Historia nativo americana
"Crazy Horse had ascended to the ranks of his ancestors two years past, having massacred General George Armstrong Custer and two hundred fifty-six of his pony soldiers at the Little Big Horn"

Note from asker:
Oh, sorry, Molly, I just saw your reference comment, and its very helpful, thank you. |

soldados de la caballeria US/caballeria ligera
I see nothing much different

Note from asker:

Note from asker:
Gracias, Carla. |

Indian ponies
"Although the settlers called most horses raised by the American Indians "cayuse ponies", the Cayuse Indian Pony of the Northwest is a distinct breed which originated in the 1800's. Its conformation and its background set it apart from the mustang, Spanish Barb or other wild horses."
Indian horse breeds: "Class P ("Pony") registration is for ponies that have the proper type characteristics. They might have pedigreed breeding such as the Galiceno or Pony of the Americas, or could be of unknown ancestry."

: Thanks a lot. I was wondering yesterday why the word "pony" is used in this expression and not simply "horse".

I knew about the ponies from too many Western novels, movies, and TV shows, but understood better from other sources. :)
