éléments de marouflage

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Fabrication in a patent

Discussion

chris collister Jun 7, 2021:
@ Jean You may disagree if you wish. But it is not clear at all that these "éléments" are "some sort of reinforcing tape" nor that they "could not possibly be related to any tool or procedure". In a former life I was involved with the construction of composite structures, including CFRP, so I know how the process works. It requires a lot of rollering, squeegeeing, and occasionally, adding extra matting which may, or may not, be in the form of a tape. Take a look at a YouTube video to see how it's done.
Jean Lachaud Jun 7, 2021:
Disagree Maroufler simply means "bond fabric to a substrate," as attested by the definition in the Petit Larousse. No reference to any of the techniques involved to that effect.

In addition, the text mentions "éléments de marouflage", which could not possibly be related to any tool or procedure.

It is clear that such "éléments" are some sort of reinforcing tape (or other pieces of fibres) applied over the main fabric.

When fibreglass (or carbon fibre) is laid up by hand, a liquid resin has to be worked in among the fibres so that there are no air pockets or voids. There is than an excess of resin, which has to be squeezed out (marouflé) one way or another. The manual way is to use brushes, rollers or squeegees, but vacuum bags (making use of atmospheric air pressure) are used at larger scale (e.g wind turbine blades).
There are plenty of hits on GRP or CRP (glass/carbon reinforced plastic) layup and techniques.

debulking elements

Hello, this is what i found:

"Resin is applied to the dry plies after layup is complete (e.g., by means of resin infusion). In a variation known as wet layup, each ply is coated with resin and debulked (compacted) after it is placed. Although debulk can be done by hand with rollers, most fabricators today use a vacuum-bagging technique that involves placing plastic sheet materials over the layup, sealing it at the tool’s edges, adding one or more ports for air hoses and then evacuating air from the space between the sheet and the layup using a vacuum pump). Debulking not only consolidates the layup but also removes air trapped in the resin matrix that would otherwise create undesirable voids (air pockets) in the laminate that could weaken the composite."

"In a process for forming a fiber reinforced composite structure from an uncured composite subassembly of fiber ply material and a resin, the improvement comprising the step of:
(a) debulking said composite assembly by applying a combination of a negative pressure on one part of said composite assembly and a positive pressure on another part thereof to thereby remove voids from within said composite assembly prior to curing same."
Composite article debulking process : https://patents.google.com/patent/US20080210372A1/en

"Hot debulking is a process where multiple layers of composite cloth/resin materials are assembled together into a layup and a vacuum is applied to remove unwanted air and voids within the layup. A variety of BriskHeat heater options can be used to elevate the temperature of the layup to approximately 120°F (49°C). Heat allows the materials to compress easier and limits the amount of voids in the layup to ensure a stronger, more reliable cure."

smoothing tools

In WordReference.com, the verb "maroufler" means to smooth out from the center toward the edges to remove air bubbles; by extension, I take it to mean in this text "a smoothing out of the various materials used in the manufacturing process.
