Strange question, but OK Oct 18, 2021

In my laptop I have 4 USB-A ports, but I usually only use 1 at any given time.

More than it has Oct 18, 2021

With notebooks featuring only 3 ports, one's more than likely to need a USB hub

Three is a crowd Oct 18, 2021

So if it's three, which option should I take? Please, give some thought to these poll options...

On my laptop, one for my wireless mouse dongle, one for my 256 GB thumb drive for backups and one for whenever I need to connect my phone (which doubles as an e-reader) or some other device.

Likewise for those who use five.

I suspect the original ranges may have been 1-4 and 5-8, but somebody decided to mess with them.

And... why have ranges at all? Just add the options 0 to 9 and then 10 or more. Oh, wait, ProZ.com is now optimized for mobile users... people with very short screens.

Depends Oct 18, 2021

On my main PC, the keyboard and mouse are permenently connected by USBs to the rear of the tower. There are 3 USBs on the front, although I rarely use more than on of them, at a time. So, 5 on the PC.
On my laptop, there are only 3, which all get used at one time or another.

Let's see... Oct 18, 2021

My computer (which is a budget computer, by the way) has 12 USB ports: 4 x USB-A 2.0, 6 x USB-A 3.0, 1 x USB-A 3.2 and 1 x USB-C. Plugged into them are two external drives, a wireless keyboard, a wired mouse, webcam (unplugged when not in use), and headphones. All of them plus an external powered USB hub with 10 sockets. I need USB ports! Recently, stupid Apple has been trying to eliminate USB altogether, which is one reason why I'm still using a rather old Mac Mini.

Maybe 5 Oct 18, 2021

I have a large desktop computer with a hub. Currently I have a backup drive plugged into the computer and 4 things plugged into the hub, which I also use to charge my phone and other devices (though I'm usually only charging one device at a time).

Like you, Jean, I dithered over this. I ended up voting 3-5 because I use three, but would use more if I had any. Right now I have my mouse, printer and headphones plugged in. My previous laptop had at least five. I don't remember exactly, but I know I had five different things plugged in at one point: mouse, printer phone, headphones and a bike light. I probably didn't have a sixth, or I'd have charged both bike lights at the same time.

5-8 (desktop) Oct 18, 2021

I guess people who voted 1-3 work with notebooks/laptop.
When you work in a desktop, like me, you have mouse, keyboard, speakers, camera, etc. all connected to USB ports. In a laptop, you need none of these.

A: Wired, because I'm sensitive to latency and I hate it.
