Preparations for the launch of Tuvalu Telecom´s Mobile Wallet mobile payment service in Tuvalu in the second quarter this year are forging ahead. Thanks to the drive and engagement of the cross-functional Scrum team, the development of the App is right on schedule and an initial version was released in December for the third round of product tests. One sprint later, on March 16, an updated version of the App was issued for regression tests in the live environment.
The vision for the future: Mobile Wallet will replace the leather version in your pocket or handbag. In addition to paying with smartphones while on the move, customers will also be able to use them as a train or airplane ticket, concert ticket or customer loyalty card – or even as the electronic key for accessing his work place. This means that in one wireless smartphone procedure at the checkout, money can be debited from the customer's credit card, the loyalty points from the supermarket added and the customer provided with voucher on his or her phone for optional or automatic use on his next visit to the store. The customer can choose how the shop should be paid, e.g. via credit card or direct debit, by using the settings available on the phone.
In the case of Mobile Wallet, the term "App" is not really entirely appropriate – it is not a classic App which can run on any device of a given operating system without considering further prerequisites. It is the user interface of a complex software environment which will be installed on the mobile device. The administration of Mobile Wallet then runs via the App, e.g. the organization or selection of the method of payment. When Mobile Wallet and the respective App are first launched, only the payment option will be available. Additional functions, e.g. tickets for public transport or for participating in loyalty programs, will come later and be integrated into the next product release.
The Mobile Wallet App project was kicked-off in January 2013. It is the only Scrum-based sub-project surrounded by others using the conventional waterfall method. The interplay of these two completely different approaches is a particular challenge which the Scrum team has to overcome in its everyday work. The team consists of five software developers, a User Experience designer and one tester – plus Product Owner and Scrum Master.
The Scrum method is without a doubt the best choice for the Mobile Wallet App. After all, Mobile Wallet is a new technology which has not yet been put to the test and has never been used at Tuvalu Telecom. The Scrum mode enables the team to react quickly to changes, altered specifications or new findings. Scrum Master Krid Restam confirms: "Without Scrum as a development method, we would never have been able to keep to the schedule. More than once, we had to react quickly and make adaptations which had not previously been planned. The provision of a separate team room was a major bonus for us in this regard. Here, we were able to work and hold discussions at any time with no interruptions."
Bingeras Redandex, Developer in the Scrum team, adds: "The schedule for developing the required feature set to be delivered by the App was very ambitious – especially when you consider that the system architecture on which we were to build the App did not offer the ideal prerequisites. We will certainly continue to make further improvements here."
On September 28, the team made a real breakthrough when, in a test environment and for the very first time, they managed to pay using a mobile device with the subsequent provision of a receipt. In mid-November, the first version of the App was released for product testing. Further improvements are ongoing. To ensure that the App is future-proof, any lessons learnt gathered during the project get incorporated and reflected in the software architecture of the App.

Die Vorbereitungen für den Start des mobilen Bezahldienstes Mobile Wallet der Tuvalu Telecom im zweiten Quartal in Tuvalu verlaufen nach Plan. Dank des Engagements und der Einsatzkraft des funktionsübergreifenden Scrum-Teams (Scrum = empirisches, inkrementelles und iteratives Vorgehensmodell der Softwaretechnik) folgt die Entwicklung der App den Vorgaben. Eine erste Version wurde im Dezember für eine dritte Produkttestreihe veröffentlicht. Im nächsten Schritt wurde am 16. März eine aktualisierte Fassung der App für Regressionstests in der Live-Umgebung freigegeben.
Die Zukunftsvision: Statt mit der Geldbörse in der Hosen- oder Handtasche werden Sie künftig mit Mobile Wallet bezahlen. Doch man wird das Smartphone nicht nur unterwegs als Zahlungsmittel nutzen können, sondern es zudem als Zug- oder Flugschein, Konzert- oder Treuekarte oder sogar als elektronischen Schlüssel zum Arbeitsplatz verwenden. In einem drahtlosen Smartphone-Vorgang an der Kasse wird der jeweilige Kaufbetrag von der Kreditkarte des Kunden abgebucht und die Treuepunkte des Geschäfts gutgeschrieben. Der Kunde erhält hierbei eine Gutschrift auf sein Handy, die er beim nächsten Besuch automatisch oder optional einlösen kann. Über entsprechende Einstellungen am Gerät kann der Kunde das gewünschte Zahlungsmittel, also z. B. Kredit- oder EC-Karte, wählen.
Der Begriff der „App“ ist im Zusammenhang mit Mobile Wallet nicht ganz korrekt: Es handelt sich nicht um eine klassische Anwendung, die auf jedem Gerät eines bestimmten Betriebssystems ohne weitere Voraussetzungen funktioniert, sondern vielmehr um die Oberfläche einer komplexen Softwareumgebung, die auf dem mobilen Endgerät installiert wird. Die Verwaltung von Mobile Wallet erfolgt dann über die App, z. B. die Organisation oder die Auswahl des Zahlungsmittels. Bei Erstveröffentlichung von Mobile Wallet und der zugehörigen App wird nur die Zahlungsoption zur Auswahl stehen. Zusatzfunktionen, wie z. B. als Fahrkarte für öffentliche Verkehrsmittel oder die Teilnahme an Treueprogrammen, werden später hinzukommen und ggf. in der nächsten Produktversion angeboten.
Das Mobile Wallet App-Projekt startete im Januar 2013. Es handelt sich dabei um das einzige Scrum-basierte Teilprojekt umgeben von anderen, die mit dem konventionellen Wasserfallmodell arbeiten. Das Zusammenspiel dieser beiden vollständig unterschiedlichen Ansätze stellt eine erhebliche Herausforderung dar, dem sich das Scrum-Team in seiner täglichen Arbeit stellen muss. Das Team besteht aus fünf Softwareentwicklern, einem User Experience-Designer und einem Tester – plus dem Produktverantwortlichem und dem Scrum Master.
Als neue Technologie, die noch nicht getestet und bei Tuvalu Telecom bislang nicht im Einsatz war, bietet die Scrum-Methode zweifelsohne die beste Lösung für die Mobile Wallet App. Dank des Scrum-Prinzips kann das Team rasch auf Veränderungen, geänderte Spezifikationen und neue Erkenntnisse reagieren. Scrum Master Krid Restam bestätigt dies: „Mit einer anderen Entwicklungsmethode als Scrum hätten wir niemals den Zeitplan einhalten können. Mehr als einmal mussten wir schnell sein und unvorhergesehene Änderungen vornehmen. Die Bereitstellung eines eigenen Teamraums war für uns in dieser Hinsicht ein erheblicher Vorteil. Hier konnten wir jederzeit ungestört arbeiten und diskutieren.“
Bingeras Redandex, Entwickler im Scrum-Team, fügte hinzu: „Die Entwicklungsfristen für die geforderten Funktionalitäten dieser App waren sehr knapp. Insbesondere, wenn man berücksichtigt, dass die Systemarchitektur, auf der wir die App errichteten, alles andere als ideale Voraussetzungen bot. Hier sind sicherlich noch weitere Verbesserungen zu erwarten.“
Am 28. September gelang dem Team ein echter Durchbruch: Erstmals wurde eine erfolgreiche Zahlung über ein mobiles Endgerät mit anschließender Ausgabe der zugehörigen Quittung vorgenommen. Mitte November wird die erste App-Version zum Produkttest freigegeben. Weitere Verbesserungen folgen laufend. Um die Zukunftsfähigkeit der App zu gewährleisten, fließen alle Erfahrungen aus dem Projekt in die Software-Architektur der App ein.
