I am an accredited NAATI Translator (Australian National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). I have a PhD/Doctorate in Creative Arts (Writing) from University of Technology, Sydney. I'm also a writer and I have been working now translating, subtitling or intertitling (for silent features) short or long movies and documentaries from French to English for the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisbane, Australia. I also do the live subtitling from the projection booth while the movie are screening, as these movies are usually 16mm originals shown in the GoMA two theaters without subtitles on the films.

I usually work from home, from an original DVD, or DVD copy, or a telecine. Sometimes the people at GoMA receive the movies on reels and realize they are not subtitled in English, and if there is no DVD of that movie available they just film the movie while they are screening it. They transfer the copy on DVD and leave it with me.

So my final translations are not just a text file but a final formatted product, with the lines matching what the actors say. I usually provide my final translation on a Powerpoint file but I could do it on a different format as I am very computer literate and can use as well some subtitling software.

It’s a job I really enjoy doing and I’m looking to do more.
