Discussion

Vicky James (asker) Dec 5, 2012:
Sorry folks, I wasn't necessarily agreeing with Phil's idea (which I took to be just a thought, given that he hasn't posted it as an answer), simply that I've been musing on the same possibilities - select / selection - and looking at their respective definitions. I drew a blank - hence my question! Thanks for all your comments, though, they're much appreciated and still useful in deciding which direction to go in.
B D Finch Dec 5, 2012:
@Phil Check out the ref I posted, where it is quite clear what is involved in selection. Not a "select committee" (comité restreint), where it is the membership of the committee that is select, in the sense of "a select few".
Yvonne Gallagher Dec 5, 2012:
@ Phil, post "select committee" and you have my agree!
Vicky James (asker) Dec 5, 2012:
My musings exactly. Thanks Phil.
philgoddard Dec 5, 2012:
"Selection committee" is the obvious thing that springs to mind, but I can't see any evidence from the limited number of Google hits that their job is to select things. I wonder if it's the equivalent of "select committee", meaning a small group of specialists.

Selected

selection committee/group/working party

What is being selected seems to be the people or goods to be subjected to searches at customs posts. The source term seems to get exclusively African Google hits, which indicates that it is not mainstream French.

I don't know that a group of people doing the selecting described in my reference would be called anything that included the word "select" in English. It appears really to be about setting guidelines or criteria that customs officers can use to decide which persons or goods to select for checks, rather than checking everyone and everything that crosses the border in question.

Perhaps it is best to look at the above reference in conjunction with this one:

" Le Gouvernement de la République Togolaise a obtenu de l’Association Internationale de Développement (IDA), un don (H-5490-TG) pour le financement du Projet de Facilitation du Commerce et du Transport sur le Corridor Abidjan-Lagos (PFCTCAL), et a l’intention d’utiliser une partie du montant de ce don pour effectuer les paiements au titre des prestations des services de consultant relatives au présent avis à manifestation d’intérêt.

2. Les Services attendus du cabinet consisteront entre autres à:

outiller le comité de sélectivité pour une analyse efficace des risques;
mettre à la disposition des membres du comité des moyens nécessaires leur permettant de concevoir des critères pertinents de sélectivité pour le traitement des déclarations, y compris un rapport sur l’évaluation des indicateurs et tables de sélectivité dans le SYDONIA et les moyens d’obtenir des données pour leur maintenance;
apprendre aux membres du comité à ajuster les tables et les indicateurs de risques ainsi que leur priorité en SYDONIA;
rédiger un manuel de procédure interne;
appuyer la structure de gestion et d’analyse de risque en matière de réforme du cycle de gestion des risques et des rapports, d’étude de résultats, de la gestion du changement et de la provision de la formation sur l’analyse du risque et la sélectivité."

neutral philgoddard : Perhaps I'm not looking properly, but I can't see the committee itself mentioned in your reference. And if it does indeed mean ' deciding who to search", surely it should be "selectivity" as the English translation says in your reference?

It isn't, see note just added. The subject matter is the same and all refs for this phrase seem to lead back to change in W. African customs policies.
agree Daryo : fully agree that's about defining criteria for targeted searches; not sure about the best name for this committee.

Thanks Daryo. It probably should stay fairly close to the French, in order to avoid confusion, unless it is an idea they want taken up by anglophone, neighbouring countries.

agree Jean-Claude Gouin : 100% d'accord. Aussi, je n'ai jamais vu/entendu 'comité de sélectivité' ... // Mes oreilles francophones aimeraient mieux entendre 'comité de sélection' ... For me, a 'select committee' is NOT the same as a 'selection committee' ...

yes, IMO, if there was the idea of what is called in English a select committee, I think it would be "comité sélectif" in French.// on est d'accord

Selection Criteria Committee

POUR L’ASSISTANCE TECHNIQUE ... AU COMITE DE SELECTIVITE -- DES DOUANES TOGOLAISES -- POUR L’ANALYSE DES RISQUES EN MATIERE DOUANIERE

This committee is there for defining criteria - for targeted searches by customs.

"sélectivité (n.f.)
1.fait d'être sélectif; propriété de ce qui peut procéder à une sélection.
2.(technique) capacité d'un récepteur à distinguer une fréquence des fréquences voisines."

By analogy with
"In August 2008, David F. Fisher, Chairman of the RCAC, named a committee to review and update the selection criteria for candidates for the Board of Regents. The Selection Criteria Committee met on August 28, 2008 and later reported on its work tothe full RCAC. On December 11, 2008, the RCAC voted unanimously to adopt the Selection Criteria Report.
