The origin of the word "maîtrise" is in the meaning of control and responsibility. Just like a "maître" of a restaurant.

@ Asker Well, going back to the root of the term, let's remember that 'maîtrise' has the underlying meaning of 'mastery' or more like 'control over' — I think that nuance it probably important here, since clearly the role of these 'ateliers' is a lot more than purely supervisory...

@ Asker Sounds weird to me, Paul: the assembly is actually taking place within this 'consortium' of workshops — so I don't really see where the 'supervisory' idea comes in?

Supervisory umbrella I am considering this: Since 2002, the assembly operations have been brought together under a supervisory umbrella made up of watchmaking workshops. But not totally sure...

I think it *could* mean project management. It's possible that one company manages the brand, but outsources the watchmaking to a subsidiary that possibly uses independent watchmakers. Some of the big brands, like Dior and LVMH, have separate companies with Ateliers Horlogers in their names.
