Discussion

Johannes Gleim Mar 5, 2013:
No doubt about RD The cable is buried under a street called "Route Départementale 118", but this was not the question. The cable consists of aluminium conductors with cross-sections of 200 mm².
Pamela Hewitt (asker) Mar 5, 2013:
I can confirm that RD is the route départementale
philgoddard Mar 4, 2013:
Yes, sorry, RD is obvious now. The word order in the first sentence is wrong. And you're probably right about the cable diameter.
Miranda Joubioux (X) Mar 4, 2013:
What Chris says seems quite likely, although I'm surprised that 'de section 2402 Alu did'nt come after HTA. See http://pdf.directindustry.fr/pdf/te-energy/accessoires-de-ca...
chris collister Mar 4, 2013:
RD is probably "route départementale", while 240^2 may be sloppy terminology for 240 sq. mm cross-section aluminium cable, ie 17mm diameter.
philgoddard Mar 4, 2013:
What does RD stand for?

What is the current carrying capacity of 240 Sq mm?
Answer:
A 240 sq. mm. cable has a diameter of
d=square root of 4A/3.14
d= 2(square root of A/3.14)
= 2(square root of 240/3.14
=17.48 mm.

Therefore your cable has a capacity of only 515 amperes in free air. If installed in a duct with three conductors your conductor will have an ampacity of only 350 ampers.
Alternative Answer

The answer is not straightforward, because it depends upon various factors such as the material from which the conductor is manufactured (copper or aluminium), the type of insulation employed, and the configuration of the cable (how many conductors), installation method, etc.

Note: I know these cables with such sections from my previous experience (I was educated electrician and studied electrical engineering).
