On les raille, on les rend coupables de tous les maux, une exposition au Grand Palais et plusieurs livres viennent pourtant le rappeler: la bohème historique elle-même était déjà un fantasme de bourgeois.
N’en déplaise aux détracteurs des bobos, le style de vie bohème fut, dès l’origine, un rêve bourgeois. Dans la France prospère du XIXe siècle, quelques fils d’employés, d’artisans, ou même de rentiers, allaient éprouver ce besoin de rupture sociale entièrement tourné vers l’idéal artistique. Ils voyaient naïvement chez les bohémiens, ces pauvres vagabonds, l’exemple d’une vie libre, errant sur les chemins. Balzac, dans Un prince de la bohème (1845), décrit la religion de ces jeunes gens fâchés avec leur milieu d’origine:« La bohème n’a rien et vit de ce qu’elle a. L’espérance est sa religion, la foi en soi-même est son code, la charité passe pour être son budget. » La bohème, en ce temps-là, n’habitait pas des duplex hors de prix, mais de vraies soupentes mal chauffées sous les toits; elle n’était pas de gauche comme on s’achète une bonne conscience, mais elle dénigrait toutes les conventions. Pendant plus d’un siècle, elle allait inspirer les artistes… jusqu’à devenir à son tour un lieu commun.
La belle exposition qui se tient au Grand Palais jusqu’au 14 janvier montre les différentes étapes de la constitution du mythe bohème, commençant par les representations de ces gitans qui, bien avant les Roms, sillonnaient les routes, dépenaillés, armés d’un violon et pratiquant la mendicité. Descendaient-ils des Indiens ou des Egyptiens? On leur prêtait des pouvoirs surnaturels joliment représentés dans La Diseuse de bonne aventure, de Georges de La Tour.

The French Bobos (the wealthy middle classes who hold left-wing views) are mocked by the French and blamed for every evil yet, an exhibition in Paris and many literary works are a constant reminder that the history of the Bohemian was a bourgeois fantasy right from the start.
With all due respect to the critics of the French Bobos, the Bohemian lifestyle was a middle-class dream from the beginning. In a prosperous 19th-century France some sons of clerks, artisans and even the comfortably off, felt the need to completely break away from social traditions and move towards the artistic ideal. They naively considered the bohemians to be poverty-stricken wanderers, leading a free and easy life, roaming the highways. In his work ‘A prince of Bohemia’ (1845), Balzac describes the beliefs of these young people dissatisfied with their social upbringing: ‘The Bohemian has nothing and lives on what he has. Hope is his religion, faith in oneself his creed and charity is what little money he possesses. In those days, Bohemians did not live in fancy apartments, but instead in chilly garrets; they did not adopt left-wing views to salve their consciences, but sneered at all conventions. Bohemia would inspire artists etc for more than a century until it became part of the mainstream.
The impressive exhibition, which is held in Paris until 14 January, displays the different stages of the Bohemian myth, beginning with the portrayal of the Gypsies who, long before the Roma, wandered across the land in rags, carrying a violin and begging. Did they descend from Indians or Egyptians? Their supposed psychic powers are charmingly depicted in George de la Tour’s ‘Fortune-Teller’.
