In the first half of 2005, the increase by EUR 7.4 million in the net results of the Bank confirms the tendency of the first quarter. If we exclude extraordinary items, which are related to the effect IAS had on a capital gain, which derived from the sale of portfolio titles, amounting EUR 4.7 million, the results for the first half of 2005 would amounted to EUR 2.7 million (EUR 1.6 million for the second quarter versus EUR 1.1 million in the first quarter).
This result was achieved within the framework of important reorganizations, which will continue until the end of the current fiscal year and are expressed in the implementation of the following restructuring plan, which, inter alia, includes:
• The opening of four (4) additional branches, bringing the total number of the bank’s network to 116 on 30/06/2005, while 19 more are under construction, with the objective to open and operate 42 additional branches in two years and a half.
• The concentration of activities to the core business of the bank, either through the transfer or closing of non-strategic subsidiaries and the repurchase of the corporate activities of the company SG Hellas.
• The implementation of robust supervisory mechanisms of risks and adjustment of IT applications, aiming at reinforcing security (rating of corporate credits, organization and set-up of a back-up system, improvement of communication and reporting systems, complete evaluation of credits’ portfolio, strengthening of market and operational risk supervision).
• The commercial re-organization of the network.
• The application of a new corporate identity to 50% of the branch network and improvement of the information material distributed to clients.
• The development of new innovative products in the market, among which, “tunnel” mortgage loans, which are highly appreciated by clients.
• The implementation of an in-depth training program for the personnel.
• At the same time, with the support of Societe Generale Group, the bank followed regulatory developments, by adopting International Accounting Standards (IAS), starting January 1, 2005, for the presentation of its financial statements and currently prepares the next set of changes of prudential rules, in accordance with the provisions stipulated in Basle II.
Finally, the share capital increase, which was approved by shareholders during the General Meeting of May 12, 2005, was successfully realized, as 97% of the rights were exercised by the old shareholders and Societe Generale has secured and kept its promise to cover the remaining percentage, by bringing its contribution to 52.3%. These additional funds offer to the bank the means to put into force its developmental program.
The total of clients’ deposits (except Repos) reached EUR 2.4 billion on 30/06/2005 against EUR 2 billion on 31/12/2004. This substantial increase (+ 21%) partly presents tax changes, which have reduced the popularity of Repos, leading certain clients to transfer their money to time deposits.
Also, pre-tax profits increased by 10.7m euros in H12005 compared to a loss of 64.5m euros in H12004. Thus, after-tax profits reached 7.4m euros.

Η αύξηση κατά Ευρώ 7,4 εκατ. που σημειώθηκε στα καθαρά αποτελέσματα της Τράπεζας το α’ εξάμηνο του 2005, επιβεβαιώνει την τάση του α’ τριμήνου. Αν εξαιρεθούν, έκτακτα στοιχεία που συνδέονται στον αντίκτυπο των ΔΛΠ σε μία υπεραξία που προέκυψε από την πώληση τίτλων χαρτοφυλακίου, η οποία ανέρχεται στα Ευρώ 4,7 εκατ., τα αποτελέσματα για το α’ εξάμηνο του 2005 θα ανέρχονταν στα Ευρώ 2,7 εκατ. (Ευρώ 1,6 εκατ. για το β’ τρίμηνο έναντι Ευρώ 1,1 εκατ. το α’τρίμηνο).
Το αποτέλεσμα αυτό επιτεύχθηκε μέσα σε ένα πλαίσιο σημαντικών αναδιοργανώσεων, οι οποίες θα συνεχιστούν μέχρι το τέλος της τρέχουσας οικονομικής χρήσης 2005 και που εκφράζονται στην εφαρμογή του παρακάτω αναγγελθέντος προγράμματος αναδιάρθρωσης, το οποίο, μεταξύ άλλων, περιλαμβάνει:
• Την λειτουργία τεσσάρων (4) πρόσθετων καταστημάτων, με την οποία ο συνολικός αριθμός αυτών ανέρχονταν στα 116 στις 30 Ιουνίου του 2005, ενώ 19 άλλα βρίσκονται υπό κατασκευή, με στόχο τη λειτουργία 42 καταστημάτων σε δυόμισι χρόνια.

