Le Concept
Le SNOB a été pensé comme une maison bourgeoise pour rendre hommage à la Parisienne.
Cette Snobinarde complexe mais sympathique est autant « Eternelle Vacancière » que « Chic et décontractée ».
Des luminaires en laiton gigantesques que l’on imagine avoir coiffé la façade d’une maison d’été, un desk d’accueil traité comme un meuble de famille, le tout dans une ambiance très chaude, sombre et végétalisée.
Le thème de la végétation est très présent dans l’hôtel, car la parisienne est souvent en mal d’authenticité. Elle se réfugie vers une valeur universelle : la nature… comme l’illustre le papier peint panoramique du rez-de-chaussée.

Our Concept
The SNOB was conceived as a bourgeois abode, created in essence, to pay homage to the Parisienne lady.
This complex yet charming ideal of snobbery represents the Parisienne's 'Eternal holidaymaker' spirit as much as her 'Chic and chilled' demeanour.
Enormous brass lamps which you can picture adorning the front of a summer holiday home, a reception desk which evokes an antique family heirloom, all within a warm, mellow atmosphere, enriched with lush greenery.
The theme of greenery is very present in the hotel, symbolising the Parisienne's desire for a touch of authenticity, which she so often lacks. She thus flees towards a universal value: nature …as is perfectly illustrated by the ground floor's panoramic wallpaper.

OBJETIVO DEL CONVENIO
La Universidad de Alcalá y NOMBRE DE LA OTRA UNIVERSIDAD se comprometen a seleccionar cada año un estudiante para realizar un curso de Lengua y Cultura en la otra Universidad.
ALCANCE DEL CONVENIO
La Universidad de Alcalá ofrecerá cada año una beca a un estudiante de NOMBRE DE LA OTRA UNIVERSIDAD para que realice un curso de verano de lengua y cultura española en ALCALINGUA de una duración aproximada de un mes durante los meses de julio o agosto. La beca cubre el coste de la matrícula en el curso de verano y el alojamiento en la Residencia Universitaria CRUSA.(Deberá recogerse de forma expresa el importe al que como máximo podrá ascender la mima para todos los conceptos y la correspondiente aplicación presupuestaría.)
La NOMBRE DE LA OTRA UNIVERSIDAD ofrecerá cada año una beca a un estudiante de la Universidad de Alcalá para el curso de verano de CONTENIDO DEL CURSO de duración aproximada de un mes. La beca cubre el coste de la matrícula en el curso de verano y el alojamiento en XXXXX.
Cada universidad enviará a la oficina correspondiente los nombres del estudiante seleccionado para participar en este programa antes del día 30 de mayo de cada año.
La decisión final en lo relativo a la admisión de estudiantes corresponde a la institución de destino, que se reserva el derecho a denegar la admisión a cualquiera de los estudiantes propuestos para este Programa.

The University of Alcalá agrees to award a bursary every year to one student of the INSERT NAME OF UNIVERSITY which will permit them to participate in a summer Spanish language and culture course in ALCALINGUA for the approximate duration of a month over the months July and August. The bursary shall cover the cost of tuition fees for the summer course and accommodation in the University halls of residence ‘CRUSA’.
(The maximum amount to which said bursary may rise must be explicitly stated as well as all aspects of the exchange that it will cover and the budgetary distribution.)
The University of INSERT NAME OF UNIVERSITY agrees to award a bursary every year to one student of the University of Alcalá for the summer course INSERT COURSE CONTENTS for the approximate duration of a month. The bursary shall cover the cost of tuition fees for the summer course and accommodation in XXXX.
Each university agrees to send the name of the student selected to participate in this programme to the corresponding office before the 30th of May each year.

