balai de mise à la terre

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Generators

Discussion

chris collister May 21, 2014:
The shafts of all kinds of electrical machines are grounded to avoid stray currents passing through the bearings where they cause highly damaging corrosion which causes pits in both balls and ball race. Naturally, you can't connect a braid to a rotating shaft, hence the use of a brush. Despite the name, these are often made of graphite, and not at all "brush-like", though you could argue that they "brush" against the surface.

Grounding/Earthing brush

It's a thingy that looks like a brush! It has numerous wire strands and contacts the moving shaft and electrically connects it to ground(US)/earth(UK).
