Texte source - anglais As a kid I kept thinking the insurance man was my father. Not that I knew him mind (I only met him the once), but I heard him often enough. I can remember my mother’s voice pleading with him. Was it over money? We weren’t poor, although my father – my real father that is – was dead. He had been a diplomat, so he didn’t exactly leave us destitute. But I got it into my head that my mother hadn’t the money to pay the insurance man and he sought payment in other ways. I should say at this stage that my mother was an uncommonly beautiful woman. Everyone’s mother is beautiful I know in the eyes of her offspring, but Mam’s beauty was universally acknowledged. When in her prime, her bright blue eyes and svelte figure attracted many suitors which, apart from the insurance man, included medical students, members of the corps diplomatique and even an IRA man. The last mentioned was a friend of her older brother, Tomás.
She found out that Uncle Tomás was a member of the IRA one day when, as a young girl, she was tidying the house for Muddy (my grandmother) and discovered his revolver in a hollowed-out book. It’s in my late father’s study now among real books, like a sort of heirloom.
She tried to deny or at least play down any republican involvement later in her life. However, she always had a soft spot for Michael Collins and frequently spoke of the waste of such a ‘fine strap of a man’. All this of course happened before she settled down and married the diplomat, Patrick Foley. Well, not that she really did settle down.
With the insurance man there was shouting and arguing and a familiarity not common for mere commercial transactions – that’s probably why I thought he was my father; well, I had no role model to go by. My real father died when I was two, or so I’m told.
I should point out that the shouting was on the man’s part, for my mother was gentle and rarely raised her voice. I was very close to her, at least I thought I was. As the only male member in the family I felt my role was to protect her. I went into the room once when the insurance man was berating her and she was in tears. I saw a giant before me. I remember big black boots, very shiny. And when I looked up I saw this bushy red beard which frightened me. Beards were for hiding behind. Santa only wore a beard so that children wouldn’t recognise him, but he took it off with his boots and his outfit when he went home. Every kid knew that. Beards were for big occasions. Beards were not for ordinary things like insurance collecting.
He fell silent when I came into the room. He was taken aback. Then he smiled at me, but when he tried to pat me on the head, I lifted a poker from the fireplace and lunged at him.
‘What have you done to my mother?’ I shouted.
He fended off the blows and held both my arms tightly, rendering them impotent, left hanging like the words in the gunbook, and the poker fell to the ground.
‘Someday when I’m bigger I’ll kill you, you bastard.’
‘Now now bastard Derek, what a word coming from an buachaill beag.’
At least I think he said that.
All this is so far back in time that it seems a fabrication. But my attempted assault of him is vivid. Mam refused to talk to me about the incident; she tried to pass it off as nothing. She said that I had too fertile an imagination. She said she was not well that day and Mr Counihan was simply trying to console her. When I said he had a loud way of consoling people, she gave me one of her withering looks which ended the matter.
Ever since then I realised that my mother and I were really not close at all, and soon after that incident I was sent off to boarding school in the country.
The cloistered world of boarding schools engenders a strained socialisation in students (and I suppose in staff as well). One is often forced into the company of people with whom one has little or nothing in common. The loudest ethos (often the voice of a bully) predominates. I never subscribed to the notion of having to get on with everyone, because man is a social being etc. To me it implied that everyone was the same, that there was no such thing as individuality, difference or freedom of choice in a person. Such qualities were suppressed (often viciously by ‘social man’) on the grounds that they constituted anti-social behaviour. But in my solitary studies I discovered that accomplishments in human endeavour were achieved by individuals, often against collective, social pressure.
The mundane reality, however, was that I carried a feeling of insecurity with me wherever I went: in my satchel, in my hurley stick, in my voice when I had to speak or read aloud. Trust is bred in an environment of love and stability. I missed out somewhere on the skill of trusting people. My pen was the only instrument that flowed freely, as if doubts themselves sought outlets through ink. I did quite well academically, particularly at history, for which I won the school gold medal.
Some of my scholastic peers were also diplomats’ children, but I didn’t feel at one with them. I tried many times to tell my mother that I wasn’t really a diplomat’s child at all. I mean Patrick was dead, and both she and I were in Ireland all the time since. It seemed a cruel form of justice to me that I should see my mother less frequently than other boys whose parents were stationed abroad. I did not mix well. I frequently took off to the library rather than have to engage even in mere phatic communication.
We queued for sweets on Friday evenings. And on Sundays I got a double supply because I was not one of those pupils who went home at weekends. Sweets were good. Sweets could mollify that heartsinking gloom that suffused empty dormitories on damp Sunday evenings where every sound had its echo.
