical and commercial texts.

Main subjects: telecom, information technology, software
localisation, medical. From the beginning of 1998, my work has been centered
around software localisation, heavy machinery and medical-based content.

Since March 1998, I have been working almost exclusively in SAP-related
projects, first for EMTI Brazil, translating and proofreading SAP's R/3 Help
files and general documentation. Then, from September 1998 to January 1999, for
Manuson Ltd in Dublin, managing a team of 18 translators and proofreaders for
the translation of SAP's training material, and finally, from January 1999 to
April 2001, for L&H Portugal, doing terminology, quality control, and
translator training for the online localization of SAP's R/3 program. During
this time I also worked on side projects for SAP in Germany, writing their
translation manuals and as a consultant on translation methods. I was also
involved in Lernout & Hauspie's machine translation research, as a
consultant in translation memory and example-based machine translation. From
April 2001 to January 2003, I worked for Bowne Global Solutions translating
Microsoft material and for Excel Translations, translating and proofreading
Epson, Iron Mountain, Efficient Networks and PCDoctor material. From February
2002 to April 2003, worked for SAP as a freelance consultant for the development
of a machine translation system for their help files and training material.
From April 2003 to March 2005, I worked on a terminology project for a Swiss company and in the evaluation of a machine translation system for the Brazilian Government. From March 2005 to October 2008, worked for the Medical Devices and Life Sciences departments of a large New York-based LSP as translation quality manager (main editor) and terminologist. From October 2008 to March 2010, worked as the general quality manager/editor/terminologist for all departments of this same NY-based LSP. Working since March 2011 as a freelancer translator/editor for many European and American LSPs.
