Comment: "I'm still not sure if the text did indeed refer to "local" but the use of "distinctive" seemed to be the best solution. Thank you all for your input."

: I wouldn't use a controversial word like "ethnic" when 1) there seems t be no support in the text 2) even if "ethnic" art was being referred to, the author has then "avoided" labelling it in such a way.

how would you define typé then?

: I have doubts about "ethnic", but it made me think: does typées mean "highly individual" (to each artist) or does it mean "with a strong local flavour/stamp" - a characteristically Quebec slant on modern art?

typé definitely means local flavor, as you put it, in French.

: The original is written rather "approximately" - notice the use of "plusieurs". No way of knowing if the author means the works are "typical" contemporary art, or if they are in "distinctive" - but undefined - styles. This response seems "neutral", donc

I think this gets the meaning. Maybe also something like "works imbued with local cultural influences".

: The text mentions the local art school & modern art - it mentions nothing about local. It's not impossible that the author wanted to say this by his/her use of "typé" - but it isn't strongly supported by the text.

original
"type" means,in this sense different from the usual, that stands out.
Original in English also (like the French des oeuvres originales) means creative, new.
