R. 3,4 den Konig Mesa von Moab als einen “Schafzuchter”, der dem “Konig von Israel” den jahrlichen Tribut in Form von jeweils 100 000 mannlichen Schlacht- und Wollschafen entrichtete. Dieser Notiz wird ernstlich wohl niemand entnehmen wollen, dass die Moabiter damals noch ein Volk halbsesshafter Hirten waren. Um so weniger ist man gezwungen, Nu. 32 in diesem Sinne zu interpretieren.
Wo kleinviehzucht betrieben wird, da braucht und baut man Hurden zum Schutz der Tiere, und zwar im Fruchtland ebenso wie in der Steppenlandschaft. Es ist darum kaum denkbar, dass die Bewohner des einen Bereiches den andern nach einem ihn so wenig kennzeichnenden und unterscheidenden Merkmal “Hurdenland” genannt hatten. Dagegen spricht auch, dass die Steppenzone sonst nirgends unter dem vermuteten Namen in Erscheinung tritt, wahrend das ost- und westjordanische Kultureland nicht wenige antike Lokalbezeichnungen der Wurzel gdr aufzuweisen hat.
Unser Brief nun vermehrt die Reihe dieser Toponym um ein weiteres Beispiel, das uns, wenn die weiter oben angestellten Uberlegungen nicht trugen, in die Nahe von Rabbat Moab und dann doch wohl am ehesten in den Randbereich des moabitischen Kernlandes fuhrt.
Diese Annahme gewanne an Wharscheinlichkeit wie an historischen Profil, wenn sich das Land Gidir an anvisierten Bereich noch lokalisieren liesse. Durchmustert man zu diesem Behufe den registrierten Bestand der gegenwartigen Orts- und Gelandenamen, so bieten sich zwei Moglishkeiten an; zwei Taler namlich tragen heute Namen, die mit dem alten “Gidir” lautlich harmoniern.
Das einer dieser Taler, Wadi Gedera genannt, ist ein sudlicher Tributar des mittlern Sel el-Mogib (Arnon), ein kurzer Seitenzweig nur, der westlich der Kuppe von Sihan seinen Anfang nimmt. Er wird im Oberlauf flankiert von zwei nahe benanchbarten Ruinenstatten,
die N. GLUECK im Rahme seiner “Explorations in Eastern Palestine” auf ihre Siedlungsgeschichte hin untersucht hat.
Gluecks Lagebestimmung scheint, ubertragen die Karte 1:100 000 South Levant, in das Koordinatenquadrat 216.088 zu fuhren.
Der dem Umfang nach bedeutendere der beiden Siedlungsplatze, Hirbirt Mis’ar, liegt auf der rechten, norderlichen Seite des Wadi Gedera, der andere, Frewan, ihm sudlich gegenuber, und zwar, wenn ich GLUECK richtig verstehe, im Winkel zwischen dem gennanten Tal und dem hier sich mit ihm vereinigenden Wadi Frewan.

Our letter now widens the range of this toponym with a further example that takes us, if the considerations laid out above are not mistaken, close to Rabbat in Moab and then surely most likely to the peripheral region of the Moab heartland. This assumption would gain in likelihood as well as historical profile if the land Gidir still found itself located in the target area. When the registered stock of current place and terrain names are screened for this purpose, two possibilities present themselves; namely two valleys today carry names which correspond phonetically to the old “Gidir”.
One of these valleys called Wadi Gedera, is a southerly tributary of the middle Sel el-Mogib (Arnon), a mere side branch, which takes its beginning west of the crest of Sihan. It’s flanked in the upper reaches by two close neighbouring town ruins whose settlement history N. GLUECK examines in the context of his “Explorations in Eastern Palestine” GLUECK’S orientation, transferred onto the 1:100 000 map of the South Levant , seems to lead to the square with co-ordinates 216.088.The terms of scope of the more important of the two settlements Hirbirt Mis’ar, lies to the right northern side of Wadi Gedera, the other, Frewan, opposite it to the south and in fact if I understand GLUECK correctly, in the corner between the named valley and Wadi Frewan which joins it here.
