The pulsating discharge flow is further smoothed by arranging air receivers that act as short-time accumulators (pressure vessel) in the suction and discharge pipes, or by having several cylinders in parallel operated by the same crankshaft (duplex pump, triplex pump). The cylinders may be arranged horizontally or vertically, and the crankshaft is usually horizontal. Piston and plunger pumps are either provided with a very simple bypass adjustment, which returns a greater or lesser portion of the flow from the discharge to the suction as required (the losses are quite acceptable on the smaller units), or with a more ecological but complicated and expensive speed adjustment in the form of a stepless electric motor control, but is an acceptable compromise in the form of a pole changing motor combined with ***by-pass adjustment***. The number of strokes of steam-driven piston pumps, on the other hand, is easily and economically controllable.
