Texte source - anglais Modern day cultural scholars continue to debate the origins of contemporary graffiti. Most determine the birthplace of the form to have been Washington Heights, New York in early 1971 (TAKI 183) or perhaps two years prior in Queens (Julio 204) before spreading to the five boroughs then worldwide.1 However, this essay aims to expose “the imperialism of the present” – the cultural viewpoint that what is happening now is at its height of human invention. The tendency of this popular and academic stance to often dismiss anything occurring before 1968 as not worthy of further reflection – if not actively destroying evidence of previous innovations and withholding acknowledgement of its participants – runs the danger of discounting the raw and extensive history of the cultures that came before it, not to mention the cultures still living along side it, which have grown rich by feeding from the roots not severed from their past.
The etymological root of the word graffiti itself comes from the Latin graffiato2 (scratched), so it only follows that the first instances of graffiti originate in the same place where the term first came into use. Those ancient inscriptions, figure drawings and words found on the walls of the old Catacombs of Rome or among the ruins of Pompeii leave a centuries’ long indelible mark on history, evidence of an extensive graffiti culture that has been in existence since long before Fab 5 Freddy. The word has evolved over time to include any graphics applied to surfaces in a manner that constitutes vandalism. But as this essay aims to point out, the concept of “vandalism” itself is an imperialistic value judgment placed on a time-honored tradition.
The eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD preserved for the ages inscriptions in the ruins of Pompeii which have provided scholars insight into a highly literate and remarkably promiscuous ancient Roman street life. Proclamations of love – “If anyone does not believe in Venus, they should gaze at my girl friend.” Curses – “Chie, I hope your hemorrhoids rub together so much that they hurt worse than they ever have before!” Notices of sexual conquests – “I screwed a lot of girls here” and “I have buggered men.” As well as where to find more –“If anyone wants a screw, he should look for Attice; she costs 4 sterii.”3 In short, it details a thriving urban civilization not particularly unlike our own. The salient features of humanity were long established and publically expressed already two-thousand years ago. This discounts any argument made about the rise of rap music or gay rights contributing to society’s “moral decline,” human civilization is founded upon the appreciation of poop jokes and juvenile humor.
One particular feature of mankind this essay believes instructive to focus on is the origination of phallic representations in public places. Even preserved in the volcano’s ash, we find a drawing of a phallus accompanied by the text mansueta tene – handle with care.4 Countless examples of phallic symbols have been recovered. In the recent renovation of the Colosseum, beneath the decades of calcified rock and grime, a graffiti image of a phallus dated to the 3rd century was revealed on the colorful fresco in the last intact passageway. Officials believed such images were commonly drawn for good luck.5 In the 16.561 km long Aqua Appia aqueduct built in 312 BC, phallic graffiti had been drawn by monks in the expansive tunnels.6 Etched in rock and doodled in ash, the phallic symbol has a long tradition in graffiti culture.
A criticism this graffiti of predominantly sexual and phallic nature must address is the role of women, or their lack of visible role, in its creation or expression. Although contemporary graffiti is largely performed by predominantly young men who have made it a hostile culture for women to participate in – most likely a result of the pervasive hostile nature towards all women in all contemporary culture – is not an accurate way to appraise a female’s interest level in graffiti or ability. Recent research by Professor of Archeological Anthropology Dean R. Snow show that seventy percent of the paintings purported to be painted by “cavemen” may have been done by Neolithic women.7 Even if the methodology that produced those results may be contested, it also brings into light the present day assumption that men were the only ones who expressed themselves with figurative art. As it turns out, the imperialism of the present is directly tied with the patriachalization of the past, that is to say, systematic omissions of women’s roles from the history books skew what happened in the past to reflect values of the present. In this case, the cultural assumption that all women did in the past was die in childbirth and that present day society is much better for women inasmuch as they can have babies without dying now. Progress. But also preserved in the eruption in Pompeii is the indelible evidence that women’s voices were involved in the rich street life conversation on the walls of their town: “Theophilus, don’t perform oral sex on girls against the city wall like a dog.” “Virgula to her friend Titius: you are disgusting!” “Atimetus got me pregnant” “I don’t want to sell my husband, not for all the gold in the world.” “The man I am having dinner with is a barbarian.” “You fuck well, Felix.”8 Mothers and sisters and girlfriends, friends and lovers, all women with an active part in their vibrant civic life. Not simply silent child-bearers or cock receptacles, they were participants shaping their culture.
An oddly literal example of the values of modernity mounting attacks against the ancient traditions of form is the exposure and consequent restoration catastrophe of the 723-year-old mural The Tree of Fertility/L’Albero della Fecondita uncovered in the Tuscan town of Massa Marittima.9 Positioned over the town’s water supply in the 13th century, the mural featured nine woman below the boughs of a large tree. Dangling ripe from the branches were heavy-testicled and phallic-shaped fruits. However, after the restoration process was completed there were parts missing. Male parts. The restoration had promptly erased a portion of the penises, castrating the Tree of Fertility much to the dismay of historians and the waiting women below.
The shores of History are constantly being eroded, not by the waves of Time, but by men digging up the beaches and reshaping the terrain into something they’re comfortable with. The sole location in southern Italy, and arguably the world, where the tradition of phallic inscriptions remains is in a small town east of Taranto called Grottaglie. On the streets of Grottaglie the traditional art is kept alive and renewed by each coming generation where school-aged children are encouraged to engage in the art passed on to them by their predecessors. Nowhere else in the world can such a vibrant penile rebirth be witnessed, a living culture, the fruits nourished from long, deep penis-shaped roots.

Ma come si sostiene in questo saggio, il concetto stesso di vandalismo è un giudizio di valore “imperialista” inserito all’interno di una tradizione da tempo accettata e rispettata.

