El latido regular del corazón se origina en el corazón mismo. El nodo Sinoatrial (SA) (seno sinusal) es el marcapasos natural del corazón. El nodo SA está ubicado en la pared de la aurícula derecha cerca de la unión de la aurícula y la vena cava superior. El nodo SA consiste en células cardiacas especializadas que emiten impulsos regulares y su descarga eléctrica espontánea establece la frecuencia y ritmo al cual las células del músculo cardiaco se contraen.
El nodo atrioventricular (AV), también ubicado en la pared de la aurícula derecha, aunque cerca de la válvula tricúspide y del nadir de la cúspide no coronaria de la válvula aórtica, es la segunda etapa de este ´sistema de conducción eléctrica intrínseco´. El corazón del adulto humano normalmente late entre 60 y 74 veces por minuto. En infantes y niños pequeños puede variar entre 100 y 120 latidos por minuto. El SNA domina todos los tejidos del cuerpo.
El nervio vago envía desde la división parasimpática cerebral fibras a la superficie del corazón y a las áreas nodales. Las fibras preganglionares largas mielinizadas del tronco cerebral abandonan los nervios y las ramas laríngeas recurrentes y pasan a través del plexo cardiaco hasta alcanzar el corazón; se produce una sinapsis con las fibras posganglionares no mielinizadas minúsculas del miocardio. Las neuronas parasimpáticas producen acetilcolina como neurotransmisor; son, por ende, neuronas colinérgicas. La actividad vagal colinérgica disminuye la frecuencia cardiaca y reduce el volumen sistólico.

Las neuronas simpáticas producen norepinefrina (adrenalina); son, por ende, neuronas adrenérgicas. La actividad simpática adrenérgica acelera la frecuencia cardiaca e incrementa el volumen sistólico.
En el desarrollo embriológico, tanto las neuronas simpáticas y parasimpáticas, se originan a partir de las Células de la Cresta Neural, situadas en la región dorsal del tubo neural. Las corrientes migratorias de la cresta neural también originan el endotelio de la aorta, el arco aórtico y las arterias; y la evolución de las crestas para la separación definitiva de la aorta ascendente y la arteria pulmonar dentro del tronco arterioso.
Sorprendentemente aún no conocemos algunas de las peculiaridades de esta migración fantástica y misteriosa, cómo se inicia, quién es el agente migratorio que guía la ruta sobre la cual desplazarse, qué señales indican que se ha llegado a destino y que la migración debería finalizar, etc. No obstante, a través de la tenacidad de experimentos científicos en curso, comenzaremos a descubrir todos los detalles
relacionados con uno de los aspectos más fascinantes del conocimiento humano.
Ahora bien, ¿puede el SNA establecer un sistema de bombeo permanente para todo el período de la vida? En realidad, el SNA no es ni suficiente ni seguro. La acción del SNA es demasiado aislada; podría estar totalmente agotado y producirse una catástrofe a lo largo del día y, particularmente, de la noche; durante el sueño su función es demasiado irregular. El comportamiento humano tiene tendencias cambiantes y extremadamente variables, especialmente en circunstancias dramáticas. En verdad, todo el proceso de circulación de la sangre -la garantía total y segura de vida-requiere una función constante y uniforme.
De hecho, los sistemas simpático y parasimpático no son suficientes, aún cuando se comportan de manera constante en una suerte de equilibrio preciso y fascinante.
Sentimos instintivamente que un sistema adicional debe estar funcionando para asegurar el misterio de la vida. Este sistema notablemente seguro consiste en un sistema intrínseco que hemos descripto al comienzo de este artículo. En realidad, se ha desarrollado a partir de sus propias células miocárdicas; en consecuencia, parece probable que el corazón mismo—hace millones de años— haya hecho que el diseño inteligente asegurara su función rítmica y constante.
Insistimos, este sistema notablemente seguro consiste en los siguientes elementos:

Encontramos que en aquellos que están en una situación de lucha o bajo esfuerzo físico violento –atemorizados- el SNA funciona acelerando el corazón mediante secreción de adrenalina. Es el medio de defensa más antiguo de los mamíferos, siendo, a su vez, el más cruel para el atacante.
En verdad, el sistema más seguro del corazón para alcanzar una función rítmica durante el curso de una vida es el propio sistema cardiaco
intrínseco. Es una verdadera marca de unión, el milagroso diseño inteligente del corazón.
Es fascinante observar la evolución de este sistema intrínseco a través de millones de años.
En las ranas, cada contracción del corazón comienza con una carga negativa localizada que se expande sobre la superficie del seno venoso; una cámara agrandada entre la vena cava y el atrio. Entonces, en el corazón de la rana, el marcapasos es el seno venoso. En los teleósteos, con su seno venoso vestigial, el principal centro de coordinación parece ser la aurícula derecha.

