Discussion

Tony M Nov 6, 2011:
OK, getting a clearer picture now! This is clearly pretty poorly written, I suspect by someone who is not a native EN speaker (well, unless educational standards really have plummeted that far since I worked in education in the UK!)

I would guess that the intended meaning was simply "(getting them) to place their trust in you".
Sylvie Chartier (asker) Nov 6, 2011:
A couple of more sentences before the fatal one... Talk directly to as many of them as possible in a generous way –this creates trust in the benefit of listening.

Do not talk at them -this is aggressive and likely to make them look for the exits.

Audience control comes of them trusting themselves to you.

This is all I can add otherwise I would have to write the whole document.

Thank you all for you help.
Tony M Nov 6, 2011:
EN-GB? Well, being myself GB, I was kind of hoping this was perhaps just odd US English ;-) Oh dear, sounds more like mid-Atlantic illiteracy :-(
Sylvie Chartier (asker) Nov 6, 2011:
Very odd EN As a matter of fact, the whole document is weirdly written and by checking the customer's Website I see that he's British. I am not sure if it has anything to do with that fact but I will verify with him if I don't find a satisfactory answer.
Tony M Nov 6, 2011:
Odd EN? Is it just me, or is this EN slightly odd? I'd have expected either "them trusting you" (as translated by Antoine) or else "them entrusting themselves to you", which sounds slightly weird, as if they are in some way 'placing their life in their hands'; the presence of that "themselves" may be crucial in correctly conveying the intended meaning — which you probably ought to check with the customer!

neutral Tony M : That would translate "them trusting you" — the odd-sounding addition of "themselves to" makes me wonder what the real intended meaning might have been here?

yop Tony, it could be another meaning, more like "control due to the fact they trust themselves because of you" or something like this. Sentence is a bit obscure. More context would be great indeed.
