recoupements entre certains dénivelés

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering geometric modelling
Describing techniques used to study a pyramid:

Le modèle 3D a notamment permis à [nom de l'architecte-chercheur] d’acquérir une meilleure connaissance du monument et d’établir des rapprochements entre certaines mesures (on peut en effet obtenir instantanément la distance entre deux points du modèle). Effectuer des **recoupements entre certains dénivelés** et la longueur de divers ouvrages internes de la pyramide fournit des pistes ou des confirmations à l’architecte dans l’élaboration de sa théorie.

Many thanks in advance for any ideas!

Vicky James (asker) Feb 3, 2011:
Thanks, everyone, for all your ideas on this so far. They're very helpful.
Evans (X) Feb 3, 2011:
No reference box available below But to confirm my understanding of this I have checked with a couple of dictionaries (Harraps Unabridged and Collins) and faire un recoupement, faire des recoupements is to cross-check, par recoupement is by cross-checking. Hope that helps.

(establish) the relationship between certain levels

that's my take for what its worth!

cross-checking between different heights

I think recoupement means cross-checking here, carry out cross-checks between the different heights or levels.
Peer comment(s):

agree Conor McAuley : Literally correct, and makes sense, but I claim no expertise in the area...perhaps calculations, simply?

calculations of differences between certain heights

I claim no special expertise in the area, but this is how I understand it.

The term "dénivelé" is used in hiking and in the Tour of France cyclcing race to express the amount of terrain covered going uphill.

The amount: in km.
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : I don't know about the Tour de France usage, but in my walking group the "dénivelé" noted for each walk is the altitude gain over the total distance, not the amount of terrain covered. The descent is ignored as, for walkers, the two don't cancel out.

Ok, I thought the same or a similar principle applied

correlations between particular heights

I know that "correlation" is not the dictionary definition of "recoupement"; however, cross-checking involves correlating information and it makes sense to me in this context.

"Effectuer des **recoupements entre certains dénivelés** et la longueur de divers ouvrages internes de la pyramide"

Performing correlations between particular heights and the length of various internal structures of the pyramid?
