leahkc, Is the text reading "You have been named defendant in a sums complaint (copy attached hereto) filed in..." ? and the second paragraph : "You are hereby summoned and required to answer the complaint..." ?
Eliza Hall Jun 28, 2019:
Which US state? Knowing what state would permit us to look up what that means. Each state sets its own names for legal actions, and while there's a lot of crossover, there are some differences that you genuinely can't understand without looking up that state's laws.

Terme assez général qui permet de couvrir plusieurs possibilités :

- Assignation au fond
Peer comment(s):

disagree Eliza Hall : I'm pretty sure the term is an abbreviation for "Summons and Complaint." When OP confirms that it's from a docket, I'll be sure, but everything I've seen points that way..

disagree Germaine : sans compter que "complaint" = requête + back-translation: debt recovery proceedings

disagree Eliza Hall : That guess makes sense, but I'm pretty sure the English term is an abbreviation for "Summons and Complaint."

disagree Germaine : et de toute façon, ce serait une requête, pas une "plainte".

Assignation et Demande

If this term (sums complaint) comes from a docket (i.e. a list of documents filed in a court case), I strongly suspect it is an abbreviation meaning "Summons and Complaint."

Those two documents are always served together; the Summons tells the defendant that they've been sued, by whom and why, and how long they have to file an answer, while the Complaint sets out in detail why they've been sued.

When I googled the English term, the entire first page of results was nothing but dockets (often dockets attached to legal pleadings to show what papers had been filed in the case at bar or related litigation). If a "sums complaint" were a type of complaint, as others have suggested, the results should have included court opinions discussing such complaints. They didn't. So I am pretty sure this is an abbreviation for summons and complaint.
