Ich kenne die Formulierung mit 'by' im Sinne von 'bereits zu diesem Zeitpunkt', hier also noch vor Beginn der zweiten Hälfte der Saison. Ich persönlich finde die Formulierung mit 'zur' auch besser. Die 'Wettkampfsaison' halte ich hier für angebrachter als 'Spielsaison', weil es um die Nordische Kombination geht, in der keine Spiele (wie beim Basketball, Tennis usw.) ausgetragen werden, sondern nur Wettkämpfe.

: Wettkampfsaison finde ich gut; "in" der Hälfte halte ich nicht für besonders deutsch, eher "nach" od. wenn in, dann in der Mitte, wobei das natürlich nicht mehr zum Kontext passt.
