Dear colleagues, I’m not completely sure about the meaning of “appraised by” in the sentence:
“Beneath the words, the intuitive clinician’s countertransferential responses to these communications of intense, negatively-valenced affects are appraised by the therapist’s observations of his own visceral reactions to the patient’s material.”
This sentence is taken from the passage below about transference-countertransference dynamics.

The reactivation of early right-lateralized negatively valenced autobiographical memories is communicated in bidirectional, nonverbal, nonconscious, right brain/mind/body affectively stressful transactions between the patient and therapist. Transferential body-based limbic-autonomic communications are expressed in nonverbal, visual, auditory, and gestural affective cues that are spontaneously generated from the face, voice, and body of the patient. My hypothesis about the meaning of “appraised by” is the following: “taking a decision (about countertransferential responses) based on (therapist’s observations of his own visceral reactions)”.
So a rephrasing might be: In “deciding” about his countertransferential responses, the intuitive clinician relies upon the observation of his own visceral reactions to the patient’s material”. I’m not completely sure, though...
