It features both an FXS (analog telephone) port and an FXO (PSTN) port so you can have backup lifeline support using a PSTN line in the case of a power outage.

It is an analog telephone adapter featuring 1 analog telephone FXS port and 1 PSTN line FXO port.
The integration of a FXO and FXS port enables remote call origination and termination to and from the PSTN line, known as "hop-on and hop-off" calling.

In telecommunications, hop on refers to a point at which a signal or call enters a network from another network. For example, a call passing through a private branch exchange (PBX) can hop on to a major network such as AT&T. Conversely, a call coming from a large network can hop on to a local PBX or a local cellular network.
Hop off refers to a point at which a signal or call leaves a network and moves to another network. For example, a call made on a cell phone set can hop off the local cellular telephone network to a major network such as AT&T
