After the week-long rain, it was too wet for working in the cotton fields, and there were too many snakes for clearing the swamp of stumps and branches. Isola's mother saw that look come onto her daughter's face. "Don't you go to the levee," she told her. "You stay here and fix the clothes with me."
The water came from everywhere. The river swelled and, once, came within inches of the top of the levee, powerful and deep and dangerous. Puddles formed in the woods, the bosc' her family called it, big puddles like ponds; and fish swam in the water, fish from nowhere. The land itself turned into a patchwork of streams and ponds and puddles. Even stepping on what looked like dry land became a risk: put your foot on a grassy spot and you might find yourself in water over your ankles.
"Where do you think you're going?" her mother said.
"Nowhere. I got to pee."
"You gotta work, that's what you gotta do." She took the dress from her daughter's hand and shook it out. "Look at this," she said. "What's gonna happen to you when you try to get a husband and he sees you do a mess like this with your sewing?"
"Mamma," she pleaded. "Maybe I'm not gonna get a husband."
Her mother made a sound like she was spitting coffee grounds from her mouth. Then she crossed herself. "I pray for you, dear God, what's gonna happen if you gotta be like this?"
Isola rubbed her foot back and forth along the floor, scratching the ball of her foot on a rough spot on the wood. Oswaldo was out hunting frogs with their father for their supper. Angelina was outside in the sun stringing tomatoes to dry. They had picked as many as they could before the rain came and ruined them. Everyone else was outside doing something, and here she was stuck in the house with her mother's prayers and a needle and thread.
Her mother stood and went for a candle and her statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Isola groaned to herself as she watched. Her mother placed the statue on the floor, then lit the candle in front of the statue. She pointed to the floor. "Get down there and pray before the devil takes you to go live with him for good," she said. Isola got down on her knees next to her mother and they prayed: Hail Mary, Our Father, Hail Holy Queen. Then they were quiet for a long time. Isola watched the flame flicker in front of Mary's chipped blue robe. Mary’s face was like a little doll's face, and she looked like a girl, maybe a girl Isola's age, with an expression that made Isola think that Mary's mother must have yelled at her all the time, too.
The Italians worked like animals, her father said, scrounging for a penny every minute of the day. When they weren't working off their shares for Mr. Gracey they were hiring out to chop weeds for other farmers, or they were selling tomatoes or eggs house to house or patching people's clothes or washing them or fixing a wagon for them. A penny here, a penny there, and it all got saved. The black people didn't seem to be as crazy about working and making money as the Italians were, even though they got yelled at more for not working enough, and punished in other ways. Most of the time Isola wished she was a black girl so she could play with Birdie more, or sing with her while they worked in the fields.
Isola's mother reached over and snuffed out the candle with her fingers.
"Can I go pee now?" Isola said.
"Go pee. And then you stop and see why the chickens are so quiet, maybe they got drowned out there. Bring the eggs in."
Isola moved toward the door, relieved.
Everything was happening outside. The sun was already beginning to dry the land, and old Step Hall was bringing a mule and wagon down the road, going somewhere for the boss. He raised his hand to her and waved. She moved past Angelina with her strings of tomatoes, down near the road. Birdie was following behind her father on foot, trailing a branch in the dirt.
"Mornin', Miss Isola," Step said as he drove by. "Glad to see you out and about."