I remember my first year boarding, the school hired a projector. It rented the films, Mise Éire and The Mark of Zorro. It was always two films in those days; that’s why Zorro was allowed, even though it was a foreign film. Raffle tickets were used for admission. I got the number eleven.
In my class there was a small, skinny fellow with a snub nose which accounted for his nickname of Pug. He resented me because I kept to myself, because I refused to bow down to him or join his gang, and also perhaps because I had got first in the class in the history examination.
He came strutting along the corridor one day flanked by a couple of his cronies. I greeted them in Irish as was the custom.
‘Here’s the historian.’ They taunted in English.
‘The piss-in-the-bed.’
‘What have you got for us, swot?’
They pushed me against the wall and forced me to turn out my pockets. A brown paper bag and my ticket fell to the ground. One of the cronies opened the bag.
‘Jelly Babies. He’s got Jelly Babies.’
These were not the school sweets but sweets my mother had sent from Muddy’s shop.
‘Don’t you know English sweets are not allowed?’ Pug said. ‘We’ll do the historian a favour. We’ll swallow the evidence so he wont be found out.’
They twisted my arm behind my back. ‘Say thank you,’ said Pug with a Jelly Baby dangling from his mouth. He saw the ticket on the ground. ‘Legs 11.’ He tore the ticket in two. ‘Just one leg now.’
‘I’ll get you for this,’ I said.
Pug smiled. ‘After school in the football field.’
I wanted to run away. But there is nowhere to run in a boarding school except into a field. All power left my body as Pug knocked me down and held me in a half nelson until I submitted. And it’s only now in hindsight that I know why I submitted. It wasn’t that he was stronger than me. I knew the fear was there all along but I could never pinpoint the cause of it. And there it was staring me in the face all the time. It’s what happens when you don’t feel loved. You feel you’re standing on one leg.
I also learned that day why I liked history. It provided a cover. It let you off the hook. You could project your personal fears into the national psyche. You could blame other races for your own shortcomings. And nobody need ever know.
I never got to see the films. I was told by a teacher to go away and be more careful with my ticket in future. I saw re-enactments of Zorro all right, on classroom desks with rulers as swords, and for a while some pupils went around marking Z on copy books and walls. Some of them even made cardboard masks.
Pug met me again. He wore a mask, but it was easy to see it was him. He wanted to fill me in on what the film was about. It was a shame I wasn’t able to go. He had a blade. The cronies opened my shirt and held my mouth, and Pug cut the letter Z on my chest.
I didn’t cry. There wasn’t really any pain. It was just a superficial cut. I kept my handkerchief pressed against it to save my shirt. It would stop bleeding if I stayed long enough in the library.
I looked up my first Spanish word, zorro for ‘fox’ at the back of a dictionary. It was a funny way to start learning a language, from back to front. It reminded me of our history teacher saying to us that we should learn history backwards because we leave school before we get to the present.
I had to come home for a while after that incident (to my mother’s chagrin) when my bedwetting caused concern to the school authorities. Some of the boys in the dormitory objected to the smell and said they didn’t want to sleep in the same room as me. I was sent to the Saint John of God clinic. I delighted the doctor there (or so she said) by imagining all sorts of ogres and dragons in the shapes she held up for me to see on cards. She gave me two colouring pencils, green and navy-blue. In my diary I was to mark green for the dry nights and navy-blue for the wet nights. I was praised for the green nights by the doctor, but not by my mother. She just sighed for the blue nights and said she would have to ‘tie a ribbon around it’. And as for the green nights, she said nothing at all.
When I was home that year I vaguely recollect talk of trouble in the North. The UVF had failed to find some well-known republican whom they were searching for, and they killed an innocent man instead simply because he was singing rebel ballads. My mother was very upset about the incident.
‘As sure as God they’re going to bring it all down here,’ she said.
I worried about her being on her own, especially when I heard about her being burgled, but once again she remained reticent about such matters and insisted on my staying in boarding school to finish my studies.
I remember coming home in March of my last year at school. The air was icy. People were muffled in heavy coats and scarves and gloves and their hot breaths were visible as if trying to proclaim an existence of their own. Everyone was rushing about sure of where he was going and impatient to get there. Everyone that is except me.
