El gobierno de Ehud Olmert hizo oír más de una voz respecto de las posibilidades de descongelar las negociaciones con Damasco. Y, cabe destacarlo, no se trata de acordes complementarios, sino contradictorios. El primero en mencionar la necesidad de reanudar el diálogo con Siria, inmediatamente después del establecimiento del cese de fuego en el Líbano, fue Amir Peretz, el ministro de Defensa. Pero tras la ola de críticas que despertó, incluso en su propio partido, se retractó y aclaró que “las condiciones aún no están maduras”. There have been several voices heard within Ehud Olmert’s government with regard to the possibilities of re-opening negotiations with Damascus. Far from being harmonious, however, they have been rather discordant. The first to mention the need to resume dialogue with Syria, immediately following the establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon, was Defence Minister Amir Peretz. However, as a result of the wave of criticism that this aroused, even within his own party, he retracted, stating that “conditions were not yet ripe”. Avi Dichter, Internal Security Minister and former head of Shabak, then declared himself in favour of the withdrawal of Israel from the Golan Heights in exchange for “true peace” with Syria. In contrast to Labour Party leader Peretz, Dichter’s allegiance is to the very heart of Olmert’s party, Kadima, and therefore it was for this reason that the premier spoke out against his minister’s declaration as soon as he became aware of it. “There are those”, he said, “who say we should welcome Bashar Assad with open arms. I state clearly: Let us not forget the thousands of missiles which fell on this soil last month. All of them came via Damascus.”
As long as Hezbollah and Hamas continue to be supported both militarily and politically by Syria, there remains no-one with whom Israel can enter into serious discussions. Such is, in spite of some dissonant spokespersons, Israel’s official position. In this sense, the only thing that has changed since the war with Lebanon is that the principal, and almost sole, core policy of the governing party, namely the unilateral partial withdrawal of Israel from the West Bank, has been shelved in the face of the public’s dissatisfaction with both the handling of, and the miserable failure of, the military conflict with Hezbollah. With his popularity in the opinion polls at less than 40%, Olmert has confined the governmental agenda almost exclusively to the reconstruction of the north of Israel, which suffered attacks of around 4,000 rockets in one month. There can be no doubt that he is facing the battle for political survival head on.
