I love writing and see a good many advertisements for technical writing. Sadly, I lack the expertise in various Programmes / Packages that are mentioned in the advertisement.
Can anyone tell me what are in the minimum requirements for a technical writer in addtion to a mastery of the language.

Thank you very much
Sonia

Tech Writer Mar 5, 2004

Hi Sonia,

I would say a Tech Writer should:
- have a very good knowledge of IT in general;
- have specialized in one or several fields (i.e. databases);
- know what are the specific types of documentation needed on the market (user guides, administration manuals, help, etc.);
- have experience with the tools used on a daily basis by Tech Writers (i.e. RoboHelp, HTMLHelp etc)

A good starting point

Hi Sonia,

I would say a Tech Writer should:

- have experience with the tools used on a daily basis by Tech Writers (i.e. RoboHelp, HTMLHelp etc)

A good starting point would be, in my opinion, www.raycomm.com/techwhirl/ - the TECHWR-L discussion list.

From my experience, technical writing should be a rewarding job in a fast-growing IT country.

Best regards from Bucharest,

There is a great book on technical writing. Mar 5, 2004

Check out How to Write Usable User Documentation by Edmund Weiss. It's a tech writer's bible, at least on the writing aspect of tech writing.

technical writing Mar 5, 2004

Most universities have courses in technical writing. I graduated from WWU in technical writing many years ago. There is more to become a technical writer than "just" writing correct sentence structures, etc. I recommend you contact a University about technical writing classes. You might be able to do it on line.