The miraculous ability to preserve life
The regular beating of the heart originates in the heart itself. The Sinoatrial (SA) node is the heart’s natural pacemaker. The SA node is located in the wall of the right atrium near the junction of the atrium and the superior vena cava. The SA node consists of specialized heart cells that emit regular impulses and its electrical spontaneous discharge sets the rate and timing at which all cardiac muscle cells contract.
The Atrioventricular (AV) node, also located in the wall of the right atrium but near the tricuspid valve and of the nadir of the non-coronary cusp of the aortic valve, is the second stage of this ‘intrinsic electrical conducting system’. From the AV node the electrical impulses run through specialized muscle fibers called Purkinje fibers, which then conduct the signals to the apex of the heart along and throughout the ventricular walls.
This intrinsic conducting system has evolved through millions of years as a truly Intelligent Evolution.
The human adult heart normally beats between 60 and 74 times a minute. In infants and young children it may be between 100 and 120 beats a minute. Tension, exertion or fever may cause the rate of the heart to vary between 55 and 200 beats a minute. The heart rate is directly related to the metabolic rate of the body and metabolism is higher in children and in feverish patients.
In large adult mammals, such as elephants and horses, the heart beats twenty-five to forty times per minute, whereas in rats and mice the rate may be three hundred to five hundred beats per minute. The sinus pacing of a hummingbird in flight is greater than one thousand beats per minute. In fact, their body temperature and high metabolic functions regulate the heart rate.
Now, besides the inherent heart system previously described, also the cardiac contractility is under the direct action of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), formed by both the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic divisions controlled by the Central Nervous System. The ANS control all tissues of the body.
The vagus nerve from the brain's parasympathetic division sends fibers over the surface of the heart and to the nodal areas. Long myelinated preganglionic fibers from the brain stem abandon the nerves and recurrent laryngeal branches and pass through the cardiac plexus to reach the heart; synapse occurs with minute unmyelinated postganglionic fibers in the myocardium. Parasympathetic neurons produce acethylcholine as their neurotransmitter; they are therefore cholinergic neurons. Cholinergic vagal activity slows the heart rate and reduces the stroke volume.
The fibers of the sympathetic division from the chest sympathetic chains course also through the cardiac plexus and terminate in the vicinity of the sinus-atrial and atrial-ventricular nodes. The sympathetic neurons produce norepinephrine (adrenalin); they are therefore adrenergic neurons. Adrenergic sympathetic activity accelerates the heart rate and increases the stroke volume.
In the embryological development both the parasympathetic and sympathetic neurons originate from the Neural Crest Cells situated at the dorsal-most region of the neural tube. Approximately during the fifth week of gestation there starts an extensive neural crest cell migration to generate a prodigious number of differentiated cell types.
Apart from the neurons and glial cells of the ANS mentioned, the neural crest cells originate sensorial cells, the medulla of adrenal glands (producing epinephrine), the pigment containing cells of the epidermis and many of the skeletal and connective tissue components of the head and the face. The face —the similarity with the parents— is largely the product of the cranial neural crest of the neural tube of the brain’s primitive stages, and the evolution of the jaws, teeth, and facial cartilages occurs through the changes of these migrating neural crest streams.
The heart’s development also gets a critical influx of cells from the neural crest. These crest cells contribute to the formation of endocardial cushions which, in turn, are critical in converting simple one-chamber pump into a complex two-chambered heart with sophisticated valves. The migrating streams of neural crest also originate the endothelium of the aorta, the aortic arch and arteries; and the evolution of ridges for the definitive separation of the ascending aorta and the pulmonary artery inside the truncus arteriosus.
Remarkably, we still do not know some of the peculiarities of this fantastic and mysterious migration, how it is initiated, who is the migratory agent to direct the route on which to travel, what signals indicate that the destination has been reached and that migration should end, etc., however, through the tenacity of elegant scientific experiments in progress, we will start discovering all the details concerning one of the most exciting aspects of human knowledge.
Now, can the ANS establish a permanent pumping system for the total life span? Indeed, the ANS is neither sufficient nor secure. The action of the ANS is too scattered; it could be wholly exhausted and a catastrophe could happen throughout the day, and particularly at night; during sleep its function is too irregular. Human behaviour has changeable and extremely variable tendencies, especially in dramatic circumstances. Indeed, the whole process of blood circulation—the wholly and assuredly guarantee of life— requires a constant and uniform function.
In fact, the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems are not enough, even when they behave constantly in a sort of fascinating and precise balance.
