The secret patisserie – Gérard Mulot
Gérard Mulot is a splendid patisserie and traiteur in St-Germain. You can't miss it – just look for the white awnings and the imposing towers of macaroons in the window – but you'll smell it before you see it. The scent of melted butter wafts down the block. Inside, the first thing that hits you is colour: jewel-bright strawberies on fruit tarts and patisserie boxes in pistachio, lemon and Gérard Mulot's signature pink.
It's not far from the Jardin du Luxembourg, so you can pick up all you need for a picnic. A sunny day in St-Germain with treats from Gérard Mulot – life doesn't get any better.

The secret bar – La Cagnotte de Belleville
La Cagnotte de Belleville (13 Rue Jean-Baptiste Dumay, 75020) is extremely scruffy but perfectly Parisian. Open from 7am to 2am, La Cagnotte is a true neighbourhood bar. You get workmen grabbing a lightning-quick espresso and mums with prams in the mornings, and artists and musicians with all the time in the world eking out their café au lait, pastis or panaché (shandy) in the day. Later, the crowd gets very hip as people chatter, dream, smoke and drink to loud music – a lot of rock, and The Stones, The Velvet Underground. Over it all can be heard (owner) Charlie's laughter; a huge bark that starts as quickly as it ends.

The secret cheese shop – Fromagerie Trotté
Fromagerie Trotté (97 Rue St Antoine, 75004) is a tiny little shop in the Marais. Two people can barely stand side by side in there, but that's part of its quirky charm. The owner, Pascal Trotté, sells a very personal selection of artisan cheeses, stacked on shelves lining both sides of the narrow space. He specializes in goat's cheese – the scent hits you the moment you open the door. You get lots of locals popping in for a small piece of cheese for lunch, as well as people from much further afield who come because they know about cheese. The shop may be tiny, but there's a cellar on site: Trotté is an expert affineur (a specialist in maturing and ripening).

The secret restaurant – Benoît
I've been eating at Benoît for 25 years. It's an old brasserie in Les Halles, open for nearly a century. The portions and the quality were, and still are, phenomenal. They always slap big hunks of pâté down on the table with the bread. The puddings at Benoît are classics (oeufs à la neige – meringues floating in vanilla custard – and crème brulée): traditional, yes, but when they're done properly, as they are at Benoît, they're very hard to beat.
It's a beautiful room – I love the intricate mosaic floor and brass rails. My last visit was in January this year. I still have the snails, and this time I followed them with a little ragoût of cockscombs, kidneys and veal sweetbreads: stunning.

It begins with a photo of a girl in a graveyard. She's clutching a tiny dog to her breast. She's dressed in rags and clothes she's made herself, knitting them together at night by the fire. She's leaning against a tomb as though she doesn't know who's buried in it. She's obviously been lured here by the photographer with the promise of a meal, a drink or a pipe of opium. The cemetery is merely backdrop. It may as well be a church or the gardens of Versailles.
He feeds the second photograph into the scanner. In this one, she leans slightly forward, displaying the plush white expanse of her Victorian bosom. A prostitute then, or perhaps a bone picker. It’s impossible to tell her age: women of her class aged so quickly in those days, worn down by the impossibility of living.
She has the eyes of a child orphaned by some hideous disaster.

Her face is utterly consumed except for the lobe of one ear. Her little dog licks its own nose. He stands before her silently, admiring the shape and softness of her breasts, the round red apples of her cheeks, sipping his martini, unable to detect a single flaw.
Finally he cups her dimpled chin in the palm of his hand and blows into her face, as you blow into the face of an infant to make it swallow. She blinks and turns her battleship grey eyes upon him for a furious moment, then grabs his proffered martini and sucks at it greedily, gulping and biting the glass, as though it is the first or perhaps last breath of life.
As she lowers the empty glass, she closes her eyes and begins to tremble all over. The glass slips from her hand and shatters on the floor, and in the kitchen her little dog gives a frightened yelp of pain. He steps close to her, slides his hand under her blouse and sucks her fleshy bottom lip into his mouth. She grabs his arm and wantonly pushes her pubic bone against his hip. Then she shudders and shoves him back with the muzzle of a Derringer that was hidden in her homemade bodice.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" she says.
"Kissing you," he says.
"You should be ashamed," she says. "You're old enough to be my grandfather."
"Oh, I'm far older than that," he says. "If you want to do that, old man, you've got to pay me first," she says.
"How much?"
"Two dollars" she says.
"Two dollars?" he says. "I don't know. That's a lot of money. Let me see." He turns out his empty pockets. The buccinator, labial tractor and orbicularis oris muscles of her face contract, whetting the stilettos of her already dangerous upper lip, but compressing her lower lip into a luscious pout.
"I'm no whore," she says.

He’s seen it happen before. Without a set of three com¬plete photos, flaws are introduced into the machine’s genitive modelling. The flaws present as a lack of some basic human need — warmth, companionship, self-preservation, procreation, water: for her it is food. Unless he forces her to eat, she will eventually starve to death.
"What are you doing?" she says as he reaches for the machine.
"I'm very sorry," he says.
"No wait. Please don't," she says. But he shakes his shaggy grey head sorrowfully. The machine spits out her photos. They flutter like brown autumn leaves to the floor.

"I’ll be damned," he says in admiration. He's been so lonely for so long. He takes her
hand and feels its tender strength. "You're a survivor." Maybe he's been wrong all along
to seek perfection.

