Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) refers to blood clots that form in veins. It is a common, dangerous and potentially life threatening condition.
It includes the following:
• Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep inside a part of the body. It mainly affects the large veins in the lower leg, thigh and pelvis.
• Pulmonary Embolism (PE) – A blood clot in the lungs is called a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). When a clot from your leg breaks off and travels up your veins to your lungs, it becomes a PE. A large PE can block blood flow to the lungs and can cause death.