Dichiarazioni d’amore: “Chi non crede alla dea Venere, dovrebbe dare un’occhiata alla mia ragazza.” Inveisce:“Chio, spero che le tue emorroidi si sfreghino tra loro così tanto da provocarti un male mai provato prima!”. Messaggi di conquiste sessuali: “Qui, ho scopato un sacco di ragazze” e “ho sodomizzato degli uomini”. E ancora: “Chi si vuol fare una scopata, chieda di Attica; costa quattro assi.” In breve, queste iscrizioni mostrano una civiltà urbana piuttosto florida e non proprio simile alla nostra. Le caratteristiche salienti del genere umano erano già da tempo sviluppate ed espresse pubblicamente duemila anni fa.
Questo nega la rilevanza di tutti quei discorsi che sostengono che la nascita della musica rap o l’affermazione dei diritti dei gay hanno contribuito al declino morale della società, al contrario la civiltà umana si nutre di una cultura che apprezza scherzi e battute sporche, nonché una sana comicità infantile.
C’è un aspetto del genere umano che questo saggio ritiene istruttivo trattare: le rappresentazioni falliche nei luoghi pubblici. Persino tra le ceneri del vulcano, si trova conservato il disegno di un fallo accompagnato dalla scritta mansueta teme (maneggiare con cura). Sono stati recuperati infiniti esempi di simboli fallici. Nella recente ristrutturazione del Colosseo, sepolto sotto decenni di sporcizia e strati di roccia calcificata, è stato ritrovato un graffito raffigurante un fallo all’interno di un vivace affresco risalente al terzo secolo, situato nell’ultimo corridoio rimasto ancora intatto. Gli esperti pensano che queste immagini venissero dipinte per augurare buona fortuna. Nel chilometro 16,561 dell’acquedotto Appio, costruito a Roma nel 312 a.C., si possono trovare all’interno dei suoi condotti dei graffiti fallici disegnati dai monaci. Inciso nella roccia e scarabocchiato nella cenere, il simbolo fallico detiene una lunga tradizione nella cultura dei graffiti.
Tuttavia, occorre muovere una critica a questa tipologia di graffiti, di natura per lo più fallica e sessuale: l’assenza di un ruolo visibile della donna nella creazione o espressione di questa forma artistica.
Anche se oggi i graffiti sono in maggioranza realizzati da giovani di sesso maschile, che hanno reso questa cultura ostile alle donne che vogliono farne parte, questo non deve farci pensare che non ci sia un interesse o un’abilità femminile nell’arte dei graffiti. Le recenti ricerche del Professor Dean R. Snow, archeologo e antropologo, mostrano che il settanta per cento dei dipinti che si suppone siano stati disegnati da “uomini delle caverne”, potrebbero essere stati realizzati da donne dell’età neolitica. Anche se la metodologia utilizzata per arrivare a questi risultati può essere discutibile, emerge da questi fatti la credenza attuale che fossero uomini gli unici ad esprimere se stessi attraverso l’arte figurativa. Come risulta, l’imperialismo del presente è direttamente legato alla patriarcalizzazione del passato, vale a dire, come le sistematiche omissioni dai libri di storia dei diversi ruoli rivestiti dalla donna hanno deformato il passato per consentire la fioritura dei valori attuali. In questo caso, si tratta dell’affermazione culturale per cui in passato tutte le donne non erano che madri che morivano di parto e oggi possono vivere in una società migliore poiché porteranno alla luce i loro figli senza più morire. Progresso. Anche sui muri della città di Pompei è preservata la prova indelebile che le donne erano parte integrante delle conversazioni presenti nella ricca vita quotidiana della città: “Teofilo, non avere rapporti orali con le ragazze sui muri della città come se fossi un cane.” “Virgola al suo amico Tito: sei disgustoso!”. “Atimeto mi ha messo incinta” “Non voglio vendere mio marito, neanche per tutto l’oro del mondo.” “L’uomo con cui sto cenando è un barbaro.” “Scopi bene, Felix.” 8 Madri, sorelle e fidanzate, amanti e amiche, tutte donne che svolgono una parte attiva nella vibrante vita quotidiana dell’epoca. Non erano semplicemente gestanti silenziose o pure recettrici dell’organo maschile, erano protagoniste attive che forgiavano la loro cultura.
Un esempio curioso a proposito di come i valori della modernità abbiano distorto il significato delle forme risalenti alle tradizioni antiche riguarda il restauro dell’affresco dell’Albero della fecondità, scoperto nella città toscana di Massa Marittima. Posto sulla parete della fonte pubblica della città nel XIII secolo, il murale raffigurava nove donne sotto le frasche di un grosso albero. Dai pesanti rami pendevano testicoli maturi e frutti a forma di fallo. Ciò nonostante, al termine dei lavori, mancavano delle parti. Parti maschili. Il restauro aveva prontamente cancellato una parte dei peni, castrando l’Albero della fecondità con grande sgomento degli storici e delle donne in attesa là sotto.
Come il mare consuma la costa, la storia viene costantemente erosa, ma non dalle onde del tempo, bensì da uomini che dissotterrano spiagge rimodellando il territorio a loro misura. L’unico luogo nel sud dell’Italia, e presumibilmente nel mondo, dove le tradizioni delle iscrizioni falliche sono rimaste intatte è a Grottaglie, una piccola cittadina a est di Taranto. Nelle strade di Grottaglie l’arte tradizionale è mantenuta in vita e rinnovata di generazione in generazione, i bambini in età scolare sono incoraggiati a seguire le orme artistiche dei loro predecessori. Non c’è nessun altro posto nel mondo come a Grottaglie in cui la vivace rinascita del pene non possa essere meglio testimoniata, una cultura che vive, frutti nutriti da lunghe e profonde radici a forma di pene.