• Την εφαρμογή εύρωστων μηχανισμών εποπτείας των κινδύνων και προσαρμογή των πληροφοριακών συστημάτων, με στόχο να ενισχύσουν την ασφάλεια (αξιολόγηση των εταιρικών πιστώσεων, οργάνωση- τοποθέτηση ενός εφεδρικού συστήματος (back-up), βελτίωση των συστημάτων επικοινωνίας και δημοσιοποίησης στοιχείων, πλήρης αναθεώρηση του χαρτοφυλακίου πιστώσεων, ενίσχυση της επιτήρησης της αγοράς και λειτουργικών κινδύνων).
• Την εμπορική αναδιοργάνωση του δικτύου.
• Την εφαρμογή της νέας εταιρικής ταυτότητας στο 50% του δικτύου και τη βελτίωση των εντύπων που διατίθενται στους πελάτες.
• Την ανάπτυξη νέων προϊόντων, μεταξύ των οποίων, τα στεγαστικά δάνεια τύπου «tunnel», τα οποία είναι καινοτόμα στην αγορά και που εκτιμώνται ιδιαίτερα από τους πελάτες.
• Την υλοποίηση ενός σημαντικού προγράμματος εκπαίδευσης του προσωπικού.
Ταυτόχρονα, με την υποστήριξη του Ομίλου Societe Generale, η τράπεζα ακολούθησε τις κανονιστικές εξελίξεις, υιοθετώντας τα Διεθνή Λογιστικά Πρότυπα από την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2005 για την παρουσίαση των οικονομικών καταστάσεών της και προετοιμάζει τώρα την επόμενη αλλαγή των εποπτικών κανόνων, σύμφωνα με τις διατάξεις του Συμφώνου της Βασιλείας ΙΙ.

Thanks to the government inspection and registration system, which now applies to most forms of childcare, the search for high quality childcare has become easier. Now, more help is on its way with the arrival of online inspection reports for childminders, who look after children in their own home.
For the first time, Ofsted is publishing the inspection reports on childminders online. Whilst childminders have been inspected since the care standards applying to early years settings were introduced, the publication of these reports on the internet has been a more controversial issue for childminders than for day nurseries and pre-schools.
The reason behind this is the protection of the childminders' privacy. When Ofsted announced its intention of publishing reports with the names and addresses of childminders, the move was strongly opposed by the National Childminding Association on behalf of its 45,000 members. They believed that not only was their own personal privacy being unreasonably invaded, but that the safety of the children they cared for might also be put at risk.
After a joint consultation with all registered childminders, there was overwhelming support for keeping names and addresses off the internet.
The result is that the names and addresses of individual childminders are not included in the reports. Instead, a reference number identifies the childminder, and interested parents can find out more through their local Children's Information Service (find your local service through www.childcarelink.gov.uk), which supplies parents with advice and help with all aspects of childcare and early years information.
Childminders are inspected every three years and the inspection takes into account factors such as health and safety, suitability of setting and the skills of the childminder. Like any other childcare provider, the childminder must meet minimum standards in order to remain registered. The inspections use a checklist of national standards against which to make their judgements.
Childminding is a popular form of childcare, being the most used option after family care. One of the reasons parents choose it is that their children remain in a home setting. This has particular appeal for the parents of young babies. Another advantage of using a childminder is that siblings can be cared for in the same place.

Μαζί τους μπλέκονται ο "Γέρος", η "Γριά" και η "Αρκούδα". Στις αποκριάτικες εκδηλώσεις των "Κουδουνάτων" μπορεί κανείς να δει το "γάμο της νύφης", το "θάνατο", την "ανάσταση του νεκρού" και το "όργωμα".Την Καθαρή Δευτέρα στις κοινότητες Ποταμιά, Καλόξιδο, Λειβάδια κλπ. οι κάτοικοι ντύνονται "Κορδελάτοι" ή "Λεβέντες" γιατί στο φέσι και στους ώμους έχουν κορδέλες.Οι Κορδελάτοι είναι φουστανελοφόροι και η δεύτερη ονομασία τους "Λεβέντες" αποδίδεται στους Πειρατές. They wear cloaks and hoods and go around the village making noise and speaking and behaving in a provocative way. They also hold a piece of wood called "somba", which is paralleled with the Dionysian phallus. The group is joined by other Carnival figures such as the “Yeros"(old man), the "Gria"(old lady) and the Bear. Among the festivities organized by the "Koudounati" one can also see the "Bride’s wedding", "Death", the "Resurrection of the Dead" and the "Ploughing". On Ash Monday, in the communities called Potamia, Kaloxido, Livadia, etc. the locals are dressed up as the "Kordelati" or "Leventes", called so because they wear ribbons on fez and shoulders. The Kordelati wear the foustanela, the traditional Greek kilt, whilst their nick-name "Leventes" is attributed to Pirates. They are followed by the “robbers”, the "Spararatori", who grab the girls forcing them to join in the dancing and celebrations, which last until dawn.