On the train there was a lot of talk about some IRA man who had been arrested that morning. Nelson’s Pillar had been blown up. I thought it strange how some of the passengers, although decrying the loss of the Pillar, expressed disappointment about the arrest. It was as if they were sad that the culprit had been outfoxed by the police. Maybe there is an anarchic strain in many of us deep down. Ambivalence! Maybe it’s to do with our colonised past. And there were others who kept their tongues behind tightly closed teeth.
Mam was listening intently to the news on the wireless when I arrived. She did not greet me. She did not hug me. She simply said, ‘It’s a blessed relief. The trouble that animal has caused.’
Her words, or rather the way she expressed them, unnerved me. She was going over the top. I mean the guy (or guys? – my mother kept talking in the singular) was only accused of blowing up an accumulation of stones, and yeah, okay he shattered a few shop windows, but no one was killed. She spoke, however, almost as from a primary source (as we say in history), as if she knew who the accused person was.
‘He could’ve changed him. He didn’t have to blow him up. He could’ve moulded him into someone else,’ she muttered half to herself.
The British media hyped the explosion up too: they called it a terrorist act.
My mother’s hair is no longer blond; it is like a grey mountain with streaks of snow running through it. Her health is poor. Despite her emphysema, she continues to smoke. ‘They’re all I have,’ she says, referring to her untipped cigarettes.
Mam has become forgetful. Not that she was ever very thoughtful – she was always selective about what she installed in her memory bank. She instructed me what to remember or forget. Remember your prayers. Remember to go to Mass and wash your teeth and polish your shoes, back as well as front, and not like the soldiers’ spit which only shone the front of their boots. Wash behind your ears. Remember to study. And forget? Forget anything that touches the heart or questions that delve too deep.
But now her forgetfulness is spontaneous. She goes upstairs and comes down again and asks me why she went up in the first place. She talks about selling the house. My mother is locked into a time warp. She looks at house prices in old newspapers. She quotes from the Irish Independent of the forties, price 2d (Mam hoards old papers). ‘A four bedroomed in Clontarf with spacious gardens on top of the sea selling for one thousand one hundred pounds. We should get more than that,’ she says; ‘we’re on top of the mountains.’
She tells me she waited until I had finished my studies before moving, as if she were trying to hold on, to suffer it out for as long as she could for my sake. But she can’t take it any longer. When I ask her to explain why she wants to leave, she says it’s a feeling – and feelings are real things – of not being safe.
In my father’s study the walls are lined with books, except for one wall on which there hangs a painting. It depicts a snowstorm: people are huddled in capes as they cross a mountain with a beast of burden; and a bare tree, bent by the storm, struggles alone for survival.
There is a writing desk: mahogany with a yellow leather top. By the window an earthenware pot houses a golden Lobivia cactus which my father had grown from seed. Mam said that he used to talk to the seed to coax it into life, to bring sunshine into a dull room. Beside the pot there is an old gramophone and records in faded sleeves.
One of the drawers in the writing desk is locked. I find the key for it in an envelope in an open drawer – my father would not have won a medal for concealment. When I unlock the drawer I find diaries and letters, lots of them. I lift up one of the diaries and a cutting, gone mustard, from an old newspaper, falls out. It’s from the ‘Thanksgiving’ Section.’ An encircled piece of print gives thanks for success in an examination to ‘Great Saint Joseph of Cupertino,’ it reads, ‘I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Signed: Patrick.’
Underneath the letters I discover old girlie magazines. On flicking through some of the pages with their sepia-coloured photographs, I stop at one with a turned-up corner. A beautiful young girl crouching on all fours looks straight into my face. Her eyes are so alive that I swear they moved. But of course this has to be my imagination, as my mother would say. But for me she came alive; she unwound herself from the confinement of paper and the wooden prison of the drawer and entered inside my head.
An interesting observation: while I was attracted to her, I was not aroused physically despite her nakedness. Rather, her vulnerability evoked in me a desire to protect her, to shield her from the world. But she was someone else’s woman, a secret woman locked away. And the magazine was faded and crinkled. It smelled of age. To dwell lustfully on her would be a sort of necrophilia.
Why did my father mark this page? Is it only in our fantasies that we find compatibility? I’m not sure why I say that. I’m not at all clear. But then I never was. Too many imaginings, too many dreams.
My father died from a heart attack. He was elderly when he married. I have no memory of him. Mam, understandably, finds it all too painful to talk about him. So, since I discovered the diaries, I have been secretly reading extracts from them the last couple of times I came home. Mam has not twigged it yet. I read randomly when she is elsewhere engaged.