We feel instinctively that an additional system must be operating to secure the mystery of life. This remarkably secure system consists of an intrinsic system that we have described at the beginning of this article. Really, it has been evolved from their own myocardial cells—accordingly, it seems likely that the heart itself—millions of years ago— made the intelligent design secure its constant and rhythmical function.
We insist in the fact that this remarkably secure system consists of the following elements:
a) The SA node placed in the right atrium provides automaticity to the system;
b) The atrial-ventricular node;
c) The bundle of His, and the Purkinje fibers.
This intrinsic system defines the cardiac cycle, the heart’s electrical activity that is registered with the electrocardiogram. The cardiac cycle lasts about 0.8 second.
The atrial systole (contraction) begins the cardiac cycle, lasts 0.1 second and produces pressures of about 5 mm Hg in the right atrium and 12 mmHg in the left atrium; the atrial diastole (relaxation) is approximately 0.7 second long.
Ventricular systole (contraction) follows atrial systole and has a duration of 0.3 second; it produces a pressure of approximately 25 mm Hg in the right ventricle and 120 mmHg in the left ventricle. Ventricular diastole occupies slightly more than one half of the cardiac cycle.
Incredibly, this beneficial, powerful caring for life system has been developed in the proper myocardium. Specialized cardiac muscles cells in a certain region of the myocardium have been changed to reach sensitivity and autorhythmicity.
However, when facing a dramatic situation the central nervous system —the brain—, ‘the greatest common and final arbiter for life’, takes command.
In severe cardiac failure, impulses originating in the brain activate the ANS. We can clinically detect this activation, in the peripheral milieu of heart failure —the brain’s activation of endocrine glands and sympathetic and parasympathetic reflexes. They are the neuro-humoral expression markers and inflammatory markers of severe heart failure.
Moreover, our brooding human existence requires that the heart must occasionally act with increasingly extreme strength and violence. We find that in those who are quarrelling or under violent physical exertion—running in fear—the ANS acts by accelerating the heart via adrenaline secretion. It is the mammal’s oldest means of defense and, in turn, the cruelest for the attacker.
Indeed, the heart’s most secure system for a rhythmic function during a life span is the heart’s own intrinsic system. It is a true mark of togetherness, the miraculous heart’s Intelligent design.
It is fascinating to review the evolution of the heart’s intrinsic system through millions of years. In the frog, each contraction of the heart begins with a localized negative charge that spreads over the surface of the sinus venosus; an enlarged chamber between the vena cava and the atrium.Then in the frog heart, the pacemaker is the sinus venosus. In teleosts with their vestigial sinus venosus, the main center of coordination seems to be the right atrium.
In fact, in more primitive vertebrates the muscles of the heart are relatively continuous and the sinus venosus coordinates the beat which passes in an interrupted wave through the remaining chambers.
Since the sinus venosus is incorporated into the right atrium in amniotes, it is likely homologous with the SA node.
Then, in birds and in mammals special conducting fibers (arising from modified muscle cells) transmit the wave of excitation; and this is the successful practical system to work incessantly for a human life span.

Source text - English These astounding figures come directly from Yanacocha’s own Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which, as shocking a read as it is, is widely criticized by academics, lawyers, civil society, and the local communities for not telling the whole story. World renowned hydrogeologist expert Robert Moran describes how the EIA fails to examine the complex subterranean water system which connects the mountain lakes to the wetlands and rivers.(5) Due to the severe lack of essential information needed to understand the real effect of the extraction activities, Moran calls it “basically a public relations document, intended to promote the acquisition of permits.” Another report heavily criticizing the EIA came from the government itself – lead by Jorge de Chave, then Vice Minister of Environmental Management, who soon resigned after the government refused to release it.
Despite these deficiencies and criticisms the EIA was approved. This not surprising however considering who passed it; unlike other countries where the Ministry of Environment is responsible for approving EIAs, in Peru it is the Ministry of Energy and Mining who approves its own projects, a fact considered by some to be unconstitutional.(6) Furthermore, the engineer who was responsible for the writing of the EIA, Felipe Ramirez del Pino, while working for Yanaococha, then entered the Ministry of Energy and Mines to approve his own work. This is typical of the revolving door between mining companies and the government in Peru.
Additionally, the presentation of the EIA, the only change for the affected communities to have their say, served no such function. The ‘audience’ took place in La Encañada, in the province of Cajamarca, despite the fact that 80 percent of the effects of Minas Conga would be felt in the province of Celendin. The vast majority of Celendin citizens, including those living nearest to the proposed Conga site, were not even informed about the existence of the EIA, never mind an event to present its contents. Yanacocha claims that 31 out of 32 affected communities were consulted; campaigners claim the actual number of communities affected would be 200 – and most of them were not consulted.
