Texte source - anglais This is me, Robert, talking now. Much as I’d like to tell you that I was tearfully shocked and distraught about effectively the split-up of my favourite band, the truth is it came only as a slight surprise; it had seemed inevitable for some time. And much as they were ‘my’ band, much as I regarded them almost as friends, and much as I could argue the quality of their music over any other band going, I felt their output had been waning for a while.
And I was tired of ‘having’ to buy numerous versions and formats of singles that I could barely afford and wasn’t massively keen on in the first fucking place.
Unless you were in the ‘inner circle’ of The Stranglers, if indeed there actually was such a thing, then those were the days of slow and ‘foggy’ communications (and I was oop North remember, where southerners believed cars were powered by coal and there was no such thing as colour television) so much of the news and gossip remained secret. Of course, it hurt when Hugh left, but I was quite sure it would be temporary and there was a way back wasn’t there?
This unfortunate situation was like splitting up with a girlfriend who you didn’t really love anymore, where ‘I love you but I’m not IN love with you’ sort of drivel is the overriding feeling.
However, back in 1990 I was 25 years old and emotionally immature (still am probably) full of mixed up feelings and not quite sensible opinions (yes, still am probably), so Hugh deserting The Stranglers didn’t have that much of an impact on me then as it did in later years. (Maybe there I should say does in later years).
I mean, why couldn’t they just have a temporary break from each other? Why not announce that the split was ‘indefinite’ and so wasn’t absolutely final? Why not declare that all the teddies and rattles thrown from the respective Cornwell and Burnel prams were in fact retrievable?
Someone, maybe the elder statesman Jet Black, should have arranged a meeting with Hugh and JJ and told them in no uncertain terms to sort their selves out, to settle their differences and to not let personality clashes ruin their friendship and working partnership.
And to GROW UP for fuck’s sake instead of hurting each other and their friends & colleagues and the fans too, the fans who, let’s face it, had a great deal of influence in helping them realise their quest for fame and fortune.
The Stranglers are still going, they are still capable of brilliant new music and they are still one of the best bands in concert you could hope to see. And they are always different and original.
Hugh Cornwell also has many moments of brilliance, and he too nearly always provides fantastic gigs for his faithful fans. Many of those faithful fans still follow The Stranglers too.
Is it possible that the four original members will meet up again, in happy circumstances?
Is it possible that somehow Hugh could work with Jean-Jacques again, with the approval of Baz Warne don’t forget, as he is a superb front man and vital to the existence of the band.
Yes of course it is possible. Of fucking course it is! I doubt it’s plausible though but I would be delighted to be proven wrong.
Traduction - français C’est moi, Robert, qui parle à présent. J’aimerais vous dire que j’ai été choqué aux larmes, bouleversé par le split de mon groupe préféré. Mais en vérité, je n’ai pas été surpris ; ce qui semblait inévitable depuis quelque temps arriva. Et ils avaient beau être « mon » groupe, j’avais beau les considérer pour ainsi dire comme des amis, et même si j’étais capable de défendre leur musique face à n’importe quel autre groupe de l’époque, au fond de moi je sentais que leur créativité déclinait depuis un bail. Et j’en avais marre de « devoir » acheter plusieurs versions et formats de singles que je pouvais tout juste m’offrir et qui de toutes façons ne me passionnaient pas plus que ça, putain.
À cette époque où la communication était lente et « floue », à moins de faire partie du « cercle intime » des Stranglers, si effectivement une telle chose existait, une bonne partie des nouvelles et autres ragots restaient secrets (et souvenez-vous, je vivais dans le Nord, où, pour les gens du Sud, les voitures fonctionnaient au charbon et nous n’avions pas la télé en couleur). Bien sûr, le départ de Hugh a fait mal, mais je restais persuadé que ce serait temporaire, qu’on pourrait revenir en arrière. Non ? Cette triste situation faisait l’effet d’une séparation avec une petite-amie que l’on aime plus vraiment, comme lorsque prédominent des inepties du genre « je t’aime, mais je ne suis pas AMOUREUX de toi ».
Toutefois, en 1990 j’avais 25 ans. J’étais immature sur le plan émotionnel (toujours le cas, probablement), complètement paumé et pas vraiment raisonnable (oui, toujours le cas probablement), et à l’époque, le fait que Hugh déserte les Stranglers ne m’a pas impacté tant que ça. Cet impact, je devais le ressentir des années plus tard. (Ou plutôt, je le RESSENS des années plus tard). Franchement, ne pouvaient-ils pas faire une pause, arrêter de se voir temporairement ? Pourquoi ne pas avoir annoncé qu’il s’agissait d’un split « indéfini », rien de définitif ? Pourquoi ne pas avoir déclaré que les caprices, les enfantillages entre Cornwell et Burnel étaient rattrapables, que leur jouet n’était pas cassé ?
Quelqu’un, pourquoi pas le taulier, le doyen, Jet Black, aurait dû organiser une réunion avec Hugh et JJ, pour leur dire sans prendre de gants de faire le point, de régler leurs différends et de ne pas laisser leurs ego détruire leur amitié ainsi que leur collaboration. Et surtout, de GRANDIR bordel, au lieu de se faire du mal, et de blesser leurs amis, leurs collègues et les fans. Les fans qui, entre nous, ont joué un rôle déterminant dans leur accession vers la gloire et le succès.
Les Stranglers existent toujours. Ils sont toujours capables de produire d’excellents albums, et restent à ce jour l’un des meilleurs groupes que vous pourriez espérer voir sur scène. Ce groupe est toujours différent et original. Hugh Cornwell aussi connaît de nombreux moments d’excellence, et lui aussi donne presque toujours des concerts fantastiques pour ses fans fidèles.
Nombre de ces fans fidèles suivent toujours les Stranglers.
Est-il possible que les quatre membres originaux se réunissent, en d’heureuses circonstances?
Est-il possible, d’une façon ou d’une autre, que Hugh et Jean-Jacques puissent travailler ensemble à nouveau, avec l’accord de Baz Warne ? N’oublions pas ce dernier, ce superbe frontman, essentiel à l’existence du groupe. Oui, bien sûr, c’est possible. Bordel, bien sûr que c’est possible ! Par contre je doute que ce soit plausible, mais je serais ravi qu’on me prouve le contraire.