He was very fond of literature, and the mahogany shelves of his study are crammed with literary books and manuscripts and poems. I also counted six different bibles. I sometimes take down his books and try to feel the breath of his life in them and imagine my pen blending in with his annotations. And of course one of the books has the hollow inside.
However, despite the books and the magazines and the revolver, it is his diaries which really draw me into my father’s world. They reveal a cryptic universe which leaves me fearful at times to delve too deeply. That is why (initially at least) I can only ingest small fragments at a time, and that is why I am in no great hurry to get to the ‘there’ that everybody else seems to be going to with such haste.
I sit at my father’s desk – all his files, diplomatic correspondences, all untouched, all left neatly. What is diplomacy? I look up a dictionary. It is from the Greek – diplomas, documents or treaties; ‘the keeping of such documents to facilitate the recreation of the past.’
I casually open a page of his diaries:
September 1938:
Had to go to Barcelona to do a report on the Catalan situation. Such a wonderful change from Madrid. I can smell the sea air. I can breathe. Wandered along the Ramblas. Couldn’t believe it was L when I saw her standing there. Never thought I would see her again. Despite heavy makeup, I still recognise the little girl inside. Stayed overnight. Long journey (621 kilometres) but worth it – fertile. Besides, distance reinforces anonymity. Will go again next Thursday; easy to find a pretext. Can sleep in the overnight train if I can’t get the car.
My mother is packing, clearing things, filling boxes. She really meant it after all when she said she was moving. She takes clothes from one box and puts them in another, and then she says she can’t see what she is doing, and she runs her fingers along the windowsill in search of her spectacles. So many years spent semi-reclusively in a suburban house, and now it is all to end. It was the last break-in that made her snap. Thieves gained entry by prising open the latch on the kitchen window. I got a six inch nail and hammered the window permanently shut. Too late! She wants to move into an apartment, protected by intercom and security guards.
‘You take his books, Derek; you might make use of them.’
My mother never goes near my father’s things except to dust them occasionally with her long feather duster. She treats them as fixtures. Her feather brushes lightly over them as if they are little sticks of furniture with nothing inside.
‘Were there many break-ins Mam?’
‘Ever since forty seven, that terrible winter, the house was never secure.’
She sighs so deeply, I feel as if her whole life is expiring. Words are breaths. We are allowed so many, and then they are all used up.
‘No more. They took my cross and chain.’ She is suddenly alarmed. ‘Where’s my cross and chain?’
She did not have a cross and chain.
My mother’s mind wanders between solid worlds and floating worlds. ‘We have to bear our cross.’ She stares at me accusingly, as if to say I am responsible for all her misery. Then she smiles and says matter-of-factly, ‘I’ll be safer in a flat with a caretaker, don’t you know?’

Tutto ciò accadde così tanto tempo fa che sembra un’invenzione. Ma il mio tentativo di assalirlo è un ricordo vivido. Mamma si rifiutò di parlarmi dell’accaduto; cercò di farlo passare per una cosa irrilevante. Disse che avevo un’immaginazione troppo fervida. Disse che quel giorno non si sentiva bene e che Mr. Counihan stava solo cercando di consolarla. Quando le dissi che il suo modo di consolare la gente era piuttosto rumoroso, mi lanciò una delle sue occhiate raggelanti che pose fine alla questione.

La vita da reclusi del collegio genera una socializzazione forzata negli studenti (e immagino anche nel personale). Spesso si è costretti a cercare la compagnia di persone con le quali si ha poco o niente in comune. L’ethos più forte (spesso la voce di un bullo) è quello che prevale. Non ho mai condiviso l’idea di dover andare d’accordo con tutti, perché l’uomo è un animale sociale ecc. Per me significava che eravamo tutti uguali, che in una persona non esistevano caratteristiche come individualità, diversità o libertà di scelta. Queste qualità erano soffocate (spesso con violenza da un ‘animale sociale’) perché considerate comportamenti antisociali. Ma nei miei studi solitari scoprii che i risultati negli sforzi umani furono raggiunti da individui, spesso in lotta contro pressione sociale e collettiva.
Tuttavia, nella realtà dei fatti, portavo con me un senso di insicurezza ovunque andassi: nella mia cartella, nella mia mazza da hurling, nella mia voce quando dovevo parlare o leggere di fronte alla classe. La fiducia si coltiva in un ambiente di amore e di stabilità. In qualche modo ero rimasto escluso dalla capacità di fidarmi degli altri. La mia penna era l’unico strumento a scorrere liberamente, come se i dubbi stessi cercassero di scappare attraverso l’inchiostro. Ottenevo buoni risultati, in particolare in storia, tanto che vinsi la medaglia d’oro della scuola in questa materia.
