Les termes gâtine ou gastine (avec l'ancienne graphie) sont à l'origine des noms des anciennes provinces françaises du Gâtinois et du Gâtinais. Il désigne au sens le plus ancien un « terrain inculte, inhabité », mais aussi « le pillage, la ruine »1. Ils partagent le même radical que les termes gâter et l'ancien français gast « désert, inculte ».
