French term

oeuvres typées

Selected

a number of contemporary art distinctive pieces

Peer comment(s):

agree David Vaughn : "Normal" phrase order would be "distinctive contemporary art pieces", which is perhaps not strong enough - but not bad. (The suggested order seems awkward and does not convey a clear enough meaning to justify its use.)

you are perfectly right, I vote for your solution

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm still not sure if the text did indeed refer to "local" but the use of "distinctive" seemed to be the best solution. Thank you all for your input."

thank you pandore!
disagree David Vaughn : I wouldn't use a controversial word like "ethnic" when 1) there seems t be no support in the text 2) even if "ethnic" art was being referred to, the author has then "avoided" labelling it in such a way.

how would you define typé then?
agree Roni Osbern : I believe this is right on, typée best refers to ethnic

thanks Roni!
neutral Dylan Edwards : I have doubts about "ethnic", but it made me think: does typées mean "highly individual" (to each artist) or does it mean "with a strong local flavour/stamp" - a characteristically Quebec slant on modern art?

typé definitely means local flavor, as you put it, in French.

their own distinctive style

another possibility
Peer comment(s):

agree David Vaughn : The original is written rather "approximately" - notice the use of "plusieurs". No way of knowing if the author means the works are "typical" contemporary art, or if they are in "distinctive" - but undefined - styles. This response seems "neutral", donc

French term (edited): oeuvres types

works steeped in local tradition

I think this gets the meaning. Maybe also something like "works imbued with local cultural influences".
Peer comment(s):

disagree David Vaughn : The text mentions the local art school & modern art - it mentions nothing about local. It's not impossible that the author wanted to say this by his/her use of "typé" - but it isn't strongly supported by the text.

Yes, I see your point.

original

"type" means,in this sense different from the usual, that stands out.
Original in English also (like the French des oeuvres originales) means creative,new.
