What are your thoughts on malpractice insurance for translators? How much do you at, and which features (deductible, etc.) are, in your opinion, essential? Thank you 😊

You'll get more hits if you search for "professional liability insurance" (PLI). It is important to know that general liability insurance does not cover professional liability. PLI tends to be very expensive, particularly for industries where it is very difficult to prove who is right and who is wrong, such as our industry, or industries where work isn't done according to strict protocols but according to the gut instinct of the practitioner, such as our industry. Some PLIs become void if you sign a contract that accepts unlimited liability (search for "harmless" and "indemnify" in your contracts). In addition, PLI insurers often pay out only a portion of the insurance claim, while creating the impression that they have negotiated a lower settlement, when in fact the lower settlement applies to themselves only, and you still need to pay the rest. Finally, a PLI may not pay out until the very end of the process, by which time you would have bankrupted yourself anyway. I suspect legal assistance insurance may be a better bargain for translators who are unsure of their risks.