Alcuni dei miei compagni erano figli di diplomatici come me, ma non ci andavo molto d’accordo. Provai varie volte a dire a mia madre che non ero affatto un vero figlio di diplomatico. Voglio dire, Patrick era morto, e sia lei che io eravamo sempre rimasti in Irlanda. Era per me una crudele forma di giustizia dover vedere mia madre meno di frequente di altri ragazzi i cui genitori risiedevano all’estero. Non mi integravo bene. Andavo di frequente in biblioteca pur di non partecipare anche solo alle più banali comunicazioni fatiche.
Venerdì sera facevamo la coda per le caramelle. E la domenica ricevevo una doppia razione perché non ero fra gli studenti che tornavano a casa il fine settimana. Le caramelle erano buone. Le caramelle potevano ammorbidire quella tristezza che ti stringeva il cuore, e che in umide domeniche sera si spandeva per i dormitori vuoti, dove ogni suono aveva la sua eco.
Ricordo che il mio primo anno di collegio la scuola assunse un proiezionista. Affittò dei film, Mise Éire e Il segno di Zorro. Erano sempre due film all’epoca; è per questo che ci fu permesso di vedere Zorro, anche se era un film straniero. Biglietti della lotteria vennero usati come ingressi. Mi venne dato il numero undici.
Nella mia classe c’era un ragazzino piccolo ed esile con il naso schiacciato, e che per questo era soprannominato Carlino. Non gli andavo a genio perché me ne stavo in disparte, perché mi rifiutavo di sottomettermi a lui o unirmi alla sua banda, e forse anche perché avevo ottenuto il risultato migliore della classe nel compito di storia.
Un giorno venne verso di me pavoneggiandosi lungo il corridoio, fiancheggiato da due dei suoi compari. Lo salutai in irlandese, com’era d’uso.
‘Ecco qui lo storico.’ Mi schernirono in inglese.
‘Il piscialletto.’
‘Che hai da darci, secchione?’
Mi spinsero contro il muro e mi obbligarono a svuotare le tasche. Un sacchetto di carta marrone e il mio biglietto caddero a terra. Uno dei compari aprì il sacchetto.
‘Jelly Babies. Ha delle Jelly Babies.’
Non erano caramelle della scuola, ma caramelle che mia madre mi aveva mandato dal negozio di Muddy.
‘Non lo sai che le caramelle inglesi sono proibite?’ Disse Carlino. ‘Faremo un favore allo storico. Mangeremo le prove così non lo scopriranno.’
Mi torsero il braccio dietro la schiena. ‘Ringrazia,’ disse Carlino con una caramella che gli penzolava dalla bocca. Vide il biglietto a terra. ‘Guarda un po’, numero undici.’ Strappò il biglietto a metà.
‘Numero zero adesso.’
‘Te la farò pagare,’ dissi.
Carlino sorrise. ‘Dopo scuola nel campo da calcio.’
Volevo scappare. Ma da un collegio si può scappare solo nei campi. Tutte le forze mi abbandonarono mentre Carlino mi atterrava e mi teneva fermo con una mezza nelson finché mi arresi. Ed è solo con il senno di poi che so perché mi arresi. Non era perché fosse più forte di me. Sapevo che la paura era lì per tutto il tempo, ma non ho mai potuto individuarne con esattezza la causa. Eppure era sempre lì con gli occhi fissi su di me. È quel che succede quando non ti senti amato. Ti senti appeso a un filo.
Quel giorno imparai anche perché mi piaceva la storia. Mi dava riparo. Mi dava respiro. Mi permetteva di proiettare le mie paure personali nella psiche di un’intera nazione. Mi permetteva di incolpare altre razze dei miei difetti. E nessuno l’avrebbe mai saputo.
Alla fine non vidi nessuno dei film. Un insegnante si rifiutò di farmi entrare e mi disse di stare più attento ai biglietti in futuro. Vidi però molte imitazioni di Zorro, sui banchi con righelli a mo’ di spade, e per un po’ alcuni studenti andarono in giro a incidere delle Z su libri e pareti. Alcuni costruirono persino maschere di cartone.
Carlino mi affrontò di nuovo. Indossava una maschera, ma era facile capire che fosse lui. Voleva riassumermi la trama del film. Era un peccato che non avessi potuto vederlo. Aveva una lametta. I compari mi slacciarono la camicia e mi tapparono la bocca, e Carlino incise la lettera Z sul mio petto.
