divergent realities. Nine-tenths of a second can change the world.
Leonard Tramer understood this only too well. Nine-tenths of a second haunted him,
possessing every thought. He did not dispute the fact that his momentary lapse in concentration
deserved to be deemed unforgivable. What the aging inventor could not accept was the notion
that his error was irrevocable. For decades, Leonard tinkered and toiled in an effort to rectify the
horrible mistake he had made on May 9th
– thirty-one years, four months, and two days ago. He
intended to pursue his quest for the duration of his life, if necessary.
Hunched over a desk, Leonard cursed under his breath while delicately manipulating a fine-tipped solder iron. The desk, littered with wires and electronic parts, had endured decades of blasphemy, burns, and solder stains. An ancient computer stood in the center, its fan clattering in protest, while a relatively new laptop rested in the corner, as far removed from the chaos as possible.
“Damn.”
Leonard placed the soldering iron on its cradle, pushed his chair away from the desk, and ran one hand through his thinning hair. Mostly gray, with a hint of brown, his short, loose curls scattered as his fingers passed. He had not showered in at least two days, and he could only
imagine the state of his ever-decaying appearance. A two-day-old beard and a smattering of freckles accentuated fifty-one years of well-earned creases. A loose white t-shirt, half tucked into faded jeans, nearly blended with his pallid skin. Still, his medium build and square jaw preserved
an essence of dignity. A shave and a smile would likely transform him, but grooming and pleasantries were not on his agenda that afternoon.
He noticed Michelle out of the corner of his eye and swiveled to face her. She stood in the doorway glaring at him, a small red suitcase at her feet. Her cropped, black hair did little to
soften her long, thin features.
“I’m leaving, Leo.”
With a weary, defeated expression, Leonard stared at the young woman. “Okay. Do you have everything?”
“Okay? Is that all you’re going to say? Okay?”
He shrugged.
“I wasted nearly a year of my life trying to rescue you from this mess.” She gestured around the room. A disorderly array of boxes, disassembled electronic devices, and dog-eared books spoke volumes. A well-worn armchair in one corner betrayed the fact that Leonard rarely left the
room, resting briefly in-between periods of manic productivity that paid the bills, and stretches of creativity that fueled his obsession.
“I didn’t ask for a rescue.”
“You’re wasting away in here, pursuing this MacGyver-meets-Flash-Gordon nonsense. You had so much potential.”
“MacGyver meets the Time Traveler.”
“What?”
“MacGyver meets the Time Traveler from H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine. That would be a better analogy.”
“Whatever.”
“I’m just saying—”
“The boy is dead, Leo. You’re never going to bring him back with this insane delusion. He. Is. Dead.”
Leonard jumped to his feet and swiftly crossed the room, stopping inches from her face. She grimaced and took a step back.
“Tommy Richardson,” he shouted. “He is not the boy. His name is Tommy Richardson. And will save him if it consumes my entire life.”
Michelle folded her arms, tears forming at the edges of her eyes. “It has consumed your life, Leo. Can’t you see that? Can’t you imagine all the things you could have done if you hadn’t embraced this crazy notion that you can change the past?” She pointed at the open door on the far wall. “This ridiculous conviction that you can build a time machine in your closet?”
Leonard looked at his feet. “Leave.”
“Leo, I—”
“Leave,” he said, his voice deep and menacing. When he glanced up, she was gone.
Michelle, Lisa, Brenda, and a series of other women who came and went meant little to Leonard. In fact, they proved to be a distraction. Online dating chat rooms. Late night blind dates bars. Florence Nightingales hell-bent on delivering him from evil. What did these women
want from him, really? He vowed for the sixteenth time since he traded the love of his life for his obsession that he would swear off women.
He returned to his desk and resumed the task at hand.

In der Mitte stand ein uralter Computer, der Lüfter ratterte wie aus Protest, und in der Ecke, so weit wie nur möglich von dem Chaos entfernt, befand sich ein relativ neuer Laptop.

