Depends on how you define a quiet spell Jan 31, 2011

I've had the odd quiet day or two in the last few months, but I don't think I've had a quiet week in the last year!

depends on definition Jan 31, 2011

My definitition would be a day when I have absolutely no work to do; and that is indeed many many moons ago!

Right now Jan 31, 2011

After a very intensive period, I went through the desert for 2 weeks, not one single line in the second half of January - the previous empty spell was 15 years ago and lasted only one week.

... which was probably when I posted the idea for this poll. I was unaccountably quiet last April/May after a very busy year prior to that and it's been hectic ever since. You just never can tell... After 20+ years as a freelance, you'd think I'd have learnt by now not to panic and enjoy the rest days when they come, but that professional insecurity just never goes away. Time limits Jan 31, 2011

It depends on how long you consider it should last before it's declared so.

Sometimes, just a couple of hours, maybe up to a couple of days. Otherwise I'd never have managed to build a considerable part of my web site, wouldn't have time to proactively approach new clients, nor learn to use new software.

My understanding of spell Jan 31, 2011

By spell, I suppose I had in mind at least a couple of days. A few hours barely gives you time to draw breath, put the kettle on and take the dog for a walk! Of course, it can extend as long as you like (or don't like ...).

After the summer holidays Jan 31, 2011

I've taken the last dry spell to be when I was last actively looking/waiting for work and it took a few days... This was when I got back from my extended holiday (ie. honeymoon!) last summer, contacted my clients and had a quiet enough 1st week back while waiting for a real flow of work.

long ago Jan 31, 2011

when my wife and I went on our honemoon to Bali two weeks long, but since then, have never had a period where I could say that it was quite and relaxing the whole time.

Last April Jan 31, 2011

The work volume was down to about a third of the normal. Have no idea why.

Last November Jan 31, 2011

I've been working full-time for over nine years, rarely having more than the odd quiet day here and there. All of a sudden, last November, work just dried up and I barely made enough to cover childcare costs. I got quite worried and couldn't understand why it was happening. I should have just enjoyed the free time, because things have been really busy since then!

After vacations Jan 31, 2011

I took time off twice last year, and each time it took me a week or so before the work started coming in.

Well, with 30.9% so far saying they're in one now, I'm slightly heartened. After working straight up til midnight on Christmas Eve, I've had a very slow January. I'm trying to use my time constructively, but I must say it's still nerve-wracking. Usually this only happens in August.