Persino calpestare ciò che sembrava terra asciutta era diventato pericoloso: mettevi un piede su una zolla erbosa e potevi ritrovarti con l’acqua alle caviglie.
«Dove pensi d’andare?» disse sua madre.
«Da nessuna parte. Devo fare pipì.»
«Devi lavorare; ecco che devi fare.» Prese il vestito dalle mani della figlia e lo scrollò.
«Guarda qui,» disse, «ma cosa ne sarà di te quando cercherai marito e lui vede che pasticci fai quando cuci?»
«Mamma» si scusò lei, «forse non mi sposo».
La madre emise un suono dalla bocca come per sputare dei fondi di caffè e si segnò. «Ossignore! Che il ciel t’aiuti! Che ne sarà ti te se sei proprio così?»
Isola sfregò il piede avanti e in dietro contro un punto ruvido del pavimento di legno per grattarsi sotto l’alluce. Suo fratello Osvaldo era andato con il padre a caccia di rane per la cena e Angelina era fuori al sole a legare i pomodori al filo per farli essiccare. Sua madre si alzò e andò a prendere una candela e la statua di Santa Maria Vergine. Quando non stavano lavorando nel loro appezzamento per il signor Gracey, lavoravano ad ore per altri contadini, zappavano erbacce, vendevano porta a porta pomodori o uova delle loro galline, rammendavano o lavavano i panni o aggiustavano i carri degli altri. Un centesimo qui e un altro là e li mettevano tutti da parte. I neri, invece, non sembravano così pazzi per lavorare e guadagnare come facevano gli italiani, anche se venivano sgridati di più perché non lavoravano abbastanza e venivano puniti in altri modi. In the recent past, Gunther Schuller made significant strides fusing classical compositional techniques with jazz. Their intention, however, is to approach this music from the perspective where the composition services to enhance the improvisation. Recent developments have included use of digital acoustic equipment and interactive video projections. They are creating, in poetic terms, an acoustical environment that will expand their musical boundaries into the realm of interactive Musique Concrete. Texte source - anglais What time was it anyway? A hideous clock hung on the gray wall, its electronic buzz, like a nest of wasps, set her on edge. Twelve-thirty. How long had she been daydreaming?
Her sister must be furious by now. Mina could almost hear Paola's perfectly manicured nails tapping away on the nightstand, one tap for each minute she'd been gone.
Her growling stomach reminded her of the missed breakfast, and now a postponed lunch, just to run errands for her sister. Better get going. She swiveled in the chair. Let's see, Paola said the folder was in her in-box, on the file cabinet behind the desk.
Something littered on top of the white folder. A chocolate-covered cherry in gold foil, Paola's favorite candy. Mina's too. Michael must have put it there before he left for Chicago. One of their stupid love rituals, maybe the only one left. To hell with Paola, Michael, and their love games. Her mouth watering, she stripped the wrapper off the candy and lifted the mound of dark chocolate to her lips.
Somewhere in the warehouse, a door slammed. She jumped and the motion sent her chair wheeling. It hit the full wastebasket, which toppled and spilled everything under the desk.
"Maledizione!" Six years in America and she still responded in Italian to every unexpected event. Mina put down the chocolate and crawled under the desk to pick up the trash. Good thing Paola couldn't see her scrunched under the desk collecting garbage. Definitely not ladylike behavior.
Sounds came from the direction of the warehouse, sharp little noises, like high heels tapping on a tile floor. The sound reminded her of a late, late-night TV movie -sinister footsteps right before an ax murderer surprised the naive heroine.
Mina ordered her heart to stop the impromptu tarantella. How stupid. It was probably Elena, coming to clean the office like she did every Saturday. Someone entered the reception area.
"Hey, Elena? It's me, Mina. I'm under the desk."
No answer, non more footsteps. Only silence. But in the few inches between the desk's modesty panel and the floor she could see a pair of pointed red patent pumps.
Relieved, Mina whistled. "Mamma mia, dancing shoes to clean the office? Bet you didn't go home last night."
The shoes moved, beating a staccato rhythm across the tile floor.

Da qualche parte nel magazzino una porta sbatté e Mina sbalzò dalla sedia facendola scivolare via sulle sue rotelline; poi, questa colpì il portaimmondizia pieno che cadde svuotandosi sotto la scrivania.
– Maledizione! – Sei anni in America ed ancora rispondeva in italiano ad ogni evento inaspettato. Mina posò il cioccolatino e gattonò sotto la scrivania per raccogliere l’immondizia. Meno male che Paola non poteva vederla accoccolata là sotto a raccattare i rifiuti: certo non un contegno da signora.
Alcuni suoni, piccoli e taglienti rumori come tacchi a spillo su un pavimento piastrellato, giunsero dalla direzione del magazzino. Un rumore che le ricordò un film visto in TV una sera tardi, molto tardi: sinistri passi proprio prima che un assassino sorprendesse la sua ingenua vittima con un’ascia.
Mina ordinò al suo cuore di smettere l’improvvisata tarantella. Che stupida. Probabilmente era Elena che stava arrivando per pulire l’ufficio come faceva ogni sabato. Qualcuno entrò nella sala d’attesa.
– Ehi! Elena? Sono io, Mina. Sono sotto la scrivania.
Nessuna risposta e nessun altro movimento. Solo silenzio. Ma nei pochi centimetri di spazio aperto tra il pannello sotto la scrivania e il pavimento si vedevano un paio di scarpe rosse, scollate e a punta.
Mina fischiò sollevata. – Mamma mia, scarpe da ballo per pulire l’ufficio? Scommento che ieri sera non sei neanche rientrata a casa.
Le scarpe si mossero, battendo un ritmo staccato sul pavimento piastrellato.

