We build our lives, a day at a time
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire, and he told his boss of his plans to leave and live a more leisurely life with his wife. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by.
The contractor was sorry to see such a good worker go, and he asked the carpenter to build just one more house as a personal favor.
The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.
When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said. “It is my gift to you.”
The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.
So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then with a shock we realize we have to live in the house we have built.
If we could do it over, we’d do it much differently. But we cannot go back.
You are the carpenter of your life. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Your attitudes and the choices you make today build your “house” for tomorrow. Build wisely!

Nous bâtissons notre vie à chaque moment et jour après jour.
Un vieux charpentier était en âge de prendre sa retraite. Il fit part de ses projets à son patron : il souhaitait quitter son travail pour couler des jours paisibles en compagnie de son épouse. Certes, son salaire leur manquerait, mais ils pourraient se tirer d’affaire.
Le patron, triste de perdre un aussi bon ouvrier, lui demanda de construire une dernière maison : « Au titre d’une faveur personnelle », le pria-t-il.
Le charpentier accepta, mais, au fil des jours il devint évident que son cœur n’était pas à la tâche. Il opta pour des matériaux de qualité inférieure et bâcla son ouvrage. Quelle triste fin pour une carrière aussi remarquable !
Le travail une fois terminé, l’employeur vint inspecter la maison, puis lui tendit les clefs en disant : « Cette maison est à toi. C’est mon cadeau d’adieu. »
Ces paroles lui portèrent un coup au cœur ! Quel gâchis ! Si seulement on lui avait dit que c’était sa propre maison qu’il construisait, il s’y serait pris bien autrement.
Ainsi en est-il pour chacun de nous. Nous bâtissons notre vie jour après jour, sans toujours mettre tout notre cœur à l’ouvrage. Puis nous sommes stupéfaits d’apprendre que nous devons vivre dans la maison que nous avons construite.
Si seulement nous pouvions recommencer, nous nous y prendrions bien autrement. Mais il nous est impossible de revenir en arrière.
Vous êtes le charpentier de votre vie. Chaque jour, vous plantez un clou, ajoutez une planche ou élevez un mur... Vos attitudes et vos choix d’aujourd’hui bâtissent votre maison de demain. Alors, ne manquez pas de mettre votre cœur à l’ouvrage !

Making English meaningful texts available to French readers has been my passion for 17 years.
I translate books for adults and children, of which many are published. I excel in creative writing in translation of quotes and proverbs, philosophical and religious texts, anecdotes, children’s literature and poems...
After philosophical and theological studies at the University of Strasbourg, I devoted many years of my life to voluntary work to help my fellowman in poor English speaking countries of the world. Among other things, for six years, I travelled over the Indian subcontinent with my wife and children, who all became perfectly bilingual (English and French).
I believe there is a great intellectual and spiritual wealth of English texts that can benefit French readers and it is my desire to bring it to them.
I completed a certification at the University of Strasbourg in order to validate my translation experience with a postgraduate master's degree (Master 2) in English-French literary translation.