Non piansi. Non faceva molto male in realtà. Era solo un taglio superficiale. Tenni un fazzoletto premuto contro per salvare la camicia. Avrebbe smesso di sanguinare se fossi rimasto abbastanza a lungo in biblioteca.
Cercai la mia prima parola spagnola, zorro, ovvero ‘volpe’, in fondo a un dizionario. Era un modo strano di cominciare a imparare una lingua, dalla fine all’inizio. Mi ricordò di quel che diceva il professore di storia, che dovremmo imparare la storia all’indietro perché lasciamo la scuola prima di arrivare al presente.
Dopo quell’episodio, dovetti tornare a casa per un po’ (con il disappunto di mia madre) quando la mia incontinenza notturna causò preoccupazione tra le autorità scolastiche. Alcuni dei ragazzi nel dormitorio si lamentavano dell’odore e dicevano di non voler dormire in stanza con me. Mi mandarono alla clinica Saint John of God. Con gran divertimento della dottoressa (o per lo meno così disse), mi immaginavo ogni sorta di orco o drago nelle macchie dipinte sulle tavole che mi mostrava. Mi diede due matite colorate, una verde e una blu scuro. Nel mio diario dovevo segnare in verde le notti asciutte e in blu le notti in cui bagnavo il letto. Venivo lodato per le notti verdi dalla dottoressa, ma non da mia madre. Lei semplicemente sospirava per le notti blu e diceva che ‘avrebbe dovuto legarlo con una nastro’. Sulle notti verdi, invece, non diceva proprio niente.
Quell’anno, mentre ero a casa, ricordo vagamente alcuni discorsi sui disordini nel nord del Paese. L’UVF non era riuscita a trovare un famoso repubblicano che stava cercando, e al suo posto aveva ucciso un uomo innocente solo perché cantava ballate ribelli. Mia madre ne rimase molto turbata.
‘Sicuro come l’oro cercheranno di portare guai anche quaggiù,’ disse.
Mi preoccupava il fatto che vivesse sola, soprattutto quando seppi che dei ladri avevano svaligiato casa, ma ancora una volta fu restia a parlarne e insistette affinché rimanessi in collegio per terminare gli studi.
Tornai a casa nel marzo dell’ultimo anno di scuola. L’aria era gelida. La gente era infagottata in cappotti pesanti e sciarpe e guanti, e il suo respiro caldo si palesava come a voler reclamare un’esistenza propria. Tutti si precipitavano di qua e di là, sicuri di dove andare e impazienti di arrivarci. Vale a dire, tutti tranne me.
Sul treno si faceva un gran parlare di un uomo dell’IRA che era stato arrestato quella mattina. La colonna di Nelson nel centro di Dublino era stata fatta saltare in aria. Mi parve strano che alcuni passeggeri, benché deplorassero la perdita della colonna, si mostrassero delusi dall’arresto. Era come se si rattristassero che la polizia avesse superato il colpevole in astuzia. Forse, sotto sotto, molti di noi possiedono una tendenza anarchica. Che ambivalenza! Forse ha a che fare con il nostro passato di popolo colonizzato. E c’erano altri che tenevano la lingua ferma dietro bocche ben cucite.
Quando arrivai, Mamma stava ascoltando con attenzione le notizie alla radio. Non mi salutò. Non mi abbracciò. Disse solo, ‘Grazie al cielo, che liberazione. Se penso ai guai che quell’animale ha causato.’
Le sue parole, o piuttosto il modo in cui le pronunciò, mi turbarono. Stava esagerando. Voglio dire, il tizio (o tizi – mia madre continuava a usare il singolare) era solo accusato di aver fatto saltare in aria un mucchio di pietre, e sì, va bene che aveva mandato in frantumi qualche vetrina, ma non era morto nessuno. Tuttavia, lei parlava come se conoscesse una fonte primaria (come diciamo noi storici), come se conoscesse la persona accusata.
‘Avrebbe potuto cambiarlo. Non era necessario farlo esplodere. Avrebbe potuto trasformarlo in un’altra persona,’ borbottò tra sé e sé.
I media britannici gonfiarono la notizia: lo chiamarono attacco terroristico.
I capelli di mia madre non sono più biondi; sono come una montagna grigia segnata qua e là da strisce innevate. La sua salute è debole. Nonostante l’enfisema, non vuole smettere di fumare. ‘È tutto quel che mi rimane,’ dice, riferendosi alle sue sigarette senza filtro.