Un restaurante del Palace ofrece la última cena del buque hundido en 1912.
Era difícil que el menú estuviese a la altura. El Titanic era el buque más grande, rápido y seguro, según se vanagloriaba la publicidad. Un mastodonte mecánico de lujo superior que iba a transportar en su viaje inaugural, el 10 de abril de 1912, a una selección de la gran industria, la banca y el comercio de Europa y Estados Unidos. Así que el menú de primera clase se lo encargaron al gurú de los fogones Auguste Escoffier (1846- 1935), gran renovador de la cocina francesa y alumno aventajado de Antonin Carême, creador de la haute cuisine. Su cometido sería elaborar los platos que tenían que deslumbrar a paladares habituados a lo exquisito.

"Nuestro equipo de cocina ha recabado información sobre las recetas de la época, incluidas las de Escoffier, para que la preparación sea lo más fiel", indicó Pilar Mantara, directora del departamento de gastronomía del Palace, durante la presentación del menú, que se servirá del 1 al 19 de abril por 50 euros (reservas en www.westinpalacemadrid.com).

"Lo más importante del naufragio fue la historia de los pasajeros, y nada lo cuenta mejor que sus pertenencias", señaló Cheryl Muré, directora de educación de la compañía, en la inauguración, el pasado noviembre.
Quizá así uno pueda hacerse una idea de lo que paladearon el millonario promotor inmobiliario John Jacob Astor IV, el industrial Benjamin Guggenheim o los jóvenes y riquísimos madrileños Víctor Peñasco y Castellana y María Josefa Pérez de Soto y Vallejo (que fue la única de este grupo que sobrevivió).

A restaurant at the Palace recreates the last dinner served on the famous 1912 wrecked liner.
Creating a menu worthy of the Titanic was no easy task. Advertisements boasted about it being the biggest, fastest and safest liner ever built. On the 10th of April, 1912 this overwhelmingly luxurious 'sea mastodon' set off on its inaugural journey with the crème de la crème of the industry, banking and commerce sectors from Europe and America on board. The menu for the first-class passengers was thus commissioned to Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935), chef extraordinaire, innovator of French cuisine and protégé of Antonin Carême, the creator of haute cuisine. Escoffier's mission was to cook dishes capable of leaving the most refined, demanding palates spellbound.
The menu for each evening was to be prepared with the utmost care. The one for the 14th April, for example, displayed an extraordinary array of delights, including oyster with cava velouté and hollandaise sauce; poached salmon with mousseline sauce and caramelised cucumbers, filet mignon “Lilli” with potatoes, artichokes and foie-gras; and roast lamb leg with mint sauce. Overall, ten dishes that may not sound too impressive nowadays but which were prohibitive at the time to the vast majority of the passengers who were sleeping far away from the first-class cabins.
The Titanic's culinary splendour has now come alive again at the Westin Palace hotel's La Rotonda restaurant, where customers have a chance to relish a ten-dish tasting menu, just like the one that was served at the Titanic's first-class à la carte restaurant that ominous night of the 14th April, 1912. “Our kitchen team has done research on the recipes of that era, including those by Escoffier, in order to achieve the highest possible degree of authenticity”, said Pilar Mantara, director of the Palace's gastronomy department, during the presentation of the menu. The Titanic dinner will be offered from April 1st to April 19th at a price of 50 euros (visit www.westinpalacemadrid.com for bookings).
“Eating pigeon, salmon or scallops is no big deal today but it certainly was then”. The menu includes two dishes to choose from, either filet mignon “Lilli” and sautéed chicken à la lyonnaise or lamb leg in mint sauce and roast duckling in apple sauce or roast beef with chateau potatoes, all served on Limoges china and silver cutlery.
This gastronomic rendering is offered parallel to the museum display Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition (5 Goya Street) which showcases 230 pieces, recovered from the bottom of the ocean by RMS Titanic Incorporated. “The most important aspect of the shipwreck was the passengers' personal stories and nothing narrates them better than their belongings”, said Cheryl Muré, the company's director of education last November, during the inauguration of the exhibit.
Perhaps it is possible thus to imagine what millionaire property developer John Jacob Aston IV, industrialist Benjamin Guggeneim or the exceedingly rich young Madrileños Víctor Peñasco y Castellana and María Josefa Pérez de Soto y Vallejo (the only survivor of them all) savoured that night.
Unfortunately, a short while after tasting such delicacies, a huge chunk of ice damaged the hull of the unsinkable Titanic. In less than three hours, the great prodigy of luxury and technology (which would leave more than 1,500 casualties) lay at 12,500 feet deep, at the bottom of the Atlantic.

I hold a Master's degree in TESOL and Translation Studies by Aston University in Birmingham, UK. I have worked for leading UK translation agency thebigword and have also been a trilingual customer service representative at US Airways' European headquarters.
As a writer, I have published a few bits and bobs in Spanish and British Fantasy zines. In my early twenties my first novel, "En tierra cruenta" was shortlisted in one of the most prestigious Spanish Fantasy and Sci-Fi prizes of the time: Premio Minotauro. The novel was published a year later by Minotauro / Planeta.
Last year, I drafted a comedy script that ended up in the 25-script longlist of BAFTA Rocliffe's New Comedy Writing Competition, out of more than 400 entries. Recently, I have used my writing skills to collaborate in study guides for the College Board's AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam and to create copy for an online campaign.