Hace tiempo que mi madre no me da la bronca por abusar del lenguaje soez en esta página, y
empiezo a preocuparme. O ella envejece y se acostumbra, o estoy perdiendo facultades y
volviéndome lingüísticamente correcto. Por fortuna, todavía llegan cartas de algún lector o
lectora inasequibles al desaliento, afeándome mi poca vergüenza. E incluso Nacho Iglesias, el
baranda de esta barraca, recibe periódicas sugerencias para que en El Semanal me echen a la
calle de una puta vez. La última es de un señor de Oviedo, por la letra jubilado y por el
membrete notario, que me afea el uso, e incluso el abuso, de la palabra cojones, e incluso
sugiere la posibilidad de que yo saque tanto a colación el asunto por algún trauma personal
relacionado con mi propia virilidad o, subraya el amable comunicante, mi ausencia de ella.
"A ver si es maricón", concluye, por si no he captado los circunloquios preliminares.
En fin. Al margen de que yo pueda resultar más o menos maricón, la antedicha carta me
viene al pelo para traerles a colación un impreso anónimo que hace tiempo circula por ahí –
algún lector ha tenido el detalle de mandármelo-, y que, bajo el título Riqueza del castellano,
enumera una exhaustiva relación de las diversas acepciones que en nuestra lengua, la de
Quevedo y Cervantes, tienen los atributos masculinos. Y me van a perdonar el notario de
Oviedo y mi madre, pero no me resisto a glosar el asunto y poner los cojones en su sitio.
Por ejemplo: según confirma con acierto singular el mencionado folleto, el sentido cojones
varía según el numeral que le acompaña. La unidad significa algo caro o costoso (eso vale un
cojón), dos pueden sugerir arrojo o valentía (con dos cojones), tres significa desprecio (me
importa tres cojones), y un número elevado suele apuntar dificultad extrema (conseguirlo me
costó veinte pares de cojones). Del mismo modo, basta un verbo para darle variedad a los
significados. Verbigracia: tener puede referirse a valentía (esa tía tiene cojones), pero también
censura, admiración o sorpresa (¡tiene cojones!); expresión que, en su variante ¡manda
huevos!, hizo recientemente popular, en sesión de las Cortes, mi paisano y compañero de
maristas Federico Trillo. Siguiendo con los verbos, acompañado de poner puede significar
reto o aplomo (puso los cojones encima de la mesa), y el verbo tocar implica molestia, hastío
o indiferencia (me toca los cojones), vagancia (se toca los cojones), e incluso desafío (anda y
tócame los cojones). El término es también acepción de lentitud (viene arrastrando los
cojones). Y, en cuanto a amenaza, su uso es frecuente (te voy a volar los cojones) e incluso se
recurre a ello para describir agresión física (fue y le pateó los cojones).
Los prefijos y sufijos también son importantes de cojones. Por ejemplo, a- significa miedo
(acojonado), des- implica regocijo (descojonarse), y -udo implica calidad o perfección
(cojonudo). También las preposiciones matizan lo suyo: se alude a éxito (nos fue de cojones)
o intensidad (hace un frío de cojones), hasta define ciertos límites (hasta los cojones) y se
alude a la intransigencia (por cojones). También se recurren a ellos como lugar de origen para
definir cierto tipo de actitudes intrínsecamente españolas y como origen de voluntad
inapelable (porque me sale de los cojones), sin que falten referencias cultas o históricas (tiene
los cojones como el caballo de Espartero).
Así que ya me dirá usted, señor notario. A ver cuando Shakespeare, o Joyce, o la madre que
los parió, en esa jerga onomatopéyica y septentrional que usaban los pastores para llamar a
las ovejas, y los piratas para repartirse el botín contando con los dedos, fueron capaces de
utilizar, con todo su Oxford, la palabra equivalente con tanta variedad, y tanta riqueza, y tanta

However, the fact I’m still getting mail from the occasional indefatigable reader, criticising me for my unabashedness, puts my mind somewhat at ease. Even the head honcho, Nacho Iglesias, receives periodical suggestions that the ‘El Semanal’ newspaper should just throw me out on my arse once and for all. The most recent of these was from a gentleman in Oviedo— a pensioner it would seem, judging by his handwriting and a public notary judging by the letterhead— which chastises me for my use, and misuse, of the word ‘cojones’1. He goes so far as to imply the possibility that my fixation with the word is due to some personal trauma related to my masculinity, or, as his friendly correspondence considerately underlines, lack thereof. “I bet he’s a poof”, he eloquently concludes, just in case I hadn’t managed to gather that earlier in his meandering discourse.
Anyway, at the risk of once more putting my potential ‘poofiness’ under scrutiny, I thought a fitting response to the aforementioned letter would be to present an anonymous manuscript which has been around for quite some time, that a reader has been thoughtful enough to send me. In a quest to highlight ‘The Richness of the Spanish Language’, it provides an extensive list of meanings of the frequently used word, which makes reference to a certain well known pair of ‘masculine’ attributes. I do hope my mother and the notary in Oviedo forgive me for this, but I can’t resist getting the cojones out and onto the judges table.
The document concisely highlights that the meaning of cojones in Spanish varies depending on which number it’s used with. Used with one, in the case of ‘eso vale un cojón’ (That’s worth a nut2), means that something is expensive. Two of them can be used as a reference to ballsiness or