Mamma si dimentica le cose. Non che abbia mai avuto una grande memoria – è sempre stata molto selettiva riguardo ai ricordi da immagazzinare. Mi ordinava cosa ricordare e cosa dimenticare. Ricordati di dire le preghiere. Ricordati di andare a messa e lavarti i denti e lustrare le scarpe, dietro oltre che davanti, non come lo sputo dei soldati che lucida solo la parte anteriore degli stivali. Lavati dietro le orecchie. Ricordati di studiare. E dimenticare? Dimentica tutto quel che riguarda il cuore o le domande che scavano troppo a fondo.
Ma adesso la sua dimenticanza è spontanea. Sale al piano di sopra e ridiscende per chiedermi perché fosse salita. Parla di vendere la casa. Mia madre è rinchiusa in un eterno passato. Guarda i prezzi delle case in vecchi giornali. Cita dall’Irish Independent degli anni quaranta, costo due penny (Mamma accumula giornali vecchi). ‘Una casa di quattro stanze a Clontarf con ampio giardino in cima al mare si vende per millecento sterline. A noi dovrebbero dare di più,’ dice; ‘noi siamo in cima alla montagna.’
Mi dice che ha aspettato che io finissi gli studi prima di trasferirsi, come se cercasse di resistere, di sopportare il più possibile per il mio bene. Ma non ce la fa più. Quando le chiedo di spiegarmi perché vuole andarsene, dice che ha la sensazione (e le sensazioni sì che sono autentiche) di non sentirsi al sicuro.
Nello studio di mio padre gli scaffali sono pieni di libri, eccetto una piccola parete sulla quale è appeso un quadro. Rappresenta una tempesta di neve: le persone, infagottate in mantelli, attraversano una montagna con una bestia da soma; e un albero spoglio, piegato dalla tempesta, lotta da solo per la sopravvivenza. C’è una scrivania: mogano con una copertura di cuoio giallo. Vicino alla finestra un vaso di terracotta ospita un cactus che mio padre aveva fatto crescere piantandone i semi. Mamma dice che parlava ai semi per indurlo a crescere, per portare calore in una stanza triste. Accanto al vaso c’è un vecchio grammofono e dischi in custodie sbiadite.
Uno dei cassetti della scrivania è chiuso a chiave. Ho trovato la chiave per aprirlo in una busta dentro un cassetto aperto; mio padre non avrebbe certo vinto un premio per il miglior nascondiglio. Quando apro il cassetto, vi trovo diari e lettere, tanti diari e tante lettere. Sollevo uno dei diari e un ritaglio di un vecchio giornale, ormai color senape, scivola fuori. È della ‘Sezione ringraziamenti’. Un testo cerchiato a penna ne contiene uno rivolto al ‘grande Giuseppe da Copertino’ per il superamento di un esame; c’è scritto ‘Ho promesso di far conoscere il tuo nome e far sì che ti invocassero. Firmato: Patrick.’
Sotto le lettere scopro vecchie riviste erotiche. Sfogliando alcune delle pagine con le loro foto color seppia, mi fermo su di una con un angolo piegato. Una bella ragazza a carponi mi guarda dritto in faccia. I suoi occhi sono così vivi che potrei giurare si siano mossi. Ma di sicuro è stata la mia immaginazione, come direbbe mia madre. Secondo me, invece, si è animata per davvero; si è liberata della sua cella cartacea e della prigionia di legno del cassetto ed è entrata nella mia testa.
Una nota interessante: anche se ero attratto da lei, non mi sentivo eccitato, nonostante fosse nuda. Piuttosto, la sua vulnerabilità scatenò in me il desiderio di proteggerla, di farmi per lei scudo contro il mondo. Ma era la donna di qualcun’altro, una donna segreta tenuta sotto chiave. E la rivista era sbiadita e sgualcita. Odorava di anni. Soffermarmi su di lei con desiderio sarebbe stato una specie di necrofilia.
Perché mio padre aveva segnato quella pagina? È solo nelle nostre fantasie che troviamo la compatibilità? Non so bene perché lo dico. Non sono affatto chiaro. Ma allora non lo ero mai. Troppo immaginare, troppo sognare.
Mio padre morì per un attacco di cuore. Era già anziano quando si sposò. Non mi ricordo di lui. Per Mamma, com’e comprensibile, è troppo doloroso parlarne. Dunque, da quando ho scoperto i diari, ne ho letto in segreto alcuni brani durante le mie ultime visite a casa. Mamma non se n’è ancora accorta. Leggo passi a caso quando ha qualcosa da fare da qualche altra parte.