Leonard steckte den Lötkolben zurück in den Halter, schob seinen Stuhl vom Schreibtisch und fuhr sich mit einer Hand durch das schütter werdende Haar. Seine Haare waren überwiegend grau, nur eine Spur Braun war noch zu erkennen und die kurzen, losen Locken verteilten sich, als er mit den Fingern hindurchfuhr. Er hatte seit mindestens zwei Tagen nicht mehr geduscht und konnte nur ahnen, wie verwahrlost er aussehen musste. Ein Zweitagebart und ein paar einzelne Sommersprossen hoben die in einundfünfzig Jahren hart erarbeiteten Falten nur noch mehr hervor. Das weite, weiße T-Shirt hatte er halb in die verwaschene Jeans gesteckt und es passte nahezu perfekt zu seinem blassen Hautton. Dennoch verlieh ihm sein mittelgroßes, eckiges Kinn ein gewisses Maß an Würde. Eine Rasur und ein Lächeln würden sein Aussehen wahrscheinlich völlig verändern, aber Körperpflege und andere Bequemlichkeiten standen heute Nachmittag nicht auf seiner Tagesordnung.
Aus den Augenwinkeln sah er Michelle und drehte sich zu ihr um. Sie stand mit einem roten Koffer neben ihren Füßen in der Tür und starrte ihn an. Ihre kurzen, schwarzen Haare verliehen dem langen, dürren Gesicht nicht unbedingt weichere Züge.
„Ich gehe, Leo.“
Leonard starrte die junge Frau mit einem müden, resignierten Ausdruck an. „Okay. Hast du alles?“
„Okay? Ist das alles, was du zu sagen hast? Okay?“
Er zuckte mit den Schultern.
„Ich habe fast ein ganzes Jahr meines Lebens damit verschwendet, dich aus diesem Chaos retten zu wollen.“ Sie gestikulierte durchs Zimmer. Die ungeordnete Ansammlung von Kisten, zerlegten Elektrogeräten und mit Eselsohren versehenen Büchern sprachen Bände. Ein abgenutzter Sessel in der Ecke ließ darauf schließen, dass Leonard das Zimmer selten verließ und sich nur zwischen den Phasen manischer Arbeitsanfälle, die wenigstens ab und zu etwas Geld einbrachten, und gelegentlicher Kreativitätsausbrüche, die seine Besessenheit schürten, etwas Schlaf gönnte.
„Ich habe nicht um Rettung gebeten.“
„Du gehst völlig ein bei all diesem MacGyver-trifft-Flash-Gordon-Schwachsinn. Du hattest so viel Potenzial.“
„MacGyver trifft den Zeitreisenden.“
„Was?“
„MacGyver trifft den Zeitreisenden aus Die Zeitmaschine von H.G. Wells. Das wäre eine bessere Analogie.“
„Was auch immer.“
„Ich mein ja nur – ”
„Der Junge ist tot, Leo. Du wirst ihn mit diesem Wahnsinn nie wieder zurückbringen können. Er. Ist. Tot.“
Leonard sprang auf, durchquerte den Raum und blieb nur einige Zentimeter vor ihr stehen. Sie verzog das Gesicht und ging einen Schritt zurück.
„Tommy Richardson!“, schrie er, „Er ist nicht einfach nur der Junge. Sein Name ist Tommy Richardson. Und ich werde ihn retten, auch wenn ich dafür mein ganzes Leben opfern muss.“
Michelle verschränkte die Arme und in ihren Augen waren nun Tränen zu sehen. „Du hast dein Leben schon dafür geopfert, Leo. Siehst du das nicht? Stell dir doch nur mal vor, was du alles hättest erreichen können, wenn du nicht so besessen von dieser verrückten Idee gewesen wärst, dass du die Vergangenheit ändern kannst!“ Sie zeigte auf die offene Tür an der gegenüberliegenden Wand. „Diese lächerliche Idee, dass du eine Zeitmaschine in deinem Schrank bauen kannst?“
Leonard sah auf seine Füße. „Geh jetzt.“
„Leo, ich – ”
„Geh jetzt“, sagte er mit tiefer und bedrohlicher Stimme. Als er aufsah, war sie fort.
Michelle, Lisa, Brenda und eine Reihe anderer Frauen kamen und gingen und bedeuteten Leonard wenig. Eigentlich waren sie nur eine Ablenkung. Chatroom-Bekanntschaften. Blind Dates spät in der Nacht in irgendwelchen Bars. Frauen vom Typ Florence Nightingale, die wild entschlossen schienen, seine Wunden zu heilen. Was wollten diese Frauen eigentlich von ihm? Die Liebe seines Lebens hatte er wegen seiner Besessenheit verloren und gelobte nun mittlerweile zum sechzehnten Mal, dass er Frauen für immer abschwören würde.
Er setzte sich zurück an seinen Schreibtisch und nahm die Arbeit wieder auf.

About me
I have been working as a German freelance translator for the languages English and French for 8 years now and specialised in those areas I personally have a passion for. These include literature/fiction, linguistics, literary studies, media and art, social sciences and the arts, education and educational theory because I am also a tutor. But as a translator I also work in the fields of journalism, marketing and advertising as well as tourism and free time.
Mainly I translate websites, brochures/booklets, presentations and advertising texts. I am most passionate about translating fiction, though. During my studies of "Literary Translation" and my internship at the Translator’s Council in Straelen I learnt the necessary skills for this special subject and in 2012 I translated the novel "Nine-Tenths" by Meira Pentermann. 2013 I then worked on the translation of numerous Marvel comic books as well as some volumes of French romance novels and 2015 the German edition of Arion Golmakani's memoir "Solacers" was published.