bravery, like in the case of ‘con dos cojones’ (with two bollocks). Yet, by adding a third in the phrase ‘Me importa tres cojones’ (I couldn’t care three bollocks about that), we indicate that something is of little importance. Finally, as one could probably imagine, a high number implies extreme difficulty: ‘conseguirlo me costó veinte pares de cojones’ (achieving it cost me 20 pairs of balls).
Similarly, when used alongside a verb, the word is given distinct shades of meaning. For example, adding the verb ‘tener’ (to have) could indicate courage: ‘esa tía tiene cojones’ is equivalent to the English phrase ‘that girl’s got balls’. However, we can also use this combination as exclamation of disapproval, surprise, or admiration, depending on the tone and context. The variation of this expression: ‘manda huevos3’ has recently been popularised by an old catholic-schoolmate turned politician of mine, Federico Trillo, when he used it in parliament. Now, let us continue with verb combinations; we could challenge someone using the verb ‘poner’ (to put) by ‘poner los cojones encima de la mesa’ (putting ones nuts on the table), figuratively of course. One must also be careful (obvious reasons aside) when using ‘cojones’ with the verb ‘tocar’ (to touch). ‘Me toca los cojones’, which translates nicely into: ‘that gets on my balls’, can be used to imply irritation, boredom or indifference. To spend time ‘tocándose los cojones’ (touching one’s own bollocks), suggests laziness. Used imperatively: ‘anda y tócame los cojones’ (C’mon and touch my balls), again proposes a challenge. The term can also be used to illustrate slowness and hesitation, similarly to the English expression ‘to drag ones feet’; one could ‘arrastrar los cojones’. We can also create some menacing threats; a couple of popular examples are: ‘te voy a cortar los cojones’ (I’ll cut off your balls) or simply ‘te voy a patear los cojones’ (I’ll kick you in the bollocks). Other verbs may be added depending on the level of the threat.
As with many languages, Spanish uses prefixes and suffixes to diversify vocabulary; this is no different in the case of the word cojones. When someone is ‘acojonado’, they’re ‘bloody scared’,

but if they are ‘descojonándose’, they are ‘laughing their balls off’; and something or someone ‘cojonudo’ is ‘the bollocks’. Prepositions also help put things into context: de (meaning from, of, to or by) is often used alongside the word to intensify a situation either positively or negatively. The common phrase ‘de cojones’ can therefore be used in many diverse situations, from the weather: ‘hace un frío de cojones’, meaning something along the lines of ‘I’m freezing my balls off’, to a personal success: ‘me fue de cojones’ :‘It went bloody well’. If you ‘are up to your eyeballs’ in something, you could say that you are ‘hasta los cojones’ (which translates ‘almost’ literally) and if you would like to emphasise that you have no choice in a matter, adding ‘por cojones’ at the end a phrase will achieve this. There are many phrases using the term which exemplify quintessentially Spanish attitudes. If we wish to give an irrefutable order we may say ‘porque me sale de los cojones’ (because it comes from my balls); this conveys something akin to ‘because I said so’. Another reference which all Spaniards would be familiar with is ‘tiene los cojones como el caballo de Espartero’ (he’s got balls like the Espartero horse), referring to a monument in in Madrid with somewhat considerable attributes.
So, I would like to hear your answer to this Mr Notary: When was Shakespeare, Joyce, or any other goddamned celebrated writer, shepherds calling their sheep, or pirates, counting on their fingers to divide up treasure, in their elaborate and onomatopoeic jargon…When were they, with their vast vocabularies, ever able to use such a word with such versatility, richness and ancestry that even the most illiterate Spaniard is able to today? Three million years of Greek, Latin Arabic and Spanish are behind it. This for me, however you look at it, shows that the Spanish language has got cojones.