Era appassionato di letteratura, e gli scaffali in mogano del suo studio sono stipati di libri e manoscritti e poesie. Ho anche contato sei Bibbie diverse. A volte prendo questi libri e cerco di sentirvi un suo alito di vita e immagino la mia penna che si confonde con le sue annotazioni. E naturalmente uno dei libri è scavato.
Nonostante i libri e le riviste e la revolver, sono i diari che mi attirano per davvero nel mondo di mio padre. Rivelano un universo criptico che a volte mi mette paura di scavare troppo a fondo. Ecco perché (almeno all’inizio) posso ingerire piccoli frammenti poco per volta, ed ecco perché non ho fretta di arrivare lì dove tutti gli altri sembrano voler andare con così tanta fretta.
Siedo alla scrivania di mio padre – tutte le sue cartelle, la sua corrispondenza diplomatica, tutto intatto, tutto lasciato in ordine. Cos’e la diplomazia? Cerco in un dizionario. Viene dal greco diplomas, documenti o trattati; ‘la salvaguardia di tali documenti per facilitare la ricostruzione del passato.’

Settembre 1938:
A Barcellona per scrivere una relazione sulla situazione catalana. Bellissimo cambiamento rispetto a Madrid. Posso sentire l’odore del mare. Posso respirare. Passeggiata lungo le Ramblas. Non potevo credere che fosse L quando l’ho vista davanti a me. Mai avrei pensato di rivederla. Nonostante il trucco pesante, riconosco ancora la ragazzina dentro di lei. Rimasto per la notte. Viaggio lungo (621 chilometri) ma ne è valsa la pena – fertile. Inoltre, la distanza rafforza l’anonimato. Tornerò giovedì prossimo; facile trovare un pretesto. Posso dormire nel treno di notte se non trovo una macchina.
Mia madre fa le valigie, raccoglie cose, riempie scatole. Dopo tutto faceva sul serio quando diceva che si sarebbe trasferita. Prende i vestiti da una scatola e li mette in un’altra, poi dice che non riesce a vedere quel che fa, e scorre le dita lungo il davanzale della finestra alla ricerca dei suoi occhiali. Così tanti anni passati quasi da reclusi in una casa di periferia, e ora è tutto finito. È stata l’ultima irruzione a farla reagire. I ladri sono entrati aprendo la serratura della finestra della cucina. Ho preso dei chiodi e chiuso ermeticamente la finestra. Troppo tardi! Vuole trasferirsi in un appartamento, protetta da citofoni e guardie di sicurezza.
‘Prendi tu i suoi libri, Derek; potrebbero esserti utili.’
Mia madre non si avvicina mai alle cose di mio padre se non per pulirle occasionalmente con il suo spolverino. Per lei è come se non si potessero spostare. Le piume le accarezzano leggermente come fossero pezzi di mobilio vuoti.
‘Ci sono state molte irruzioni, Mamma?’
‘A partire dal quarantasette, quell’inverno orribile, la casa non è mai stata sicura.’
Sospira così profondamente che mi sembra che la vita intera la stia abbandonando. Le parole sono respiri. Ce ne vengono concesse molte, ma alla fine sono tutte consumate.
‘Adesso basta. Hanno preso la mia catena con la croce.’ All’improvviso si allarma. ‘Dov’è la mia catena con la croce?’
Non aveva una catena con la croce.
La mente di mia madre vaga tra mondi saldi e mondi fluttuanti. ‘Dobbiamo portare la nostra croce.’ Mi fissa con sguardo accusatore, come per dirmi che sono la causa di tutta la sua sofferenza. Poi sorride e mi dice con fare pratico, ‘Sarò più al sicuro in un appartamento con un custode, sai?’

About
I am an Italian freelance translator, proofreader and post-editor based in Spain. I translate and post-edit from English and French into Italian, which is my native language. I also speak Spanish and a little bit of German and Russian. Apart from being a professional and passionate translator and post-editor, I am also an online trainer of Italian as a foreign language for adults.
Education
After obtaining a BA in Modern Languages and Cultures from the University of Pavia (cum laude), I graduated cum laude from the University of Bologna's Advanced School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators. During my University career I took part in an international exchange program with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I took courses in translation, French literature, children's literature and contemporary critical theory, and taught Italian as Foreign Fellow to a class of English-speaking students. I also obtained a First-level Executive Master in Didactics and Promotion of Italian Language and Culture to Foreigners.