Un tramo de escalera con dos rellanos, en una casa modesta de vecindad. Los escalones de bajada hacia los pisos inferiores se encuentran en el primer término izquierdo. La barandilla que los bordea es muy pobre, con el pasamanos de hierro, y tuerce para correr a lo largo de la escena limitando el primer rellano. Cerca del lateral derecho arranca un tramo completo de unos diez escalones. La barandilla lo separa a su izquierda del hueco de la escalera y a su derecha hay una pared que rompe en ángulo junto al primer peldaño, formando en el primer término derecho un entrante con una sucia ventana lateral. Al final del tramo la barandilla vuelve de nuevo y termina en el lateral izquierdo, limitando el segundo rellano. En el borde de éste, una polvorienta bombilla enrejada pende hacia el hueco de la escalera. En el segundo rellano hay dos puertas: dos laterales y dos centrales. Las distinguiremos, de derecha a izquierda, con los números I, II, III y IV.
El espectador asiste, en este acto y en el siguiente, a la galvanización momentánea de tiempos que han pasado. Los vestidos tienen un vago aire retrospectivo.
(Nada más levantarse el telón vemos cruzar y subir fatigosamente al COBRADOR DE LA LUZ, portando su grasienta cartera. Se detiene unos segundos para respirar y llama después con los nudillos en las cuatro puertas. Vuelve al I, donde le espera ya en el quicio la SEÑORA GENEROSA: una pobre mujer de unos cincuenta y cinco años.)
COBRADOR.—La luz. Dos pesetas. (Le tiende el recibo. La puerta III se abre y aparece PACA, mujer de unos cincuenta años, gorda y de ademanes desenvueltos. El COBRADOR repite, tendiéndole el recibo.) La luz. Cuatro diez.
GENEROSA.—(Mirando el recibo.) ¡Dios mío! ¡Cada vez más caro! No sé cómo vamos a poder vivir.

A destra salgono una decina di scalini. La ringhiera li separa a sinistra dalla tromba delle scale, mentre a destra sono limitati da una parete che si interrompe all’altezza del primo scalino formando, in primo piano a destra, una rientranza con una sporca finestra laterale. Alla fine della rampa la ringhiera gira nuovamente e finisce a sinistra limitando il secondo pianerottolo. Dall’estremità di questo pende, verso il centro della tromba delle scale, una polverosa lampadina ingabbiata in una rete. Sul secondo pianerottolo ci sono quattro porte: due laterali e due centrali, che distingueremo da destra a sinistra con i numeri I, II, III e IV.
Durante i primi due atti, lo spettatore assiste alla momentanea rievocazione di tempi passati, per cui i vestiti sono un po’ fuori moda.
(All’ alzarsi del sipario vediamo l’ESATTORE DELLA LUCE salire faticosamente le scale tenendo fra le mani il suo unto portafoglio. Si ferma qualche secondo per respirare e bussa alle quattro porte. Quindi torna all’appartamento I, sulla soglia del quale lo sta già aspettando la signora GENEROSA: una povera donna di cinquantacinque anni circa.)

While in the last decade I have been translating documents as birth, death, divorce, and marriage certificates, I am especially interested in literary, journalistic, and academic translations.
I held two Masters'degrees in literature (one in Spanish and French from the "Università degli studi di Torino" and another in Italian from the University of Wisconsin-Madison). While in Turin I took some courses in translation theory and in journalism and volunteered for a small Italian newspaper. At the end of my studies in Italy, I wrote a translation from Spanish to Italian of the theatrical play "Historia de una escalera" by Antonio Buero Vallejo.
Later, I earned my second Master's at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I acquired a lot of understanding of academic papers and become a good proofreader and editor of Italian texts.
