This is therefore not a book about Africa, but rather about some people from there—about encounters with them, and time spent together. The continent is too large to describe. It is a veritable ocean, a separate planet, a varied, immensely rich cosmos. Only with the greatest simplification, for the sake of convenience, can we say “Africa.” In reality, except as a geographical appellation, Africa does not exist.

Lorsque je me suis réveillé, le jour c’était déjà enfui. J’ai attendu monsieur Ibrahim jusqu’à minuit. J’ai marché jusqu’au village suivant. Quand je suis arrivé sur sa place, les gens se sont précipités sur moi. Je ne comprenais pas leur langue, mais eux me parlaient avec animation, et ils semblaient très bien me connaître.
Il était étendu, couvert de plaies, de bleus, de sang. La voiture s’était plantée contre un mur.
Il avait l’air tout faible.
Je me suis jeté sur lui. Il a rouvert les yeux et sourir.
- Momo, le voyage s’arrête là.
- Mais non, on n’y est pas arrivées a votre mer de naissance.
- Si, moi j’y arrive. Toutes les branches du fleuve se jettent dans la même mer. La mer unique.
Là, ça s’est fait malgré moi, je me suis mis à pleurer.
- Momo, je ne suis pas content.
- J’ai peur pour vous, monsieur Ibrahim.

Les heures où nous tournions au tekké, il appelait ça la danse de l’alchimie, la danse qui transforme le cuivre en or. Il citait souvent Rumi.

Biomarker selection
All of the studies shown in Table 1 employed 13C-based SIP; therefore, all had a shared goal of deciphering the complexity of naturally occurring microbial populations and identifying community members that assimilated the substrate-delivered 13C atoms into biomass. Aside from this commonality, the studies exhibit many variations that reflect the combined idiosyncracies of project aims and investigator expertise. For example, the accepted taxonomically informative biomarkers used in environmental microbiology are DNA, RNA and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA); all three of these are represented in the studies and each has its strengths and weaknesses [2,3,7–9]. DNA- and RNA-SIP are usually aimed at discovering 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences, hence taxa. Relative to taxonomic insights from PLFA assays, the 16S rRNA gene database is robust and offers strong capabilities for resolving close relatives. Some SIP practitioners favor RNA (rRNA reverse transcribed into cDNA sequences) because RNA synthesis can be rapid and is hence indicative of active populations. In addition, labeling can occur without the need for DNA synthesis and replication [10,11]. The study by Manefield et al. [10] was the first to apply denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)-based community fingerprinting to 13C-separated rRNA; transfer of the 13C label from one population to another was demonstrated.

This is a very important criterion and does not always correlate with the outcomes score from other criteria. Patients with a positive attitude towards their RPDs could function satisfactorily even though their RPDs were poorly designed; whereas patients who have a poor attitude toward their RPDs may not be satisfied even with excellent or acceptable RPDs. Thus, although the other criteria are important, patient acceptance is an absolutely critical. Stability of the prosthesis was determined by the amount of movement observed when moderate unilateral apically directed pressure was applied on the occlusal surface of the RPD. This movement was recorded in millimetres. Likewise, with Kennedy Class IV RPDs, the moderate apically directed pressure was applied to the incisal surface of the replacement teeth of the RPD and any movement observed was recorded. Support for the prosthesis was evaluated by applying bilateral vertical pressure apically and determining the resistance to displace-ment towards the tissues. Retention was assessed by determining the force required to vertically displace and remove the RPD away from the alveolar ridge. The assessors would remove the RPD using both hands by applying bilateral force directed coronally along the path of insertion of the prosthesis. The adaptation of RPD components, such as major connectors, minor connectors, direct and indirect retainers, and the denture base were determined visually and by an explorer and probing instrument.
